Tesla Shines in BEV takeover

The Austrian plug-in sales are up 34% this year, to some 6.000 new Plug-ins, placing the PEV Share to record heights (3,4%).

In what was already a BEV-friendly market, with all-electric cars usually representing 60-70% of plugin sales, we are now witnessing a true BEV takeover, with fully electric vehicles representing 82% of this year sales (87% in June).

When governments play the incentives cards right, good things like these (Large BEV share and growth) happen.

On the other hand, PHEV sales are falling fast, with registrations down 12% this year (-34% in June), could this be the first relevant market to effectively make plugin hybrids redundant?

Tesla plays a major part in this surge, with the Tesla Model 3 in a different league regarding the remaining EV competition, having been #16 last month in the overall market, thanks to 346 deliveries in June, which was still a "meh" result for the sports sedan, after the 703 units of March. Still, with 1,454 units and 24% of the PEV market, no one is complaining.

The BMW i3 is in Second Place, while a slipping the Renault Zoe closes the podium.

With the other two Tesla nameplates also had a chance to shine in June, with the Model S delivering 80 units and the Model X, 43 units, which were their best results in over 2 years (we have to back to March '17, with the Model S scoring 110 units and the Model X, 60), allowing both nameplates to jump positions in the ranking, to #8 in the case of the Model S, and #14 in the case of the Model X.

Another model climbing positions is the Audi e-Tron, up 3 spots to #10, allowing an amazing 100% BEV Top 11 (Not even Norway has something like this), with the Jaguar i-Pace closing the pack, in #11.

The Best Selling PHEV is the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, in #12, so it seems that in this market, the Japanese SUV couldn't keep up the pace of the BEV armada. Interestingly, of the 7 PHEV models here, 5 are SUV/CUVs...

In the manufacturers ranking, Tesla is (way) ahead, with 29% share, followed by BMW (13%), while Volkswagen and Hyundai, both with 9% share, run for the last place in the podium.

Looking at the midsize vehicles general ranking, the Model 3 was up to the 2nd spot, with the leader VW Passat not that far away, so it is still in firing range of the Tesla Midsizer.

In other kind of markets, more PHEV-friendly, the upcoming PHEV version of the Passat could help it to keep the Model 3 at bay, but on this case...Not really.

So, one can say that it's up entirely to the Model 3 to win this category in Austria.

Austria January 2019

BMW i3 #1 in January

Austrian plug-in sales started the year growing a moderate 12%, to 741 units, but because the mainstream market is sliding like it was on a ski slope (-12% YoY), the PEV share jumped to a record 2.9% in January, opening bright perspectives for this year

Looking at the models ranking, the BMW i3 jumped to the leadership, with the German hatchback profiting from the larger battery appeal to overcome everyone else.

The hot Hyundai Kona EV started the year in Second Place, with 84 deliveries, and promises to be a strong candidate for the 2019 title, unlike the 2018 winner, the VW e-Golf, that registered 71 units (down 38% YoY), earning the 3rd spot.

Underlining the good moment of Korean brands, both Kia nameplates scored record results last month, with the Niro EV delivering 36 units, while its PHEV sibling registered 12 units.

In the PHEV side, there were a number of great results, starting by the record 29 deliveries of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, making it the category Best Seller, while both Land Rovers with names as long as their size also made personal bests, with the LR RR Sport delivering 28 units, while its LR RR posher sibling registered 12 units.

But there also good results on the German carmakers too, the BMW 225xe AT registered 17 units, its best result in 17 months, while the new Mercedes C300e/de twins had 16 sales, the plugin C-Class best result in 15 months.

Finally, the BMW i8 Sports Car delivered 11 units, its best result since January '15(!), allowing not only a Top 20 spot, but more significantly, the #2 position in the Sports Car category, only behind the Ford Mustang (13 units), tying with its more normal BMW relative, the BMW 8-Series.

In the manufacturers ranking, BMW is back in the lead, with 20% share, followed by Hyundai (16%), while last year winner Volkswagen (11%) is a distant Third, having to keep an eye on Renault and Nissan, both with 9% share.

Austria December 2018

Last minute medalist

VW e-Golf #1 for the first time

Austrian plug-in sales were up 22% in 2018, to 8.848 unitsplacing the PEV Share at a record 2.6%, a 0.5% share rise over the 2017 result (2.1%).

The great surprise in December was the Hyundai Kona BEV scoring 143 deliveries, a new personal best, allowing it to jump four positions, to #6, making it a 100% BEV Top 7 in 2018.

Looking at the models yearly ranking, the VW e-Golf won its first Best Seller trophy, with 1.836 units, a new all-time high, and three times the 2017 registrations of the German BEV.

The four times winner (2017; '16; '14; '13) Renault Zoe this time ended in Second Place, with sales dropping 16% YoY, while the Third Spot saw a last minute change, with the Nissan Leaf surpassing the BMW i3, with the German hatch dropping to its lowest place since 2014, and the Japanese collecting its first medal since 2013.

Looking at PHEVs, the Porsche Panamera PHEV secured its first trophy in this category, resisting to the advances of the #10 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and #11 Mini Countryman PHEV.

Despite this win, the Porsche model lost the Best Selling Luxury PEV award to the #7 Tesla Model S, and this despite the Californian losing half(!) of sales in just one year…(Insert Model 3 long shadow comment)

Underlining what can be a promising 2019 for Korean makers, the Kia Niro EV landed in December, with 16 deliveries, promising to be another Top 10 model coming from the Hyundai-Kia stable.

In the manufacturers ranking, Volkswagen won its first title, with 22% share, followed by last year winner BMW (16%, down 1%), and Renault (13%, down 1%).

Looking into 2019, Volkswagen will have a hard time to retain both titles, as it will be a transition year between the e-Golf and the next generation BEV, the ID Neo.

The two strongest candidates to win #1 will be the Hyundai Kona BEV, possibly surpassing the 2,000 units, as long as they get enough batteries, of course, and the Tesla Model 3, that in theory can reach some 4,000 deliveries, but it could be hampered by Tesla focusing its deliveries in larger markets, like Norway, Netherlands or Germany.

Austria September 2018

Resultado de imagem para 2018 nissan leaf in austria

Nissan Leaf #1 in September

Austrian plug-in sales were down 6% in September, but looking at the 2018 numbers, sales are still positive (+15%), with some 6,200 units, placing the PEV Share at 2.3%.

Due to the previous pre-WLTP sales rush, PHEVs crashed in September (-26% YoY), while BEVs continued their steady growth (+6%), with all-electric cars representing 71% of sales. When governments play the incentives cards right, good things like these (Large BEV share) happen.

Looking at the models ranking, the VW e-Golf is firm in the leadership, with the German hatchback set to win its first Best Seller trophy in this market.

The four times winner (2017; '16; '14; '13) Renault Zoe is in Second Place, with the BMW i3 closing the podium, but the German Hot Hatch has to keep an eye on the #4 Nissan Leaf, that was last month Best Seller, with 135 units (New Personal Best), and is  now just 46 units behind.

In a 100% BEV Top 6, all-electric models are on the rise, with the #5 Hyundai Ioniq Electric having its best month in 8 months, by delivering 66 units, while the Tesla Model X was up two positions to #8.

The Best Selling PHEV is the Porsche Panamera PHEV, in #7, with 197 units, but the #14 BMW 225xe Active Tourer might still have a shot at the PHEV title, considering it is one of the few PHEVs unaffected by the new rules.

In the manufacturers ranking, Volkswagen is ahead, with 22% share, followed by BMW (17%), and Renault (14%).

Austria May 2018

Image result for VW e-Golf Austria

VW e-Golf #1

Austrian plug-in sales are up 40% this year, to some 3,600 new Plug-ins, placing the PEV Share at record heights (2.4%).

The good thing about this market is that it is a BEV-heavy market, with all-electric cars representing 71% of sales. When governments play the incentives cards right, good things like these (Large BEV share and growth) happen.

Looking at the models ranking, the VW e-Golf is firm in the leadership, with the German hatchback already surpassing last year performance (668 units) in just 5 months...And they are production constrained! Imagine if they weren't...

The Renault Zoe (+10% YoY) is in Second Place, with the BMW i3 closing the podium, despite slowing sales  (-14% YoY).

In a 100% BEV Top 5, the Nissan Leaf is now Fourth, thanks to the new generation, and could remove the BMW i3 from the last place in the podium soon.

The Best Selling PHEV is the Mercedes GLC350e, in #6, with 138 units, but the #8 Porsche Panamera PHEV is dangerously close, only 16 units behind, so the German Sports Sedan can overcome the Merc SUV sometime soon.

In the manufacturers ranking, Volkswagen is ahead, with 25% share, followed by BMW (17%), and Renault (15%).

"Was that a rocket that passed by us? No, it was the e-Golf. Wooow..."

VW e-Golf rocks the market

Austrian plug-in sales are up 46% this year, to over 1.200 new Plug-ins, placing the PEV Share at record heights (1.9%).

The good thing about this market is that it is a BEV-heavy market, with all-electric cars representing 70% of sales. When governments play the incentives cards right, good things like these (Large share and growth) happen.

Looking at the models ranking, the news of the year is the thundering leap of the VW e-Golf into the leadership, with two consecutive record performances (115 units in January and 191 in February), the German hatchback passed right by through the Renault Zoe and BMW i3, to sit in the Best Seller Throne, with space to spare.

Another BEV with a good start is the Hyundai Ioniq Electric, #4 with 122 units, it seems the increased production is starting to create some benefits for the Korean hatchback.

The same can't be said about the Tesla nameplates, with the Model S only Seventh, and the Model X in #17.

Will we see a recovery for the American brand in March?

In the manufacturers ranking, Volkswagen is ahead with 12% share, followed by BMW (8%), and Renault (7%).

Just outside the podium, we have Hyundai, with 6%, waiting for more units allocation of their Ioniq twins (BEV & PHEV), in order to jump into the podium.

But then again, all podium bearers have that same problem...

Austria December 2017

Renault Zoe #1

The Austrian plug-in sales were up 43% in 2017 to over 7.000 units, placing the PEV Share at record heights (2.1%).

The good thing about this market is that it is a BEV-heavy market, with all-electric cars representing 75% of sales.

Looking at the models ranking, the three times winner ('13, '14 & '16) Renault Zoe won another Best Seller award, managing to keep the BMW i3 at bay, while the German hot hatch had its third consecutive runner-up spot, both repeating the same places they had in '16.

The same can't be said about the Third Place, where the VW e-Golf benefitted from the new 36kWh battery to climb in the ranking and surpass the Tesla Model S, winning its first Bronze Medal.

The Hyundai Ioniq Electric was the model that most progressed, ending the year in #5, with the 2017 Rookie of the Year being the BMW 530e, that ended in #14.

In the manufacturers ranking, BMW (21%) repeated the 2016 title, winning the race to Renault (19%).

In Third Place, Tesla (12%) managed to win the race to Volkswagen (11%), with the podium positions being exacly the same as in 2016.
