Markets Roundup December 2018

Image result for EV cars gathering

I. Big Markets

Let's see how the Big EV Markets fared in 2018:

China

* BAIC EC-Series #1 - Once again the winner, but in 2019 it will have more competition;

* 1.1 million units - At some point i started to expect 1 million units, and as the year came to an end, not only it got there, but actually surpassed it!. And the Market Share reached 4.2%, a bit more than the 2%-something of the USA or Europe.

USA

* Tesla Model 3 #1 - First win for the Californian, the first of a couple wins that the nameplate will have until the Model Y lands;

* 350.000 sales - Strong second half of the year, leading to a 2.1% share.

Europe

* Nissan Leaf #1 - The Japanese hatchback won its first title since 2013, but it shouldn't repeat the feat in 2019, as that trophy should go for the Tesla Model 3;

* 386.000 units - Sales continue to grow steadily, with the PEV share reaching 2.5%, with plug-in hybrids losing importance, with BEV's now outselling PHEV's.

Japan

* Nissan Leaf #1 - Despite lack of real competition, the Nissan hatch did its part and won another title;

* 52.000 units - What can i say, sales have dropped 7% and the PEV share has dropped to 1%. Big disappointment.

Canada

* Tesla Model 3 #1 - The new darling in Canada. How could it be otherwise?

* 43.000 units - Strong, steady growth, with the market share ending at a record 2.2%.

South Korea

* Hyundai Kona EV #1 - Veni, vidi, vici. In only 8 months in the market, the Hyundai model surpassed everyone else, scoring even a new all-time record (11.000 units). The Kona EV is the EV Disruptor in Korea.

* 31.000 sales - A hot market, with doubling sales, and the market share now reaching 1.7%. How high will it reach in 2019? 3%? 4%? 5%?

III. Other markets

A few words on smaller markets:

New Zealand - Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV turf, PEV share above 1% (1.4%);

Israel - Mercedes GLC350e was #1, market has beaten all records in 2018 and reached 1.4% share. Too many PHEVs, though;

Malaysia - BMW is king here, market is stable at around 1.2% share;

Australia - Slow growth, with the Tesla Model S winning the Best Seller title;

Brazil - Symbolic sales (less than 200 units) in such a large market, BYD e5 was the Best Seller;

Russia - Ditto for Russia (less than 300 units), Nissan Leaf stole the 2018 title from Tesla;

Mexico - Nissan Leaf wins again, in a falling market;

UAE - Tesla turf;

South Africa - BMW are the only ones doing something here;

Colombia - Fast growth is starting to move the needle (0.3% share), Renault Twizy is a popular choice, same as the BMW i3;

Taiwan - Stagnating market (less than 200 units), this time the local Luxgen LCS EV won #1;

India - Considering the size of the market, the 2.000 units registered could be considered symbolic. Tata and Mahindra are the only ones on the market, with compliance vehicles;

Thailand - Less than 1.000 units, the 2018 trophy was still for BMW, but Hyundai should steal the 2019 title.

New Zealand December 2018

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV wins 5th title in a row, but Hyundai wins Manufacturers

Plugins remain a hot item in New Zealand, last month, 92 units were sold in New Zealand, up 31% YoY, pulling the year result to a record 1,523 units, and placing the final 2018 PEV Share at 1.4%, more than double of last year result (0.6%). Will we see it reach 3% in 2019?

Looking at the models ranking, the 2018 Models title remained in the hands wheels of the  Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, that thanks to the arrival of the revised MY 2019 version, scored a record 300 deliveries in 2018, making this year title, its Fifth in a row.

The runner-up spot went again for the Hyundai Ioniq Electric, slightly improving on the 2017 result (221 vs 206), while the last place of the podium has the Tesla Model X winning its first Medal, with 146 deliveries, while its older sibling, the Model S, saw its registrations drop 16% in 2018, ending the year in #6. Is the Tesla Model 3 long shadow also hitting the Model S in New Zealand? More on that later…

Elsewhere, two fresh faces have made an impression, with the Toyota Prius PHEV shooting to #4 in its first year on the market (at the expense of the regular HEV version, that suffered heavy losses this year), while the Hyundai Kona EV ended the year in #7, despite having only landed on the second half of the year.

In the Manufacturers ranking, Hyundai was the surprise winner, with 25% share, placing three models in the Top 10, while the seven times Best Selling Manufacturer Mitsubishi dropped to Second Place (20%), and Tesla (17%) took the last place of the podium.

Looking into 2019, the Outlander PHEV will have a hard time to renew its Best Seller title, as the Hyundai Kona EV will build on the current performances and try to replace it on the leadership, while the Tesla Model 3, set to land on the second half of the year, should win enough deliveries to have a shot at #1.

But even if the Japanese SUV wins in 2019, the 2020 Models title should go the Tesla Model 3, as it benefits from its first full deliveries year, possibly reaching some 900 deliveries by that time.

Hyundai Kona BEV on the rise

Plugins are a hot item in New Zealand, last month, 167 units were sold in New Zealand, up 86% YoY, and pulling the year result to 1,152 units, placing the 2018 PEV Share at a record 1.5%, while the September share was even better, hitting 1.8%.

Looking at the models ranking, the 2018 leadership is in the hands wheels of the usual Best Seller, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, that thanks to the arrival of the revised MY 2019 version, scored its best result ever in this market, with 54 deliveries (And second best performance for a single model, only behind the 83 units achieved by the Hyundai Ioniq Electric, in October '17).

Last month result allowed the Japanese SUV to gain a significant advantage over the #2 Hyundai Ioniq Electric, while the last place of the podium has two Teslas and the VW e-Golf running for it, with the Model X being the new Bronze bearer, after surpassing the German nameplate last month.

But lately, the big news was the landing of the Hyundai Kona BEV, that was #4 last month, with 15 deliveries, while YTD it is already #10, but at this pace it should end at least in Seventh.

Elsewhere, the Audi A3 e-Tron had a good month, delivering 10 units, its best result in 10 months, while we salute a new face here, with the LDV Maxus EV80 electric van reaching the Top 20, in #18.

In the Manufacturers ranking, Hyundai is the surprise leader, with 24% share, placing three models in the Top 10, while the seven times Best Selling Manufacturer Mitsubishi is in Second Place (20%), and Tesla (18%) is Third, while Volkswagen (9%) is a distant Fourth.

New Zealand April 2018

Prius PHEV lands with a bang

Last month, 104 plug-ins were sold in New Zealand, up 154%, and pulling the year result to 423 units, helping to place the PEV Share at a record 1.2%.

Looking at the models ranking, the 2018 leadership is in the hands wheels of the usual Best Seller, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, followed by the rising Teslas, with the Model S registering its best off-peak month (18 units), and climbing one position, into Second Place, while the Model X jumped three positions, now being Third.

But the big news was the landing of the PHEV version of the Prius, with 20 registrations in its landing month, a new debut best on this market, and considering the popularity of Toyota in New Zealand, one would say that the leader Outlander PHEV could have here its biggest threat so far.

Elsewhere, Hyundai had a good month, as it saw its Ioniq PHEV climb two positions, to #12, while the BEV version came closer to reach Fourth, thanks to 10 deliveries, while the Porsche Panamera PHEV had its best month so far, by delivering 3 units, jumping to #14 and confirming the popularity of the new Sports Sedan worldwide.

In the Manufacturers ranking, Tesla is the surprise leader, with 27%, while the seven times Best Selling Manufacturer Mitsubishi is in Second Place (17%), and Hyundai (11%) in Third, but BMW (10%) and Volkswagen (9%) are on the lookout for an opportunity to join the podium.

New Zealand February 2018

BMW i3 Charges On , VW e-Golf #1

Last month, 95 plug-ins were sold in New Zealand, pulling the year result to 193 units and  placing the PEV Share above the all-important 1% threshold, at 1.1% a new record.

Looking at the models ranking, the leadership is in the hands wheels of the usual Best Seller, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, but this time it is tied with the VW e-Golf, that thanks to a record 23 deliveries in January, started the year with a bang.

The Tesla Model S is in the last place of the podium, with 23 registrations, immediately followed by the BMW i3, with 22 units, 16 of them in February, can the German Hot Hatch continue to impress in the following months?

Besides the i3, there was another surprise result in February, with the Kia Niro PHEV registering 10 units in its first full sales month, a promising result for the Korean Crossover, will it be able to dispute the Outlander PHEV reign in this market?

In the Manufacturers ranking, there is a surprise, with Tesla leading the pack, with 18%, while the seven times Best Selling Manufacturer Mitsubishi is tied in Second Place with Volkswagen, both with 15% share, and BMW (14%) is on the lookout for an opportunity to join the podium.

New Zealand December 2017

Outlander PHEV Wins New Zealand

Last year, 977 plug-ins were sold in New Zealand, doubling the result achieved in 2016, with the PEV Share ending at 0.6%, double of what it was in the previous year (0.3%). Will we see it reach 1% in 2018?

Looking at the models ranking, the Best Seller thophy went for fourth time in a row for the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, with 255 units (New yearly record for a single model), but this year it had a serious competitor, as the Hyundai Ioniq Electric registered 206 units, placing an unexpected pressure on the Japanese SUV.

Profiting from the official arrival of the brand, the two Teslas jumped to Third and Fourth in 2017, with the older Model S overcoming its Model X sibling and winning the first models Medal in New Zealand for the American brand.

The VW e-Golf was #7, with sales up four fold regarding the previous year, mostly thanks to the arrival of the new 36 kWh version.

New Zealand is Mitsubishi turf, as 2017 was the seventh time that the Japanese manufacturer won the Best Selling brand award, with 26% share, but this time Tesla (25%,  up 1%) was really close from stealing the Thunder from Mitsu, something only Nissan (2012) was able to do so far.

In Third Place, another newcomer shows up, with Hyundai winning Bronze in its first full year here.

Will the Mitsu winning streak continue into 2018? Mmmm...

Comparing plug-ins with regular hybrids, we can see the results of a growing PEV market share, if in the past only the Outlander PHEV could compete with HEVs, and even then it was an occasional presence in the Top 5, now there are three plug-ins in the Top 5, with the Outlander PHEV in a podium position, while the Tesla Model X was Fourth and the German VWe-Golf in Fifth, albeit tied with the Ioniq HEV(!) and Prius C..
