Renault Zoe: An increasingly common sight in Lisbon

Renault Zoe Superstar

PEV Sales continue on the rise in Portugal, with sales in 2018 up 169% YoY, to 920 units, and the Plug-in Share at a record 2.6%, there's good reasons to be optimistic and even hope for a 3-4% share by year end.

Looking at the fuels mix, this market was (is) known for its diesel-addiction, due to an unbalanced taxation between gasoline (heavily taxed) and diesel (not so), but even here, there are historic times, with diesel sales down 10%, in a growing market (+4%), leading to a share drop of 9%, from 64% a year ago, to the current 55%. At this rate, diesel sales will be dead in Portugal by 2024...

The diesel demise is the gain of every other fuel, regular gasoline powered cars are up 23% YoY, HEVs are growing 55%, LPG is up 80%, while BEVs are jumping 94%, to 1.1% share, and PHEVs are shooting three-fold, now holding 1.5% of the total market, making them responsible for 56% of the total PEV market. Considering this once was BEV turf, it is sad to see another market favour Plug-in hybrids over all-electric vehicles, but hey, growth is growth, right?

Moving on, after years of underwelming performances, the Renault Zoe finally lived up to expectations in 2017, winning last year Best Seller trophy, its first, and 2018 is going the same way, with the Frech hatchback delivering 144 units in February, a new absolute record for any single model in this market, contributing to the fact that 1 in 4 passenger PEVs registered in Portugal this year is a Zoe...

Kudos for the local Renault importer for believing in its electric supermini sales potential. Then again, their lead is said to be short-lived, as rumours say that Nissan already has some 800-900 orders for its new Leaf waiting to be delivered...

The following places are in the hands of company-car friendly cars, while the BMW i3 is in a surprisingly low place, in Ninth. Lack of demand or not enough units to deliver?

As for BMW Plug-in hybrids, they continue to flourish ,with the 530e in Second Place, being also the best selling PHEV, while the 330e is now #4 and the 225xe Active Tourer is #6.

Confirming BMW's good moment here, the Mini Countryman PHEV is also among the best sellers, in #6.

Looking below, the Passat GTE is the best selling Volkswagen, in #12, while the e-Golf is in an unusually low #19. The local importer needs to focus more on Plug-ins and then getting enough units from the Mothership...

In the manufacturers ranking, Renault (24%) is slightly ahead of last year winner BMW (23%), while Mercedes (14%) is a comfortable Third, ahead of Smart (9%).

Portugal December 2017

Image result for Renault Zoe Portugal

Renault Zoe wins #1 and BMW shines in fast growing market

PEV Sales continue on the fast lane in Portugal, with sales hitting a new record (The third in a row) in December, with 561 registrations (Up 153%YoY), pulling the 2017 registrations to a final tally of 4.237 units, up 126% regarding 2016, with the PEV share ending at a record 1.9% (3.2% in December).

Looking at the fuels mix, in the full year data it is possible to see some important changes, with Diesel losing 4% share, to 61%, an important drop in a diesel-addicted market, but more relevant for the future are the December results:

- Diesel sales dropped 14%, with their share of the market stumbling from 67% a year ago, to 58%, a sharp 9% drop;

- Regular Petrol/Gasoline car sales grew 22%, with the sales share growing 6%, to 34%;

- Electrified models grew significantly, not only HEVs (+36%), but especially BEVs (+144%) and PHEVs (+154%), with this category earning 2% share, to 6% of the mainstream market;

- Even LPG grew significantly (+65%) in December, now representing close to 2% of the sales, which means that Diesel is losing sales to every other fuel, accentuating its demise.

In the models PEV ranking, after years of underwelming performances, the Renault Zoe has finally spread its wings, leading the market in 2017 with a record 751 registrations, winning its first Best Seller trophy, but BMW's company-car friendly lineup, (Companies have VAT-exemption when buying plug-ins up to a certain price) have been shining lately, as more and more fleet managers realize the advantages of buying plug-ins PHEVs, proof of that are the Second Place of the BMW 330e and Third Place of the 530e, with this last model being also the Rookie of the Year.

Last year winner, the Nissan Leaf, was pushed out of the podium in the last month of the year, but with the revised 40kWh version landing in a few months, aided by the usual aggressive pricing of the local Nissan importer, the Japanese hatchback is set to regain the #1 spot in 2018.

Looking elsewhere, the Mercedes GLC350e SUV replicated the success earned in other markets, by reaching #7 last year, ending as the best selling three-pointed-star model, cannibalizing sales of its C350e relative, which dropped from Second to Eighth.

Further down the ranking, the Mercedes E350e and Mini Countryman PHEV had successful landings in 2017, while the new Smart brand BEVs were off to a great start, jumping into the Top 20, with the #14 Fortwo ED scoring a record 35 units last month, while the #20 Forfour ED also scored a best ever 16 registrations. A promising start, let's hope the Daimler Mothership can make enough units to satisfy demand.

The official landing of Tesla is starting to bear fruits, with deliveries up four fold, to 153 units and 4% share, but because their models pricing stand outside the VAT incentives, the real attack on Mercedes and BMW sales will only happen in 2019, when the Model 3 arrives...

Speaking of manufacturers, BMW revalidated the 2016 title in '17, with 30% share, followed by Renault (18%) and Mercedes (13%, down 1%).

As a side note, Volkswagen in Portugal has only 6% share, half of what it has in Europe, while its Premium daughter, Audi has...0% share.

As plug-ins reach new heights, it starts to be interesting to compare them with regular hybrids, here a class still owned by Toyota, as the local Hyundai/Kia importers are still unaware of this niche potential, that has also grown significantly, as people leave their diesel-addiction for electrified models.

Nevertheless, the Third Place seems attainable by plug-ins, so in the near future the Toyota domination is likely to be dented, not only by the Renault Zoe, but especially by the arrival of the new Nissan Leaf, that could sell regularly above the 100 units/month threshhold.

The Fifth Place of the BMW 530e is a surprise, but it is also another sign that companies are leaving their diesel addiction and going electric.

Portugal October 2017 (Updated)

Image result for Renault Zoe Portugal

BMW 530e, #1 in October, Renault Zoe #1 YTD

PEV Sales continue on the rise in Portugal, with sales hitting a new record in October, with 437 registrations (Up 175%), and sales in 2017 up 109% YoY to 3.095 units, with the PEV share at a record 1.7%, there's good reasons to be optimistic and see maybe registrations reach 4.000 units this year.

After years of underwelming performances, the Renault Zoe is living up to expectations, leading the market with 574 registrations, but this month the best seller was the BMW 530e, with 77 deliveries, a company-car friendly model, as companies have VAT-exemption when buying plug-ins up to a certain price.

With a new Leaf landing in a few months, it will be interesting to see if the Japanese hatchback regains the #1 spot.

A popular brand is BMW, with three models in the Top 5, with the 530e jumping to Fifth Place and on its way to add the best selling PHEV title to the Rookie Of The Year award.

This is one of the few markets where the Mercedes C350e still outsells its GLC350e SUV-relative, but with the GLC climbing to #6, becoming the new best selling SUV, and only 11 units behind the C-Class, the Mercedes AWD model might still end the year as the best selling three-pointed-star model.

Further down the ranking, the Smart brand BEVs had a great official landing, jumping into the Top 30, with the new Fortwo ED scoring more in a month (22) than in its predecessor in its best year (21 units, in 2013). A promising start, let's hope it is followed by further positive performances.

In the manufacturers ranking, BMW is an increasingly stronger leader, with 30% share (Up 1%), followed by Renault (18%, down 1%) and Mercedes (14%, down 2%).

EV Distribution - Portugal October 2017

Almost two years have passed since the last survey regarding the distribution of EV's in my home country, based on used car websites and other sources, i have updated it, remembre, this should only be seen as an indication of how electric vehicles are distributed across the portuguese territory.

For the information to be easier to understand for people not familiar with the local geography, i have divided the country in seven areas: Northwest (Porto, Aveiro, Braga and Viana do Castelo  districts), Northeast (Bragança, Vila Real, Guarda and Viseu), Center (Coimbra, Castelo Branco, Leiria and Santarém), Lisbon Metropolitan Area (Lisbon and Setubal), South (Portalegre, Evora, Beja and Faro), Azores and Madeira Islands.

Let's look at the distribution of the sample EV's:

Northwest

Following Lisbon Metro area, this is the second area with most PEV's (33%), the BMW i3 has surpassed the Nissan Leaf as the most popular EV, with a little help from imports, while the Volvo V60 Plug-In continues to be a local success story, being Third in the survey, with more than half of units in Portugal being located here.

Northeast

Known for having the harshest conditions in mainland Portugal, with several 1000mts-plus mountains in the area, cold winters, including sub-sero temperatures and the seasonal snow, while in the summer near-40ºC temperatures are the norm, it would be expected that PHEV's and especially the Outlander PHEV would be popular here. That's not the case, in a small market (4% of total), the most common EV is the Nissan Leaf, with 3 units, followed by the BMW i3 and the Renault Twizy(!). It must be interesting to drive the Twizy in freezing temperatures...

Center

In the transitional North-South area, responsible for 18% of the total stock, the Nissan Leaf is the most popular choice, with PHEV imports being quite popular, as the second most common plug-in in this area is the Opel Ampera, a nameplate that barely was sold in Portugal when new, while the BMW i3 is Third, with a strong prevalence of the Rex version.

Lisbon Metropolitan Area

Lisbon is not only the nation's capital, but also the only place where you stumble on EV's everywhere, with 35% of the total plug-in fleet. The most common EV is the Nissan Leaf, followed by the Renault Zoe, a car that has been selling substancially here, and BMW i3. Lisbon also has the most heterogeneous offer, with seemingly every model on sale in Portugal.

South

In this area, most of EV's are concentrated in the tourist-friendly Algarve, with the BMW i3 becoming the most popular choice, while the Outlander PHEV is the second most common plug-in.

The Nissan Leaf, the most common EV in Portugal, here is only Third, possibly due to customers being wary of the Leaf battery-degradation reputation in hot climates.

Azores Islands

Plug-ins are still in their infancy here, with only 2% of the country's PEV stock, with the complete lack of public infrastructure not helping at all, which is a shame, as the mild climate and short distances are good conditions for plug-ins. Anyway, the most common EV here are the BMW i3 and Renault Twizy, both with 2 units.

Madeira Islands

The Madeira EV scene is much more developed than in the Azores, with public infrastructure, including fast-charging and serious investment from local importers, especially Renault. The most common EV here is the Renault Zoe, followed by the Twizy. with the Nissan Leaf being the Third most common EV here.

Conclusions

That the Nissan Leaf is a success story across mainland Portugal, we already knew, but recent sucess story of the Renault Zoe is something new, especially in the Lisbon metro area and in Madeira, while the Mitsu Outlander PHEV is still the most common plug-in hybrid, strangely more popular in the southern areas than in the north, where ice and snow can be a problem. Then again, most people buy SUV's because they "want" one, not because they "need" it...

Teslas are starting to be scattered across the country, but the reality is that EV's are still concentrated around Lisbon and in the NW (Braga-Porto-Aveiro) industrial belt.

Portugal September 2017

Image result for Renault Zoe Portugal

Renault Zoe #1

EV Sales continue on the rise in Portugal, with sales in 2017 up 101% YoY to 2.654 units, with the PEV share at a record 1.5%, there's good reasons to be optimistic and see registrations reach 4.000 units this year.

After years of underwelming performances, the Renault Zoe is finally living up to expectations, leading the market with 524 registrations, with its stock numbers (903 units) only 100 units below the most common EV in Portugal, the Nissan Leaf.

With a new Leaf landing in a few months, it will be interesting to see if the Japanese hatchback outsells its French cousin in this market.

Another popular brand is BMW, with the BMW 330e in Third Place overall, while also being the best selling PHEV, while the i3 is #4 and the BMW 530e is #8, being the highest standing Rookie

This is one of the few markets where the Mercedes C350e still outsells its GLC350e SUV-relative. Blame it on company-car deals, which is also the same reason why the BMW 330e is so well placed.

Further down the ranking, two novelties are tied in #16, the Mini Countryman PHEV has registered a record 14 units last month, with the Mini plug-in confirming to be a success story, while the VW e-Golf had 11 deliveries, a new personal best, let's hope the larger battery coincides with a renewed effort from the local importer to promote the car and place it in a Top 10 place. Considering the several months waiting list, demand won't be a problem...

In the manufacturers ranking, thanks to a strong lineup, BMW is in the lead, with 29% share (Up 1%), followed by Renault (19%) and Mercedes (16%, up 2%).

Renault Zoe: An increasingly common sight in Lisbon

Renault Zoe (finally!) Lives up to its full potential

EV Sales continue on the rise in Portugal, with sales in 2017 up 106% YoY to 2.062 units, and the Plug-in Share at a record 1.5%, there's good reasons to be optimistic and even hope for a 2% share by year end.

After years of underwelming performances, the Renault Zoe finally lived up to expectations, leading the market with 437 registrations, already above the yearly all-time record of the Nissan Leaf (328 units) set in 2016. And there's still four months to go...

Kudos for the local Renault importer for finally believing in its electric supermini sales potential. Of course, the 40 kWh version helped, maybe just a teeny bit...

The Second Place is in the hands wheels of its Alliance cousin, with the Nissan Leaf setting a new personal best last month(!), with 61 deliveries, a significant feat for ageing nameplate (The Leaf II is just around the corner), with Nissan now harnessing the fruits for spreading the word since the beggining, back in 2010, making the Leaf synonymous with EV in Portugal, but also due to heavy discounts, placing it almost in price parity with its ICE relative, the Pulsar.

Another popular brand is BMW, with the BMW 330e in Third Place overall, while also being the best selling PHEV, while the i3 is now #4.

This is one of the few markets where the Mercedes C350e still outsells its GLC350e SUV-relative. Blame it on company-car deals, which is also the same reason why the BMW 330e is so well placed.

The BMW 530e is proving to be a success here too, having jumped to #11 last month, thanks to a record 24 units last month, allowing it to overcome its E350e arch-rival, while at the same time becoming the best selling new model this year.

In the manufacturers ranking, thanks to a strong lineup, BMW is in the lead, with 28% share, followed by Renault (21%) and Mercedes (14%).

Image result for BMW i3 in portugal
Who said you couldn't do long trips on an i3?...

BMW ahead of the pack

EV Sales continue on the rise in Portugal, with sales in 2017 up 88% YoY to 1.289 units, with the Plug-in Share at a record 1.3%, with the PEV fleet of passenger cars having just surpassed the 5.000 units.

At this pace, we expect 2017 to end at some 2.500-3.000 3.500-4.000 registrations by year end, with the EV Share ending firmly north of the 1,5% barrier.

After years of underwelming performances, the Renault Zoe finally rose to the expectations, leading the market with 238 registrations, already above the result achieved in the whole of 2016.

The Second Place is in the hands wheels of its Alliance cousin, with the Nissan Leaf selling in enough volume (31 units last month) to be the runner-up, a significant feat for ageing nameplate, with Nissan now harnessing the fruits for spreading the word since the beggining, back in 2010, now making the Leaf synonymous with EV in Portugal.

Another popular brand is BMW, placing three models in the Top 10, which has been profiting from the company car business to pull the BMW 330e to Third Place overall, while also being the best selling PHEV.

Finally, Mercedes GLC350e registered a record 18 units last month, thus replicating the success that the SUV has been experiencing across Europe and reaching #8.

In the manufacturers ranking, thanks to a strong lineup, BMW is baack in the lead, with 28% share, followed by Renault (19%) and Mercedes (14%).
