Switzerland May 2016

If the S is shaking the Swiss market, then imagine what the X will do...

Tesla Edition

The Swiss EV market registered more than 350 units last month, down 40% YoY, with the EV Share also down to 1.75%.

Looking at the models ranking, the leader Tesla Model S had an off month, selling only 59 units, down 16% YoY, dropping one position to Third Place in its size class, ahead of the Audi A6 (582 units) and behind the Mercedes E-Class (605), and the leader BMW 5-Series (714 units).

Of course, June will see the Model S deliveries jump to a 200-something performance and recover the runner-up place, it is as certain as snow falling next winter in the Valais Swiss Canton...

The Nissan Leaf dropped two positions to #7, registering only 11 units, it seems that the boost from the 30kWh version has faded, is the Japanese hatch condemned to a downward trend for the rest of 2016?

In the manufacturers ranking, Tesla is comfortably ahead, with 27% share, down 2%, followed by Volkswagen and Audi, both tied with 13% share.

If the S is shaking the Swiss market, then imagine what the X will do...

Tesla Edition

The Swiss EV market registered some 400 units last month, down 28% YoY, with the EV Share also down to 1.82%.

Looking at the models ranking, the leader Tesla Model S had an off month, selling only 98 units, down 16% YoY, but enough to keep its YTD position (Second Place) in its size class, ahead of the Audi A6 (469 units) and Mercedes E-Class (509), but behind the leader BMW 5-Series (589 units).

In a market with a soft spot for high powered sports cars, the BMW i8 performance this year is a bit disappointing, having registered 32 units, 9 less than in the same period last year and far behind the six-figures-class best sellers, like the Porsche 911 (478 units!), Mercedes-AMG GT (100) or even the Ferrari 488 GTB (61).

In the manufacturers ranking, Tesla is comfortably ahead, with 29% share, down 1%, followed by Volkswagen and Audi, both tied with 13% share.

If the S is shaking the Swiss market, then imagine what the X will do...

Tesla Shines Edition

The Swiss EV market registered nearly 600 units last month, up 12% YoY, with the EV Share up to 1.96%, almost on par with last year 1.98%.

Looking at the models ranking, the Tesla Model S showed a strong performance, with a near record 234 deliveries, cementing its lead the EV ranking, with 430 units and 30% share, but also disturbing their ICE competitors, outselling the Audi A6 (328 units this year) and Mercedes E-Class (335), while closing in to the leader BMW 5-Series (453 units).

Actually, March was a positive month for BEV's in general, with other all-electric models presenting good results: The Renault Zoe registered 52 units, its best result of the year, moving up one position to #4, the Nissan Leaf jumped six positions to #6, thanks to 49 deliveries, a personal best, and even the oldie Mitsubishi I-Miev rose four positions to #14, with the 16 sales registered last month being its best result in three years(!)...

In the manufacturers ranking, Tesla increased the lead, with 30% share, up 7%, followed by  Volkswagen and Audi, both tied with 13% share.

BMW i8 is going head-to-head with the best

BMW i8 Shines Edition

The Swiss EV market registered nearly 400 units last month, up 41% YoY, a good sign for the rest of the year, with the EV Share at 1.73%.

Looking at the models ranking, there weren't many changes, the Tesla Model S had a slow month, with only 58 deliveries, its worst result in a year, but still enough to keep leading the EV ranking, with 196 units, and continue to disturb their ICE competitors, outselling the Audi A6 (191 units this year) and  running close to the BMW 5-Series (274 sales) and Mercedes E-Class (237).

The Renault Zoe registered only 20 units, its worst result in 17 months, while the BMW i8 had the same amount of sales of the french hatch, these 20 deliveries was the second best month ever for the german sports car, only beaten by the 23 units of July '15, comparing the i8's 25 units sold this year to its closest rivals (Audi R8 - 1 unit in '16; Jaguar F-Type - 6; Mercedes AMG GT - 36), BMW's car from the future looks pretty well positioned, especially considering that the i8 is actually outselling the whole BMW 6-Series lineup (Coupé, Cabrio and 4-door Grand Coupé), that have 24 units registered YTD, this is another proof that others, other than Tesla, can go head-to-head with the regular ICE-competition.

Now about that pesky Porsche 911 (184 units)...Too much to ask, BMW?

In the manufacturers ranking, Tesla continues to lead, with 23% share, followed by #2 Volkswagen (21%) and #3 Audi (13%).

Tesla is eating  ICE's cake for breakfast in Switzerland

New Year, Old Habits Edition

The Swiss EV market started the year with 454 units last month, up 63% YoY, a good sign for the rest of the year.

Looking at the models ranking, there weren't many changes regarding 2015, the Tesla Model S continues to impress, it is Numero Uno in the EV ranking, with 138 units, outselling their ICE competitors, Audi A6 (117 unis) and BMW 5-Series (107), only losing to the Merc E-Class (151).

The BMW i3 had only 17 registrations, its worst performance in 11 months, being outsold by the Renault Zoe (29 units), a mere blip or something to continue?

In the manufacturers ranking, Tesla continues to lead, with 30% share, followed by the #2 Volkswagen (20%) and #3 Audi (12%).

Switzerland December 2015

Tesla-land Edition

The Swiss EV market reached the 587 units last month, with the full year sales almost tripling sales regarding 2014.

The EV Share is now at a round 1.98%, a stark departure from the 0.75% of 2014.

The Tesla Model S was the Star of the Show last December, with 193 units, and it has been this way since the year started, tripling sales regarding last year and outselling this year runner-up (BMW i3), by a factor of 2-to-1.

In fact, the american car managed to get in the way of the Three Marys (Audi A6, BMW 5-Series and Mercedes E-Class), by stealing the Third Place away from the Mercedes product. Will 2016 be the year that crowns the Model S as the Best Seller of its class? The Audi A6 was the 2015 Best Seller with 1.990 units, so it isn't much of a stretch for them.

Looking elsewhere, we must refer the strange case of the Opel Ampera, delivering 22 units last month, its best result since 2012...Stock Clearance?

In the manufacturers ranking, Tesla finally recovered the Manufacturers title of the Modern Era, after having won it back in 2009, when 20 Roadsters were enough to take the crown home.

Volkswagen (16%) recovered the Second Place lost to BMW (Third, with 15%) in the previous month.

Regarding the BEV/PHEV breakdown, plug-in hybrids managed to recover ground to pure electrics, having now 36% share, versus 29% in 2014.

This market will continue to be Tesla turf in the foreseeable future, counting with the Model X as a valuable sales reinforcement. As for total numbers, i guess the growth rate will decrease a little, so my forecast will be around 9.000 units.

BMW i3 Goes Interstellar Edition

The Swiss EV market reached the 659 units last month, the eighth ninth time in a row that it stayed above the 500 units/month, tripling sales regarding the same month last year and only 75 units less than the all time high, set last June (734 units).

The EV Share is now at a round 2%, growing 167%(!) YoY, and placing Switzerland as the Seventh market with highest market share.

This time it wasn't the Tesla Model S time to shine, after five consecutive months winning the Monthly Best Seller trophy, always with sales in the three-digit area, the 7-seater Sports Sedan  had an off month: Only 94 units.

However, the Hero Of The Month was the BMW i3, registering 227 units, beating its personal record of 194 units set in May, while also being the first car after the Model S to reach the 200-something score, most certainly securing the Second Place YTD with this extraordinary performance.

Looking elsewhere, we must refer the curious case of the Mitsu I-Miev french cousins, the Citröen C-Zero and Peugeot iOn, both tripling sales regarding last year, returning to the sales levels of 2012...Did the PSA Group finally realized that EV's should be an important bet, not only for the immediate future (Citröen e-Mehari), but also for the present? Oh, and it would be nice for them to think about a  Citröen C4 e-Cactus, i will send that wish in my letter to Santa...

In the manufacturers ranking, Tesla lost 2% share to 23%, but still leads with a comfortable margin over the new #2, BMW (17%), that has surpassed Volkswagen (16%), last month, with Renault steady in Fourth, with 10% share.
