Looking for EV's - Saltspring Island (Canada)

During several discussions over the years i had regarding EV's, one of the recurring topics has been that EV's make (even) more sense in small islands / territories, especially in mild climates, where range anxiety / degradation isn't much of a concern.

As an example of these facts, here is a case study that one of our readers introduced me to, and something that i think could be replicated elsewhere, the territory in hand is Saltspring Island, a 183 km2 island between Vancouver and Victoria, in Canada's BC, where it is claimed to have one of the highest concentrations of pure electrics in the American Continent, with 61 EV's in a population of 10.000 inhabitants.

Here are a couple of links to know more about this case study, where you will find some basic but important initiatives that ordinary people did to help EV owners, in the spirit of "Do to other as you wish them to do to you.":

If you know more cases as the one described above, please communicate them to our email (efeelblog@gmail.com), so more people know about it and benefit from the exchange of experiences between EV promoters.

Switzerland November 2015

BMW i3 Goes Interstellar Edition

The Swiss EV market reached the 659 units last month, the eighth ninth time in a row that it stayed above the 500 units/month, tripling sales regarding the same month last year and only 75 units less than the all time high, set last June (734 units).

The EV Share is now at a round 2%, growing 167%(!) YoY, and placing Switzerland as the Seventh market with highest market share.

This time it wasn't the Tesla Model S time to shine, after five consecutive months winning the Monthly Best Seller trophy, always with sales in the three-digit area, the 7-seater Sports Sedan  had an off month: Only 94 units.

However, the Hero Of The Month was the BMW i3, registering 227 units, beating its personal record of 194 units set in May, while also being the first car after the Model S to reach the 200-something score, most certainly securing the Second Place YTD with this extraordinary performance.

Looking elsewhere, we must refer the curious case of the Mitsu I-Miev french cousins, the Citröen C-Zero and Peugeot iOn, both tripling sales regarding last year, returning to the sales levels of 2012...Did the PSA Group finally realized that EV's should be an important bet, not only for the immediate future (Citröen e-Mehari), but also for the present? Oh, and it would be nice for them to think about a  Citröen C4 e-Cactus, i will send that wish in my letter to Santa...

In the manufacturers ranking, Tesla lost 2% share to 23%, but still leads with a comfortable margin over the new #2, BMW (17%), that has surpassed Volkswagen (16%), last month, with Renault steady in Fourth, with 10% share.

Germany November 2015

Renault Zoe beats Kia Soul EV

Some 2.700 EV's were sold last month in Germany, up 130% regarding the same month last year, with the EV Share going further north to 0,71%, up some 0,03% regarding the previous month and a significant departure from 2014, having recorded at the time 0,44% share.

As tradition in the German EV market, there is always something interesting to talk about, this time, after three impressive wins by the Kia Soul EV, there is a new Monthly Best Seller, the Renault Zoe registered 465 units, three more than the Korean, beating its own personal record and returning to #1 for the first time this year.

Below the Top Two, the BMW i3 posted an impressive 314 units, its best result ever, while the VW Passat GTE was Fourth, thanks to 280 sales, a new record, consistently beating its smaller brother Golf GTE, #5 with 168 units, somewhat affected by the arrival of its newer relative.

5Volkswagen Golf GTE168

Looking at the YTD ranking, the BMW i3 returned to #4, exchanging positions with the Audi A3 e-Tron, while the Renault Zoe jumped two positions to #7, a funny fact regarding the french model, is that although it is four positions below the Bronze Medal won last year, its sales are actually up 26% YoY...Which says something about the current pace of the market as a whole.

The Volkswagen Passat GTE jumps another two positions to #10, while the Mercedes C350e also climbed two positions to #15.

There are two newcomers to the ranking, with the Audi R8 e-Tron registering its first six units and preparing the way to give the BMW i8 some serious competition in 2016, speaking of BMW, a new Bimmer plug-in model (The fifth!) has landed last month, the 330e registered its first 19 units and, as usual in every motorway-bruiser coming from BMW, it has the Premium sales leadership incorporated in its CPU, in this case meaning: "Beat the Mercedes C350e".

Looking into the manufacturers ranking, Volkswagen remains in the lead (20% share, down 1%), followed by the surprise Kia (14%), with BMW in Third with 13%, Mitsubishi #4 (10%, down 1%), and right behind we have Audi and Renault, with 9%.

Denmark November 2015

All Mighty Tesla - 2nd Chapter

Just when you thought BMW had secured last August a record that would last for years, Tesla scores in November a mammoth result of 525 units!

This amazing result, although comprehensible, considering the upcoming fiscal changes, nonetheless impresses by the sheer numbers in a small auto market like this one, placing the Californian on the Top 5 of the general ranking, and contributing decisively (81% of sales) to a new sales record in the Danish EV market, with 648 units, with the EV Share surging to 1,64%, almost doubling last year result of 0.88%.

As a side note, there were just 526 EV's registered in the whole of 2013...Expect Tesla to post another extraterrestrial result in December, and then...Early 2016 will be the hangover, a bit like the Netherlands in early 2014.

Regarding the manufacturers ranking, Tesla if far ahead everyone else, with 48% share (Up 9%), followed by BMW (18%, down 3%) and Nissan (16%, down 4% and waiting for the 30kWh version).

A final mention to Fuel Cell Vehicle sales, there was one new Toyota Mirai registered its third unit, making it 17 Fuel Cells in total sold this year.

Norway November 2015

e-Golf Leads Edition

Some 3.100 units were sold last month, twice as much as the same month last year, with the EV Share rising to 22.84%, a significant departure from the 14% recorded last year.

Here are the main news in the Top 5 Monthly ranking:

- The Volkswagen e-Golf is back with a vengeance, scoring its best result since last March, probably a sign that VW is now more willing to sell their pure electrics. The e-Golf was once again the Best Selling model in the general ranking;

- The Mitsu Outlander PHEV has beaten its norwegian sales record, with 497 units, being the Best Selling SUV in November. With plug-ins now having a more attractive legislation, expect this models to become a regular on the monthly podium;

- Third Placed BMW i3 continues to sell rather nicely, scoring 293 sales, allowing it to be #8 in the general ranking and #2 in their class, only behind the Toyota Yaris;

- As for the Tesla Model S, the 225 units sold are a relatively weak result, up only 11% YoY, either Tesla is letting sales "starve" in November to deliver a headlining result in December, or consumers are already waiting for the long desired Model X...

Looking at the YTD ranking, the BMW i3 recovered another position, replacing the VW Golf GTE in #5, making it the best position for the german hatch since March, but the good news for BMW didn't stopped there, as the X5 PHEV is now the Best Selling Luxury SUV, after surpassing the Porsche Cayenne Plug-In.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Volkswagen in comfortably ahead, with 37% share, followed by Tesla and Nissan, both with 12% share, but the all-electric manufacturer leads by 16 units (3.666 units vs 3.650).

China November 2015

Best Seller in November

Record Edition - Getting Hotter Every Month

Another amazing month in the Chinese EV Market, this time above 25.000 units, a new world record, with YTD sales now above the 150.000 units, also a global record...As result, the EV  Share rose again to 0.9%, an incredible result if you consider that last year ended at 0.25% and in 2013 it was just 0.09%!

Not only the numbers surged fourfold regarding the same month last year, but November marked the fourth consecutive record-breaking month!

This raises the question: "How high will this market go in December? 30.000? 35?"

The ranking is also changing rapidly, with several changes:

* The Best Seller in November was again the Kandi Panda EV, with 4.153 units, a slight drop from the previous 4.581 units, but still enough for a Third consecutive Best Seller of the Month trophy and to reach the runner-up position, changing places with the BAIC E-Series EV;

* The BYD Tang climbed another position, it is now #4, thanks to a record 4.049 units, the best monthly result ever achieved by a BYD model;

* Despite dropping to #4, the Zotye Cloud EV managed to score a new personal record last month, by registering 3.730 units;

As for the YTD leader and once 13 consecutive times Monthly Best Seller, BYD Qin, it was only #6 in November, immediately behind the BAIC E-Series EV.

BYD Tang: It's pedal to the metal - Time!
With sales this hot, there were also other models breaking records:

- JAC is profiting the work done on its facelifted i EV, having reached another monthly record: 1.452 units

- Also a new record for the Chery eQ, now with 923 sales;

- Chery's older electric sibling, the QQ EV, managed to reach a year best, by registering 710 units;

- But no other carmaker has been so impressive as BYD: Besides the aforementioned Tang SUV, an additional three BYD's scored monthly records, with the upmarket Denza finally posting a decent result, with 715 units, the taxi-friendly e5 scoring 379 sales and the T3 commercial van doing 65 registrations.

Volvo S60L Plug-In

There are two new models on the radar, the first 181 Volvo S60L Plug-In have found finally its way into the wild, a promising result for the swedish carmaker, especially considering that it has no direct comptitor in the market.

The second new EV isn't actually new, but thanks to some tweaks and a name change, we could count the Zotye TT EV as a new addition, especially considering that it sold 946 units last month, so it's no longer a compliance SUV, but with it, Zotye wants to have a competitor to the upcoming BYD Yuan mini-SUV. dephth

Finally, looking at the manufacturers ranking, BYD leads the way, with 34%, followed by #2 Kandi, with 14%, Zotye (13%) and BAIC (10%, down 1%) in Fourth.
