Norway February 2016

Plug-In Hybrids On The Rise Edition

The general performance of the Norwegian EV market continues to amaze, there were 3.555 EV's sold, up 65% YoY, with the EV Share growing yet again to over 27%, an interesting fact is that PHEV's continue to win share, now at 35% vs 25% in 2015.

Looking at the monthly models ranking, the VW e-Golf continues leading for the tenth eleventh consecutive month, followed by a surprising Mitsu Outlander PHEV (518 units, all-time record for a plug-in hybrid) and a recovering Leaf (453 units, up 83% YoY) in Third, with the VW Golf GTE ending in Fourth, with 358 units, a personal best.

Looking at the year to date ranking, the main news are the rise of the Outlander PHEV to #3 (And #4 overall) and Golf GTE to #5, the PHEV version represents 19% of sales of all sales of the general ranking leader VW Golf, if we count it together with the 100% electric version (55% of Golf sales), an amazing 74% of all Golf's sold this year in Norway had a plug...

A special mention for the good numbers of the Kia Soul EV, with 156 units, its best month ever. not counting imports.

Looking at EV's  performance in the February general ranking, besides the usual lead of the e-Golf, the Outlander PHEV ended in Second, followed by the Nissan Leaf in Third, making it a 100% Plug-In podium in the overall ranking.

BMW i3 (#11) and Audi A3 e-Tron (#14) also deserve a mention, with only the Toyota Yaris (#3, with 317 units) outselling the Bimmer hatch in the subcompact car class.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Volkswagen (30%, down 1%) continues in the lead, followed at a distance by Nissan (14%) and BMW (12%), which have switched positions regarding January.

Ireland February 2016

This is what an EV Concentration looks like in Ireland

The Good Son Edition

The highly seasonable Irish EV market is growing steadily, with YTD sales up 24%, thanks to an unusually high February, with 147 units, beating the previous sales record of 141 units, set in January 2015.

The main culprit for this result was once again Ireland's Adoptive EV, the Nissan Leaf, the 119 units registered last month represent a new all-time record for a single model in this market, improving on the 105 sales already registered by Nissan's hatch in January '15.

The Leaf seems poised to collect this year its Fifth Best Selling EV title, after those won in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015, a feat that would be unrivaled in the world.

As for the other models in the market, the numbers are rather small, with the Volvo XC90 PHEV receiving a warm welcome and Tesla already beating its own (Admittedly small) sales record in Irish lands.

China February 2016

The veteran BYD still has some aces up its sleeve

New Year Break

Although with incomplete data, we have nearly 9.000 EV's counted last month, a 77% increase over the same month last year, the largest holiday in China are the New Year festivities and it shows on the auto market, being usually the slowest sales month of the year, with EV's also following that rule, so from here on, it should be 5-digit sales all the way to December...

Looking at the models ranking, the BYD Tang SUV had a somewhat disappointing month in February, delivering only 2.098 units, its worst result in five months, something that might be explained by the unexpected good result of two other BYD models: The Qin went back to the 4-digit area (1.063 units), while the old boot e6 had a YoY three-fold jump to 1.105 units, proving once again that BYD is production constrained and can't put all their models at full speed at once.

The #2 BAIC E-Series, on the other hand.is proving to be rather consistent lately, selling for the third consecutive time at around 1.600 units (1.576 in February).

Looking at the Manufacturers ranking, BYD reigns supreme, with 42% share and four models in the Top 5, followed from a far by BAIC (15%) and Zotye (9%).

An interesting stat is the fact that PHEV's now have 41% of the plug-in market, a contrast with the 31% of last year, or the 10% of 2013.

Austria February 2016

The two times ('13 & '14) Austria Best Selling EV is back to the top

Renault Zoe Back At #1

226 new EV's were registered in Austria last month, with sales up an amazing 150% YoY, with 499 units sold this year, last year record of 2.091 sales is set to fall even before Autumn sets in, consequently the EV Share also in all-time highs, being for the first time above the 1% barrier (1.07%).

Looking at the models ranking, we have a surprise in First Place, with the Renault Zoe returning to the most desired place in the ranking after a long absence, followed by its posh arch-rival, the BMW i3 and relegating the title bearer Tesla Model S to Third Place.

Looking elsewhere, strong showings from the Mercedes B250e, with 24 units, its personal best, also from the Kia Soul EV (34 units) and the VW e-Golf(!), which had its best result in over a year.

In the manufacturers ranking, Renault is back at #1 (23% Share), with BMW in Second (15%) and Tesla in the last place of the podium, with 14% share.

France February 2016

Will the new Mehari replicate the success of the old one?

Chasin' For The Sun & Glory Edition

The French EV market continues on a high note, with almost 3.000 units sold, up 84% regarding the same month last year, with the EV Share rising to 1.80% share.

Looking at the monthly models ranking, it's business as usual in the leadership, with the Renault Zoe on top, up 58% YoY, followed by the Nissan Leaf in Second (286 units, best result in 11 months), while in Third Place the Renault Kangoo ZE is back to its usual self, with 256 units, followed by the BMW i3, with 126 units, and the Peugeot iOn, once again finishing in the three digit area.

In the YTD ranking, the Bolloré Blue Car lost two positions and dropped to #7, surpassed by the VW Golf GTE (#5) and the BMW i3 (#6), speaking of BMW, its presence in the ranking was greatly enhanced by the 225xe AT and 330e, two models that look poised for brilliant career in this market.

There was an important arrival this month, in the form of the Citröen e-Mehari, a cheap, half-wacky, half-cool, new convertible from Citröen, based on the Bolloré Blue Car Golia, both are set to find glory in the sun-friendly shores of the French Riviera, to evaluate the future success of the little loisir-mobile of PSA, it must at least outsell its lesser known Bolloré relative/separated at birth twin, while at the same transform itself in the best selling plug-in from PSA, something that has become a bit more difficult, given the recent success of the Pug iOn, anything more than that will be received with a smile from Carlos Tavares, head of PSA...

In the manufacturers ranking, Renault is stable in the lead (47% Share), followed by Nissan (11%) and ever-more-complete BMW (8%).

BMW i8 is going head-to-head with the best

BMW i8 Shines Edition

The Swiss EV market registered nearly 400 units last month, up 41% YoY, a good sign for the rest of the year, with the EV Share at 1.73%.

Looking at the models ranking, there weren't many changes, the Tesla Model S had a slow month, with only 58 deliveries, its worst result in a year, but still enough to keep leading the EV ranking, with 196 units, and continue to disturb their ICE competitors, outselling the Audi A6 (191 units this year) and  running close to the BMW 5-Series (274 sales) and Mercedes E-Class (237).

The Renault Zoe registered only 20 units, its worst result in 17 months, while the BMW i8 had the same amount of sales of the french hatch, these 20 deliveries was the second best month ever for the german sports car, only beaten by the 23 units of July '15, comparing the i8's 25 units sold this year to its closest rivals (Audi R8 - 1 unit in '16; Jaguar F-Type - 6; Mercedes AMG GT - 36), BMW's car from the future looks pretty well positioned, especially considering that the i8 is actually outselling the whole BMW 6-Series lineup (Coupé, Cabrio and 4-door Grand Coupé), that have 24 units registered YTD, this is another proof that others, other than Tesla, can go head-to-head with the regular ICE-competition.

Now about that pesky Porsche 911 (184 units)...Too much to ask, BMW?

In the manufacturers ranking, Tesla continues to lead, with 23% share, followed by #2 Volkswagen (21%) and #3 Audi (13%).
