Austria March 2016

Records Edition

A record 636 new EV's were registered in Austria last month, sales were up 113% YoY, with 1.240 units sold this year, last year record of 2.091 sales is set to fall around June(!), consequently the EV Share is also in all-time highs, at 1.58%.

Looking at the monthly models ranking, the previous monthly record (88 units, set by the Zoe in June '13) was beaten, not by just one, but by three models, the Nissan Leaf (100 units), Tesla Model S (127) and Renault Zoe (143) all beating the previous record, while at the same time being the first to enter the three digit area.

Tesla's result allowed it also to overcome in March the Mercedes E-Class (101), only losing out to the Audi A6 (168) and BMW 5-Series (153 units) for the Best Seller status. Another market where Tesla is overcoming the established ICE players...

Looking at the YTD chart, the Tesla Model S climbed to the Second position, dropping the BMW i3 to Third, while the Nissan Leaf jumped three positions to Fourth Place.

Strong showing from the VW e-Golf, which had its best result ever, with 68 registrations.

In the manufacturers ranking, Renault is still at #1 (21% Share), but has lost 2% share, with Tesla rising to #2 and Volkswagen only three units behind (196 vs 193).

Finland March 2016

Running Hot

A total of 390 EV's were sold in the first three months in Finland, up an amazing 162% regarding the same period last year, with the EV Share jumping to 1.18%, a significant departure from the 0.61% of last year.

Looking at the models ranking, the hottest seller is the Volvo XC90 T8 PHEV, with 111 units, at this rapid pace, the swedish SUV will beat the all-time yearly record of 146 units by May...

In the remaining positions in the ranking, two additional surprises, with the Nissan Leaf in the runner-up position, with 42 units, followed by the VW Passat GTE rookie, being warmly received by Finnish buyers.

Further down in the ranking, we see the good performance of the BMW X5 PHEV (#6, with 25 units) and of its Mercedes rival, the GLE500e (#10, 16 units), while on the other hand, the Volvo V60 Plug-in, Best Seller in 2013, is down to #15, with only three units, is the XC90 PHEV, stealing sales from its older brother?

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Volvo is First, with 29% share, followed by Volkswagen (15%) and Nissan (12%).

Looking at the BEV / PHEV breakdown, this traditionally PHEV-friendly market has seen this trend increase even more, with plug-in hybrids currently at 80%, vs 63% of last year.

Nissan Leaf Back To #1

EV Sales continue with a fast pace, with 188 registrations last month, a 111% increase YoY, placing the EV Share at 0.77%, with BEV's reversing in March the most recent supremacy of plug-in hybrids.

This change is visible in the ranking, with all-electric models climbing positions, most notably the Nissan Leaf, that jumped from Third to the First position, thanks to a record 48 units performance, this is the first time in eight months that the japanese hatch leads the YTD ranking, a curious fact on the Leaf, is that despite being the most common plug-in model in this market, 2011 marked the last time it won the Best Seller trophy...Will 2016 finally be the year that consecrates Nissan's hatch as Best-Selling EV?

Other all-electric vehicle to climb is the Renault Zoe, now in #9, but still far from the Fourth Position claimed last year, while the almost all-electric BMW i3 managed to climb one position to Fourth, with the mix between versions of the german hot-hatch is now favorable to the pure-electric version, something that didn't happened in previous years.

With springtime coming, the Renault Twizy reappeared in the ranking, ready to serve rentals in some tourist-friendly areas.

There is a newcomer, the VW Passat GTE landed with its first two registrations, looking to replicate the success that Mercedes is experiencing with its C350e in the market.

In the manufacturers ranking, the race is even closer than in the models, with Nissan and Mercedes tied in First Place, both with 92 units, while Mitsubishi is not that far, only 12 units behind, so this is currently one of the most entertaining markets to watch.

Plug-Ins Versus Regular Hybrids

PlModel March 2016

If we combine regular hybrid sales with plug-ins, the two Toyota Best Sellers, the Auris Hybrid (#1) and the smaller brother Yaris Hybrid (#2), continue to rule the ranking, but this month the Nissan Leaf managed to overcome the Mercedes C300 diesel hybrid, in the race for the Third Spot.

In Fifth we have another plug-in, the BMW i3, only one unit behind the Mercedes, so with exception of the top two (For now...), it seems that plug-ins are overcoming regular hybrids in Portugal too.

Ireland March 2016

This is what an EV Concentration looks like in Ireland

Leaf Edition

The seasonal Irish EV market is growing steadily, with YTD sales up 23%, with the EV market share reaching 0.44%, already on par with last year result of 0.47%.

The local Golden Standard for EV's, the Nissan Leaf, had an additional 80 units registered last month, increasing its market share to a mammoth 66%, considering the amazing pace it is experiencing this year, will the japanese hatch beat the yearly record of 405 units before the year hits the second half?

As for the other models in the market, the numbers are rather small, with two SUV's completing the podium, the Volvo XC90 PHEV struck a chord with local buyers and is Second with 41 units, while last year runner-up is now Third, with only 17 units.

Switzerland March 2016

If the S is shaking the Swiss market, then imagine what the X will do...

Tesla Shines Edition

The Swiss EV market registered nearly 600 units last month, up 12% YoY, with the EV Share up to 1.96%, almost on par with last year 1.98%.

Looking at the models ranking, the Tesla Model S showed a strong performance, with a near record 234 deliveries, cementing its lead the EV ranking, with 430 units and 30% share, but also disturbing their ICE competitors, outselling the Audi A6 (328 units this year) and Mercedes E-Class (335), while closing in to the leader BMW 5-Series (453 units).

Actually, March was a positive month for BEV's in general, with other all-electric models presenting good results: The Renault Zoe registered 52 units, its best result of the year, moving up one position to #4, the Nissan Leaf jumped six positions to #6, thanks to 49 deliveries, a personal best, and even the oldie Mitsubishi I-Miev rose four positions to #14, with the 16 sales registered last month being its best result in three years(!)...

In the manufacturers ranking, Tesla increased the lead, with 30% share, up 7%, followed by  Volkswagen and Audi, both tied with 13% share.

Chiffres Record Edition

The French EV market shattered its previous record (3.416 units, last June), with 4.247 units sold, up 129% regarding the same month last year, with the EV Share rising to 1.81% share.

Looking at the monthly models ranking, the big surprise are the 717 deliveries of the Nissan Leaf, a new personal record, while tied in Fouth Place, we have two models also breaking records: The BMW i3 and Tesla Model S both registered 143 units.

In the YTD ranking, the top positions remained the same, with the Bolloré Blue Car losing gas electrons and dropping an additional two positions and dropped to #9 (It was #5 in January), surpassed by the Volvo XV90 T8 PHEV (#7) and the Audi A3 e-Tron (#8).

As for the BMW, their models performances continue to impress, besides the aforementioned record numbers by the BMW i3, the X5 PHEV climbed one position to #10, the 225xe AT jumped four positions to #14, the 330e has made a new personal best (65 units), and even the six-digit look-at-me-i'm-a-XXII-Century-Sportscar BMW i8 has beaten its personal best, by delivering 17 units. BMW plug-ins are hot sellers around here...

Also selling like hot cakes is the Tesla Model S, jumping six positions to #11, thanks to record numbers, something that can't be said of the Mitsu Outlander PHEV, down four positions to #19 and far, far away from the #7 achieved last year...Feeling the heat from newer competition?

In the manufacturers ranking, Renault is stable in the lead (44% Share, down 3%), followed by Nissan (14%, up 3%), while BMW (9%, up 1%), benefits from the strong lineup performance, to confirm itself as the best selling true foreign-brand.

China March 2016 (Updated)

JAC's latest iteration of the i EV model

BYD Edition

The Chinese market had nearly 18.000 EV's new EV's zooming the streets last month, a 62% increase over the same month last year, with the EV market share firmly above 0.8%.

Looking at the models ranking, the leader BYD Tang SUV had a somewhat disappointing month in March, delivering only 3.111 units, it seems the leading EV-maker in China is dedicating some love to its lowest models in the food chain, with sales of the veteran e6 up five fold, to 2.016 units, while the Qin sedan saw the introduction of its BEV version, with 229 units, which added to the 1.143 deliveries of the PHEV version, saw its sales reach 1.372 units, its best result this year, but almost half of what it delivered twelve months ago (2.476 units).

The BAIC E-Series continues firm in Second Place, with the lowest place in the podium on the hands wheels of the JAC i EV.

As this is a Top 15 ranking, we can dig deeper and signal the good performance of the Tesla Model S, jumping to #8 last month, with the BYD e5 (#11) and the newly arrived Geely Emgrand / Dorsett EV (#12) also impressing.

Looking at the Manufacturers ranking, BYD is firmly at the driving position, but its share was rather surprisingly down 3%, to 39%, is the brand not growing fast enough?

Anyway, far from the leader, we have in Second Place BAIC (13%) and JAC (10%) in Third.
