Iceland May 2016

Nissan Leaf #1

The Icelandic EV market ended May with 234 new plug-ins, 58% above the same period last year, with last month alone being responsible for 83 units, an all-time record for a single month.

Looking at the models ranking, the Nissan Leaf still holds on to the leadership, running ahead of the PHEV pack (Golf GTE, Passat GTE, Outlander PHEV and Volvo XC90 T8), all chasing the Best Seller title.

The aforementioned picture makes Iceland another market where plug-in hybrids are on the rise (53% share vs 36% in 2015), something which isn't strange to the fact that there are many more to choose from and in different sizes.

Looking at the remaining models, the Tesla Model S is not fulfilling the expectations, currently it only has one unit registered, against the 7 in the same period of 2015, are people waiting for the Model X?

In the manufacturers ranking, Volkswagen is on the same pace as last year, leading (33%, up 1%) comfortably, followed by Nissan (20%, down 5%), the japanese automaker is suffering from the shift to PHEV's, something that the Third Placed Mitsubishi (14%, up 3%) can't really complain.

#1!!! Youhooo!!!....

Volt #1 Edition

May sales reached five digits, with over 11.000 units registered, aproximately the same amount as last year, with the EV share increasing another 0.01% to 0.69%.

In May, the Chevrolet Volt was again the Best Seller, delivering 1.901 units, but its sales were up only 17% YoY, a somewhat disappointing performance, but enough to recover the Year-to-date leadership, displacing the Tesla Model S to Second Place. at least until June, when the Sports-Sedan is expected to post another headline-grabbing performance...

Record performance for the Ford Fusion Energi, registering a surprising 1.453 units, cementing its Third Place and proving that generous promotions and discounts can do wonders...

The Tesla Model X continues to rise, up one position to #4, dropping the Nissan Leaf (Down 53% YoY) to the Fifth Position.

In the manufacturers ranking, Tesla (26%) holds on to the leadership, while Chevrolet (19%, up 1%) is keeping Ford (17%) at bay.

On a side note, 40 Toyota Mirai's and 4 Hyundai Tucson FCEV were registered, elevating the total amount of Fuel Cells to 195 units this year...

The Model S continues in Third, behind the Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5-Series sales champs, while the rest of the competition is behind the Californian.

An interesting stat is that the Model S is the only model growing in the ranking, while the other models are being slaughtered by the SUV-craze, with drops between 18% (Audi A6) and 40% (Cadillac CTS)...

The Model X has a tough job ahead, not only by the large number of competitors, but also because they are selling faster than their sedan relatives, in May the Model X was the Seventh Best Selling model of its class, but looking at the half full glass, it already outsold some highly regarded competition, like the LR Range Rover (1.044 units), LR Range Rover Sport (1.563 units) or even the Porsche Cayenne (1.293).

Spain May 2016

Caliente!

EV Sales continue hot in Spain, with 446 sales, the triple of April '15, with YTD sales shooting up a sensational 162% YoY, an impressive result, pulling the EV Share slightly up to a new record, 0.39% EV Share.

The Best Seller Of The Month was once again the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, with 68 units, earning its second monthly trophy this year., while at the same time assuring a more comfortable position in the YTD leadership, with 56 units of advance to the Runner-Up Nissan Leaf.

The Bronze Medal has a new bearer, with the Renault Zoe back to the podium, if only by six units.

Two EV's deserve a special mention, if the 64 units of the Smart Fortwo ED can be mostly attributed to the Car2Go car-sharing fleet, the 44 BMW i3's are a rather surprising performance, now that the improved range version is a couple of months away. Discounts and promotions can do wonders...

On the manufacturers ranking, Nissan stays continues in the leadership (22%, down 3%), but has lost 7% share in these last two months, now being chased by Mitsubishi (18%) and Renault (17%, up 1%).

Sweden May 2016

Sweden's got a new plug-in favorite
The Winner Takes It All... Edition

The Swedish EV market is officially on fire, with 1.211 units in April, up 67% YoY, making this the third consecutive month above the 1.000 units, a new record, with YTD sales up 72%, we are headed for some 16.000 units by year end, significantly above my prediction in the beggining of this year. How i love to be wrong this way...

As result of these brilliant performance, the EV Share surpassed for the first time the 3% barrier to  3.08%, an all-time record in the Swedish EV market.

Looking at the monthly models ranking, the VW Passat GTE, ensured its second third fourth leadership score, with 365 units (Again new Personal Best), giving no chance for the remaining competition and providing a whole new meaning to the old ABBA song portraited in this months title.

Now that we are on the ABBA songs subject, another theme from the band has occurred to me, looking at May's Second Placed Outlander PHEV, the "The King Has Lost His Crown" song illustrates accurately its performance, after a rough time in the beggining of the year, the japanese SUV, winner of the 2014 & 2015 Best Seller titles, is returning to its old form, but the 200-ish results that granted it supremacy in the past is no longer enough to steal the leadership from the VW Passat GTE...Will there be a clash of Titans?

Volvo had again a good sales month, placing the V60 Plug-in wagon in Third (157 units, best result in three years!) and the XC90 PHEV SUV in Fourth, with a personal best 101 units.

A telling tale of the current trend towards PHEV's, is the fact that the four best selling models are plug-in hybrids, something also visible in the BEV / PHEV breakdown, where 100% electric vehicles are down to 31% share versus 40% last year.

Looking at the YTD ranking, there were a number of changes:

- The Volvo V60 Plug-In climbed to the runner-up position, its highest standing since January;

- Last Year Best Seller, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, continued to recover, climbing one position to #4;

- The VW Golf GTE went back to #8, while the BMW X5 PHEV went up one position to #11;

- The current PHEV SUV trend has a new player, with the Mercedes GLC350e registering its first two units, hopefully it will sell a lot more than its larger sibling GLE500e, but with that model languishing in #24 with 8 units, that's not saying much...

2On the manufacturers ranking, Volkswagen (32, up 1%) is firm in the leadership, followed by Volvo (19%, up 1%) and BMW (13%, down 1%) in Third.

Final mention to the two registrations of the Hyundai ix35 FCEV, increasing the 2016 tally to 5 units. As for the Toyota Mirai, Swedes are still safe from crossing with the Terminator...

Plug-Ins Versus Regular Hybrids

If we combine May sales of regular hybrids with plug-ins, we see that the Toyota hybrids are becoming increasingly attainable by Plug-ins, if the Auris Hybrid still leads the way, the VW Passat GTE is closing in and looks to reach it soon, while the #3 Yaris Hybrid is looking also perfectly reachable by other Plug-ins in a couple of months.
