Austria July 2016 (Updated)

Hot Market Edition

Over 300 new EV's were registered in Austria last month, up 56% YoY, with 2.902 units sold this year, placing the EV Share at 1.41%.

Looking at the models ranking, the Renault Zoe was the Best Seller in July, consolidating its leadership, with 560 units, leaving the last year winner, the Tesla Model S, with the runner-up spot.

Looking at the rest of the competition, the top positions remain the same, while at the bottom, the Tesla Model X registers its first units, surely the first of many.

In the manufacturers ranking, Renault is the leader (22% Share), with the Second Placed Volkswagen (20%, up 1%) becoming increasingly menacing, while Tesla is firm in #3, with 14% share.

Colombia June 2016

Twizzies galore in Colombia

Debut Edition

We have a new market on EV Sales, Colombia, with 269 units sold in 2015 and 73 in the first half of this year, the market is regressing, but the numbers are still significant, with the EV share now at 0.05%.

After the first pioneering years having been divided between Mitsubishi (2011 & '12) and BYD (2013 & '14) efforts, the First Year of the Electric Car in Colombia (2015) was much due to the arrival of Renault and in particular of its Twizy city vehicle, which struck a chord in the market and registered 215 units that year, being responsible for 80% of all plug-in sales.

This year the numbers are less impressive, but the tiny Renault still holds 75% of the market, leaving some scrums to its Kangoo ZE relative (#2, with 9 units) and the other plug-in models.

Looking to the upcoming months, the Renault Zoe is expected to arrive soon, with the French brand expecting to succeed at least as much as the Twizy, while BYD has also hinted to bring some novelties here. BYD Qin EV300? It would be a welcome addition, no doubt about it.

Slovenia July 2016

"Move over, Zoe, it's my turn!" - Seems to say the orange painted bully

BMW Takes the Lead Edition

A total of 89 units were registered until now, which is a 35% improvement YoY, with the EV Share rising to 0.22%, a 0.04% improvement over the 0.18% of last year, a number that places Slovenia in the same ball park as Denmark (0.24%).

BMW took the lead from Renault this year, with this year Best Seller, the i3, registering 17 units, and its PHEV relatives helping out to consolidate the German brand lead to 37% share.

Renault lost share and now has only 24% of the market, with the Zoe relegated to Second Place, with 12 units.

Looking elsewhere, the Nissan Leaf is Third, with 10 units, while the Tesla Model S is #6 with 7 deliveries, an improvement over last year, but still behind the 2014 performance, when it was Slovenia's Best Selling EV, with 11 deliveries until July. Nevertheless, looking at the broader picture, 7 units are the same sales level as the Mercedes CLS, so despite the small numbers, Tesla is making a dent in regular ICE sales.

Two interesting facts in the lowest places of the ranking:

- The Citröen C-Zero has 3 registrations this year, its best result in four(!) years, which might indicate increased interest from the local importer;

- Most importantly, the Volkswagen Group has finally realised that Slovenia has potential for EV's and registered a couple of units for demonstration purposes, let's see how this comes along, it would be important to have the Best Selling EV manufacturer in Europe to join the bandwagon.

New Zealand July 2016

Best. Name Plate. Ever.

Outlander PHEV is New Zealand's Favorite Plug-in

With 37 plug-ins sold last month, sales were up a spectacular 147%, with the EV Share up to 0.3%.

Looking at the models ranking, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is once again the leading force, with July being the 14th consecutive month where the Japanese SUV leads both the monthly and YTD rankings.

Below Mitsubishi's SUV, the BMW i3 is proving to be quite popular, with no real competitors to its Silver medalist status, while the Third Placed Volvo XC90 PHEV is still too close from the rest of the pack to garantee the Bronze medal soon, especially considering the perfect landing of the Mercedes C350e, with 6 units, the best debut month for a plug-in since the Outlander PHEV arrived to these shores.

A telling tale of the growing importance of this market, is that besides Mercedes, Volkswagen has also landed in July, not with the expected Golf GTE, but with the all-electric e-Golf, a surprising move, considering PHEV's own 72% of the market.

Is VW's sporty hatch reserved for later? By the way, the Mercedes SUV's would also be successfull here, so...

Finland July 2016

BMW's Cool Kids:The  330e and 225xe Active Tourer

Cool Kids Edition

In July a total of 106 EV's were sold in Finland, up 74% YoY, with the EV Share still north of 1%.

Looking at the models ranking, while the Volvo XC90 T8 is untouchable in the leadership, with 187 units, the Second Place changed positions, with the VW Passat GTE (17 units in July, Best Seller of the Month) displacing the BMW X5 PHEV to Third, while in the Fourth position, we also had a change, with the Tesla Model S recovering the BEV leadership from the Nissan Leaf, which had a blank month, its first this year.

In the remaining positions, the BMW 330e climbed two positions to #6, while at the same time surpassed its Merc C350e nemesis.

But it wasn't the only BMW to climb in the ranking, the 225xe Act. Tourer jumped three positions to #10, making it four Bimmers in the Top 10.

With all these cool new PHEV models (Passat GTE, 330e, 225xe AT...) climbing in the ranking, the BEV/PHEV balance is becoming increasingly less...Balanced. While last year plug-in hybrids had 63% of the market, now they own 84%.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Volvo is First, with 25% share (Down 1%), followed by the increasingly menacing BMW (20%, up 4%), with Volkswagen (14%, up 1%) in Third but Mercedes (12%) is still in the race for the Bronze medal.

Romania July 2016

SUV-Land

Last July was the month best ever for plug-ins in Romania, with 13 units, with YTD sales at 60, this market is growing 50% YoY. True, the starting base was small, but growth is always good, right?

With the EV Share now at 0.14%, the needle is starting to move in the Romanian market.

An interesting trend in this market is the plug-in hybrid SUV rule, being responsible for two thirds of sales, after two years of Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV dominion (2014 & '15), SUV's have diversified in the Luxury end, with the BMW X5 PHEV now leading the ranking.

The best cars are only #4, with both the Mercedes C350e and BMW i3 collecting 5 units.

Another existing trend is the Premium brands prevalence, with only Mitsubishi and Renault representing the lower priced segments. Nissan is strangely absent.

Turkey July 2016

Antalya, Sun and a BMW i8. Could imagine worse vacations...

BMW i8 Best Seller

Finally we have enough information to make a (small) ranking of EV Sales in Turkey.

Basically, this is a story written only by BMW and Renault, with their plug-ins making the complete ranking.

An interesting fact is the success of the BMW i8 in Turkey, leading with 28 units registered this year, it might not sound much, especially in such a large market, but it's enough to lead not only the EV ranking, but also its sports car class, beating the 6-Series (All 3 bodies included) brethren and, most importantly, the Porsche 911, being one of the few markets where the Sports-car-golden-standard is outsold by the i8.

Interestingly, the German Sports car was also the 2015 Best Selling EV, with the much cheaper competition playing as also rans.

This year the Renault Zoe seems poised to take the BMW i3 from the runner-up position, so it will be interesting how the race between these two ends up.

Closing the ranking, we have the Renault Twizy, slowly making its way in the tourist-friendly cities.
