Chevrolet Bolt eating Volt sales?

August 2017 saw 16.639 units being registered, leaving the YTD EV Share at a record 1.1%, thanks to over 120.000 units registered in 2017, with sales up 32% YoY, still without the Model 3 bonus deliveries, the US market is headed for a record year, with December possibly surpassing the 250.000 units landmark.

Good news for the problem child Chevrolet Bolt, with a new record, with 2.107 units, with the first time it surpassed the 2.000 barrier coinciding with the first time it became available nationwide. On the other hand, the PHEV Volt registered only 1.445 units last month, with August marking the third straight month of falling sales. Is the Bolt beggining to hurt sales of its older brother?

In a stable ranking, the only notable changes were the climbs of the BMW 330e and VW e-Golf, to #12 and #13 respectively, while the Audi A3 e-Tron (129 units, worst result in over a year) dropped two places, to #14.

In the manufacturers ranking, the leader Tesla (22%) is looking by the rearview mirror to the Second Placed Chevrolet (21%), but next month Tesla should trounce it thanks to the usual last-month-of-quarter-peak, which is even said to be stronger than normal (Do i hear 10.000 deliveries in the US?).

The race for Third place is also close, with Ford (11%) resisting (For how long?) to Toyota, with the Japanese company having cut short the distance by 400 units, now standing at only 600. Will we see Toyota make the assault to Ford's fort in September?

Looking at the E-Segment/full-size vehicles, both the Mercedes E/CLS-Class and BMW 5-Series benefit from volume deliveries of the new generation to stay well above the other models, with the Tesla Model S back to Third Place.

It will be interesting to see if the upcoming Model 3 will cannibalize sufficient sales of the Model S, that forces it to drop it below this Top 5.

As for the Tesla Model X, its 1.575 deliveries were not enough to reach the Top 5 in its class (#5 was the Mercedes GLS, with 2.610 registrations), ending the month in Seventh Place, proving once again that the Tesla SUV should have been doing much better (Around 3.000 units/month) than its five year old brother Model S.

  1. About Model 3 again, it is reported a VIN above 170 already. The e) for this month could be around the 100 (hopefully)

I am very interested on the performance of the Leaf, Nissan is offering discounts of $10,000 in several states, in collaboration with energy utility companies. And 2014 CPO units are close to $7,000 too. Do those also count?

    1. The Model 3 will certainly appear on the September ranking, so stay tuned!

As for CPO units, they are not counted, only first time registrations show up.
