The two strongest contenders for the 2020 title?

Renault Zoe leads in hot market

The Spanish plug-in market continues on fire, hitting 2.912 units in February, up 96% YoY, this market second best result ever, after the record 3.265 units registered in the previous month of January, while looking at market share, last month reached 3%, keeping the 2020 PEV share at 3.3% (1.9% BEV), while BEVs remain the majority of sales (58%), aligned with last year result.

As for last month best sellers, the #1 Renault Zoe scored 317 registrations last month, a good result that allowed it to strengthen its leadership.

Good news also for the runner-up Peugeot 208 EV, that registered 227 units in February, allowing it to gain significant ground over its stablemate, the #3 Peugeot 3008 PHEV.

The Kia Niro PHEV was 3rd in February, with 133 registrations, the model best performance in 20 months, allowing it to jump to #5 in the YTD table.

This year we have a large number of new faces, first of all, this is proving to be a PSA-friendly market, with 6(!) new models from the Group in the Top 20, and the Peugeot 2008 EV is still in ramp up mode...

The VW Group has also fresh faces in the Top 20, with the Audi A3 PHEV rising from the dead straight into #6, while the Audi e-Tron is #20 and is also the leader in the full size category, and finally, the Seat e-Mii EV is starting its career in its domestic market in #11, having scored 74 units last month. If we add the VW e-Up! (77 units) and the Skoda Citigo EV (19) to the tally, we get 170 units, which would place it in #3, an impressive result for the triplets, considering this is not a city-car-friendly market (the Best Selling City Car in the overall market is the Fiat 500, which is only #27).

Just outside the Top 20, one model deserves a mention, with the Mini Cooper SE registering 56 units in February, so the hot hatch could join the Top 20 soon.

On the manufacturers ranking, there are big changes regarding the previous year, with Peugeot (15%) ahead, followed by Renault (12%), while Kia (7%) closes the podium, closely followed by Audi (6%) and Opel (5%).

Interestingly, PSA now owns 24% of the market, when last year it had less than 1%...

  2. If we add up the badge-engineered Peugeot 208 and Opel Corsa, they actually edged out the Zoe in February... As they should, considering the better charging speed, and otherwise similar specs.

  3. We see a divide between models that kept sales more or less in line with the previous month, and models that are clearly down. I guess we can assume that the latter are models that were stockpiled and then released as the new emission rules came into effect at the beginning of the year, resulting in a temporary spike... Though we don't know yet whether February sales represent "organic" demand, or some of these models are supply-constrained.
