UK September 2014 (2nd Update)

Record Edition

Thanks to an article on Inside EV's (Hat Tip), i can now post a more complete and accurate article regarding UK sales.

3.093 plug-ins were sold last month in the UK, not only it has broken its record by a mile (The previous record was around 1.000 units), but it is only the third market in Europe to reach such heights (The others were Norway and the Netherlands), as consequence, the EV Share jumped to 0,42%, well above the 0,16% recorded last year.

The Leaf sold 851 units last month, its best performance ever in any european market, while the Outlander PHEV made a dutch-like performance, selling in the four digits area.

Regarding the rest of the ranking, the BMW i3 had an expected warm welcome, with brits preferring the assurance of Rex to avoid range anxiety, Tesla is already #4, while the Renault Zoe is also selling well.

Behind these newcomers, in #6 we have the Vauxhall Ampera, which is experiencing something of a second youth, with three months to go, it is already outselling its 2013 score (260 units) and it's closing in on its personal best score (455 sales) achieved in 2012. Ironically, the Ampera is living its last moments before crossing the Hades of the Auto Industry...It will be missed, especially in this market.

Who is showing some wrinkles is the Prius Plug-In, it was #2 last year, but for the moment is only #7, with half the sales it had last year.

A promising start for the Nissan e-NV200, already in #8, it looks that Nissan feels at home in this market.

Finally, in #9 we have the expensive Volvo V60 Plug-In and in #10 the BMW i8, a car that has a waiting list that exceeds one year...

  1. I don't understand why GM and Ford don't "get it". See the Outlander PiHV? See how people want a CUV? See how it is doing well in countries where such a vehicle is offered?

Making more and more 4-door sedans is not the way to grow the plug-in market. Grow it with new variations - more CUVs with more family-oriented features. No government or family is going to choose a Volt-sized PiHV over an Outlander-sized CUV PiHV if both were presented. The larger vehicles would do great in the USA as a replacement or supplement to the Volt and Energi models from GM and Ford.
