Germany April 2015

Fighting for the "EV Meisterschaft"
#1 GTE Edition

The 1.719 EV's sold last month represent a 60% increase regarding the same month last year, meaning that EV Sales continue in good health in Germany, with the EV Share now at 0,59%, up from 0,44% last year.

Looking at the monthly ranking, for once there were no major surprises, with the Golf GTE (277 units, new Personal Best), repeating the Best Seller title of January, followed by the BMW i3 (219 units, personal best this year) and the Outlander PHEV.

The #4 Audi A3 e-Tron sold 192 units, its best result of the year, while there was a tie in #5, with the Renault Zoe and the Tesla Model S both selling 86 units.

Looking at the particular case of the american car, it is a good result within the plug-in niche, but looking at the larger picture of their ICE direct competitors, it is a disappointing number, as all of them outsold the S (Merc CLS - 451 units, Audi A7 - 560, BMW 6-series - 280, Panamera - 168). If in the future Tesla wants to be a player in the General Market, it needs to sell consistently above the 150 units/month. Will it get there eventually? Ladies and Gentlemen, please make yout bets.

The YTD ranking saw another leadership change, with the Golf GTE dethroning the BMW i3, while the Mitsu Outlander PHEV continues Third, with 11% Share and only 1% behind the top two.

The Audi A3 e-Tron climbed to #4 (Dropping the Leaf to #5), while the Tesla Model S also climbed one position, to #6.

An interesting trend in Germany is the rise of plug-in hybrids, last year there was only one representative in the Top 5 (Outlander PHEV, in #5), now they are the majority (Golf GTE, Outlander PHEV, Audi A3 e-Tron), this evolution is visible in the BEV / PHEV breakdown, as plug-in hybrids now have 44% Share vs 25% last year, which means that if Europe is leaning towards PHEV's, Germany is leading the way.

There are new models landing in the ranking, two from BMW (X5 and 2-Series PHEV) and one from Audi, the Q7 e-Tron, that registered 22 units in its debut month, a considerable amount, considering the price, staying only 11 units behind the already established Porsche Cayenne Plug-in.
