Records Galore Edition
September came and it was the Mother-of-all-Records, following on the recent upward sales trend, last month there were 16.474 units registered, a new all-time record, with YoY sales up an impressive 67%, with a September Market Share of 1.15%, the first time it breaks the 1% barrier, and the YTD also at a record at 0.83%, the US market is headed for a record year, will the YTD EV share reach 1% by year end? I wouldn't bet against it...
And that's still without the presumable hot sellers Chevrolet Bolt and Toyota Prius Prime hitting the market...
The Star Of The Month was undoubtedly Tesla and its two models, the S and the X. While the first secured an all-time record last month, with some 4.100 units, the second delivered some 2.950 units, its best month to date, which allowed it to reach the Third Place in the YTD ranking, making it two Teslas in the podium.

Looking below, we assist to a stable ranking, with a record performance by the Kia Soul EV, with 217 units, while the VW e-Golf is on a roll, doing another year best performance in September, with 529 units.
In the manufacturers ranking, Tesla (30%, up 2%) is comfortable in the leadership, while Chevrolet (18%) increased slightly its advantage over the Third Placed Ford (16%, down 1%).
On a side note, 69 Toyota Mirai's and 4 Hyundai Tucson FCEV were registered, surprising numbers for the Toyota, that placed the monthly and YTD share at 0.01%.

The Model S earned the silver medal last month, and it probably would have reached the leadership, if Mercedes hadn't combined the CLS & E-Class sales together, even so, only 724 units separated the all-electric sedan from the class leadership, something that would be unheard of and a sign of the changing tide.
Two additional signs that Times are Changin', is the distance between the Model S and the Third Placed BMW (2.501 units!), and that all conventional models here present lost sales YoY, and of them, only the Mercedes duo didn't dropped more than 15%, helped no doubt, by the freshness of the new Merc E-Class.And even then, the new model lost sales...

The Model X has a tougher job than the Model S, but with the production constraints now behind, in September, Tesla's SUV arrived in a best ever Third Place, if this is an indication of future delivery levels, then the Model X might well make an impact in this hot-selling class.
I'm wondering if, the Bolt is coming to dealerships for the last months of 2016, or first months of 2017, we will a sort of Osborne effect in Volt sales in the next 6 months.
ReplyDeleteGood point, i wonder about it too...
DeleteWhy don't you include the Japanese brands, Lexus, Acura, Infiniti in the "vs. the others" comparision? Would be interesting to see how they compare. Also would be interesting to see the % up or down for each model.
ReplyDeleteI compare the Teslas with what are more similar in concept and price (That's i compare it to the Lexus GS but not with the ES), but if sales of these two continue to rise, i will compare them with other competitors.
