Nissan is eating Toyota's lunch
Some 4.700 units were registered last month in the Japanese PEV market, down 26% YoY, mostly due to the effect that the Nissan Leaf 62 kWh version is doing to the Toyota Prius PHEV, that with only 435 units, was down a staggering 68%(!) YoY, the Second Generation Prius worst result ever. Do i hear alarm sounds at Toyota HQ?
Another proof of the Prius PHEV fall into the abyss, is the fact that the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV managed to outsell it last month, despite seeing its sales also drop (-23% YoY).
The 2019 PEV share started at 1.2% share, and could increase to some 1.5-2% share this year, thanks to the 62 kWh version of the Leaf.
Another measure of how low Toyota is now, is the fact that BMW is now the #3 brand, with 10% share.
Jose,
ReplyDelete2833 Nissan Leaf deliveries in Japan in January 2019 is a good start of the year.
The introduction of the Nissan Leaf e+ will have a strong impact on the annual total number of Nissan Leaf deliveries in Japan in 2019.
40,000 Nissan Leaf deliveries in Japan in 2019 is a possible outcome. And that's a very substantial increase compared to 2018.
The range of the Nissan Leaf e+ should really be more than enough for almost everybody in Japan. And there are more than 7,000 CHAdeMO chargers in Japan.
What the heck are all the other car manufacturers in Japan thinking? The Nissan Leaf is going to be much more popular in the coming years. Don't they see the writing on the wall?
Cheers
Yep, Nissan is having its domestic market all to itself, so i think the Leaf will have an amazing 2019 here.
DeleteNissan 2833 down from 3768, is that due to a dip because of change of model? Are these 2833 new Nissan Leaf e+ Models.
ReplyDeleteI am confused.
January saw the first new 62kWh Leafs being delivered, but the first full deliveries month will be February, so expect the next month to be big for the Nissan hatchback.
Delete2019 will be a tough year for Japan. The Leaf e+ demand might soar until the October 2019 fate: consumption tax increase, that will knock down consumption in Japan on everything.
ReplyDeleteIt is going to be interesting to compare volumes for Q4 2019 and full-year data.
It would seem Korea is going to pass Japan in volume. Just putting in a request for monthly Korea volumes...maybe that's not even possible.
ReplyDeleteKorean data is not easy to have. Will try to make a quarterly report on it.
DeleteMy answer to your question is: no, you do not hear alarm bells going off at Toyota.
ReplyDeleteWhich is a shame.
