Tesla Shines in BEV takeover

The Austrian plug-in sales are up 34% this year, to some 6.000 new Plug-ins, placing the PEV Share to record heights (3,4%).

In what was already a BEV-friendly market, with all-electric cars usually representing 60-70% of plugin sales, we are now witnessing a true BEV takeover, with fully electric vehicles representing 82% of this year sales (87% in June).

When governments play the incentives cards right, good things like these (Large BEV share and growth) happen.

On the other hand, PHEV sales are falling fast, with registrations down 12% this year (-34% in June), could this be the first relevant market to effectively make plugin hybrids redundant?

Tesla plays a major part in this surge, with the Tesla Model 3 in a different league regarding the remaining EV competition, having been #16 last month in the overall market, thanks to 346 deliveries in June, which was still a "meh" result for the sports sedan, after the 703 units of March. Still, with 1,454 units and 24% of the PEV market, no one is complaining.

The BMW i3 is in Second Place, while a slipping the Renault Zoe closes the podium.

With the other two Tesla nameplates also had a chance to shine in June, with the Model S delivering 80 units and the Model X, 43 units, which were their best results in over 2 years (we have to back to March '17, with the Model S scoring 110 units and the Model X, 60), allowing both nameplates to jump positions in the ranking, to #8 in the case of the Model S, and #14 in the case of the Model X.

Another model climbing positions is the Audi e-Tron, up 3 spots to #10, allowing an amazing 100% BEV Top 11 (Not even Norway has something like this), with the Jaguar i-Pace closing the pack, in #11.

The Best Selling PHEV is the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, in #12, so it seems that in this market, the Japanese SUV couldn't keep up the pace of the BEV armada. Interestingly, of the 7 PHEV models here, 5 are SUV/CUVs...

In the manufacturers ranking, Tesla is (way) ahead, with 29% share, followed by BMW (13%), while Volkswagen and Hyundai, both with 9% share, run for the last place in the podium.

Looking at the midsize vehicles general ranking, the Model 3 was up to the 2nd spot, with the leader VW Passat not that far away, so it is still in firing range of the Tesla Midsizer.

In other kind of markets, more PHEV-friendly, the upcoming PHEV version of the Passat could help it to keep the Model 3 at bay, but on this case...Not really.

So, one can say that it's up entirely to the Model 3 to win this category in Austria.

  1. Thank you for covering Austria. The high BEV share is indeed something special. And I can confirm from from my own experience that the number of Tesla vehicles is going up quickly on the roads.

I remember the days when I was barely able to spot 1 Tesla a day. Now seeing up to 5 per day is no exception. The transition happened within the past 1-2 years. Coupled with the high amount of electric scooters, it gives me a glimpse of the future :)

  2. Curious that almost all PHEV models did very poorly this month, even compared to the first five months of the year. (Also some BEV models -- but not all...) Anyone got an idea what could be the cause of that?

So far this year, Tesla leads with significant margin towards second place Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance but the duel between BMW Group and Kia-Hyundai might develop into an interesting subject.

From the posted data, Q22019 standings are:

    1st Tesla with 1765 units
    2nd Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance with 956 units
3rd BMW Group with 779 units
    4th Kia-Hyundai with 776 units
5th Volkswagen Group with 593 units

  5. If it's not too much effort, what's the highest monthly PEV share likely for Austria in 2019, and what was the highest PEV share for any month in 2018?

    2. Let's just say that the Best Selling month ever was March '19 (1.541 units), when in 2018, the Best Selling month (November), had just 1.041...

  6. How many Tesla-Killers were already announced and launched from the big guys? The i-Pace was one of them. And even though its produced in Austria this month Tesla sold 21 times more M3, 5 times more MS and almost 3 times more MX than Jaguar of its iPace. An impressive Tesla-Killer this car is

    1. Just one question, who ever said that the i-Pace was a Tesla killer? Can you send me the link? I would like to insult that person.

    2. haha, you should! Youtube is full of this, isn't it?

    3. Hard to pick just one! ;-) Googling for "I-Pace Tesla killer" yields page after page of such claims from "serious" publications. (Interspersed with many articles -- mostly from EV-centric publications -- debunking this nonsense...)

If you want to look past the "serious" journalists making fools of themselves, and wade into the cesspool of the Tesla death cult, Mark B. Spiegel is undoubtedly the king of ridiculous predictions; perpetually talking about Tesla Killers just around the corner for some six or seven years now -- including such gems as repeatedly claiming that interest in Model 3 will evaporate once reviews of the Bolt start coming in... If you have time to kill, https://twitter.com/TeslaHistorian regularly unearths some of his (and some other $TSLAQ short earthers') most hilarious fails.

Another endless fount of perpetually wrong claims of deadly competition being just around the corner this time really really for real, is Anton Wahlmann of Seeking Alpha "fame"... The video clip of him pretending to be thrown back by the e-tron's incredible 5.7 second 0-100 km/h acceleration is priceless :-)

    4. And I see another column, that says that both I-Pace and E-tron actually outsell MX on YTD basis. Thats pretty weird to say, that I-Pace and E-tron compete with any other Tesla models except MX.

But the truth is that on fast growing market(BEV) competition is actually very weak. Every new model just cut a little piece of ICE market and add it to BEV space.

I suppose that most of I-Pace and E-tron buyers would never consider buying Model X and vice versa...

    5. @y.v. - I have to disagree with you, the Model X is the most direct competitor to both the Jaguar i-Pace and Audi e-Tron, as they are all CUVs/SUVs, not the Model 3 or Model S, as these last two are sedans, so they fall in a different category.

The first (almost) direct competitor for the Model 3/S will be the Porsche Taycan, that will face the Model S, although the German model is more focused on the "Sports" side of the sports sedan category.

Despite being smaller than the Model X, the i-Pace is the only other "Sports SUV" in the EV market, so yes, it is an indirect competitor.

As for the Audi e-Tron, it is larger than the i-Pace, so it is the closest competitor to the Model X, size-wise. Of course, its poor efficiency makes it just half as good as the Model X, but for some, it is good enough, so yes, it should be considered a (failed) competitor to the Tesla.
