Mercedes E300e/de: climbing the ranking one step at a time...

Tesla shines but Zoe remains #1

The German PEV passenger car market continues on the right track in June, having registered 8,631 units, with BEVs (+117% YoY), compensating for the PHEV drop (-9%), and all-electrics now representing two thirds of plugin registrations, while the PEV Share was 2.7% in May, with BEVs alone hitting 1.8%, pushing the 2019 plugin share slightly up, to 2.6% (1.7% BEV).

After winning in February and March, the Tesla Model 3 won another monthly Best Seller award, thanks to 1,336 registrations.

The #2 Renault Zoe moved 1,021 units, an impressive performance for a model getting ready to receive significant changes. With the current one clocking regular 1.000/month performances, how high will the heavily revised Zoe go? 1,500? 2,000? Ladies and gents, please place your bets...

Another veteran shining in June was the #5 VW e-Golf, that registered 635 units, its best result since January, so it seems the German hatchback still has plenty of juice in it, even when the appealing VW ID.3 could be Osborning-it by now.

Usually, there's always much to talk about in the German PEV market, but this time it seems that everyone went on vacations early, as with a few exceptions, most players underperformed and haven't made big splashes.

The major exception was Tesla, thanks to the usual last-month-of-quarter peak, the whole lineup had an opportunity to shine, besides the aforementioned June win of the Model 3, with 1,336 units, that allowed it to come closer to the 2019 leader Renault Zoe (they are now separated by just 199 units), the Model S returned to the Top 20, in #19, thanks to 171 deliveries, the nameplate best result in a year, while the Model X delivered 98 units, its best result since March 2018.

Comparing their results against their German ICE competition, the Model 3 ran at the same pace of the Audi A5 (1,388 units in June) and BMW 4-Series (874), but it (still) was far from the leader Audi A4 (5,296), while the Tesla Model S performance was good too, almost selling at the same pace of the German Sports Sedans (Mercedes CLS - 192 units; Audi A7 - 270; Porsche Panamera - 286). Of course, these numbers pale when we see that the Audi A6 registered 4,612 units last month...So, still lots of room to grow, Tesla.

Finally, despite the good score of the Tesla Model X in June (98 units), the fact is that the nameplate is much below its potential, not only the fully-electric Audi e-Tron is #8, with 1,782 units, but the Tesla CUV trails well behind models like the Audi Q7 (400 units in June), Audi Q8 (507) or Porsche Cayenne (393), not to mention the BMW X5 (1,380)…

Back to the PEV ranking, the other model climbing positions in the Top 20 were the Mercedes E300e/de twins, that once again climbed the ranking ladder, they are now placed in #11, 253 units behind its full-size car arch-rival, the #10 BMW 530e. Will the Mercedes model be able to catch the Bimmer and become the category Best Seller?

Outside the Top 20, the #22 Jaguar i-Pace (56 units last month), has been unsuccessfully knocking on the door of the ranking for the past few months, and it wasn't in June that the British nameplate joined it, and to make things worse, a new landing, the Audi Q5 PHEV, should surpass it in a few months, as it registered 100 units last month, in what seems to be the start of a promising career for the Audi plugin (At least until the Tesla Model Y lands. And the Polestar 2. And the VW ID Crozz. But i digress…).

In the brands ranking, BMW (19%, down 1%) is the leader, with Tesla running for the 2nd spot, with 13% share (up 1%), with the #3 Renault (12%).

Outside the podium, we have Mitsubishi (9%, up 1%) recovering ground to the medalists, while Volkswagen and Hyundai, both with 7% share, are miles behind the best selling brands.

Interestingly, of the 6 best selling brands, only two are German. Mmmm...Makes you think, doesn't it?

First, I have the deepest respect for the Renault sales organization in Germany.

For the Tesla results, without showrooms, not much sales. Tesla did remove its "sales representatives" from its map, showing honestly that they don't have a sales organization in Germany to speak of.

Now they are clearly planning to build a service organization. But every service center should have at least a small room with a Model S and a Model X flanking a Model 3. Otherwise their mechanics will be interrupted too often by walk-in potential customers looking for some info.

I think there is great potential in Germany, for Tesla, and for I-Pace, e-tron, EQC, Polestar 2. Hopefully the IAA in Frankfurt can show the public what is in store for them.

    2. What makes you say there are no showrooms? According to https://tesla.com/findus , there are at least one or two Stores/Galleries in each of the largest German cities...

Frankly, I think the mediocre sales of Tesla in Germany are mostly because of nationalism: many people just not willing to accept the fact that some American upstart trounces all the cherished German premium brands...

    3. Give tesla time to the end of 2019 and look again

  2. I just noticed that most long-range BEVs, rather than being bold like the Zoe (and the Soul partially), got a different colour instead -- is that intentional? It's been like that for months in the German listing, though I only realised it now...

(Though frankly, I'm not sure how much value such a categorisation even has for BEVs: unlike PHEVs, they always run 100% on electricity, no matter their range...)

    1. BEVs in Bold have at least 300 kms range.

    2. I'm aware of that. My point is that in the German list, most of them (but not all) are not actually bold, but rather have a different colour... (Or maybe it's both a different colour *and* bold? Hard to tell for sure from the low-resolution screenshot... But definitely a different colour.)

  3. A significant portion of the German e-Golf registrations in June are certainly for VW's new "We Share" electric car sharing service that launched in Berlin in late June. It's supposed to grow to 1,500 units over the coming months; but I'm sure it launched with several hundred already, which were likely all registered in June...

(I guess you do not happen get information on what counties the registrations are for? Those are all registered in Weimar, so that it spells "WE" on the license plate...)

    1. Thanks for reminding that fact. Do not know where they were registered, sorry.

    2. 531 BEVs are registered in Thüringen (e.g.Weimar) in June - I bet most of them were e-Golfs, because YTD Thüringen has only 1262 BEVs.

  4. I think you mean the Polestar 3 as Model Y and Q5 competitor, not the Polestar 2. Polestar 2 is a Model 3 competitor.

The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance keeps achieving high volume registrations despite proposing old product and in the case of the Renault Zoe, a product devoid of DC charging capability. This and the high penetration achieved by both versions of the Smart vehicles shows that DC charging isn`t preventing them from a successful sales career. The noteworthy news is that Daimler managed to overtake Tesla, dislodging it from the 3rd place on the sales ranking, no doubt the weak fleet range from Tesla (2 against 4) contributes significantly to this. Last note for Kia-Hyundai that is loosing power on a growing market.

From the posted data, Q22019 standings are:

    1st Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance with 10919 units
2nd BMW Group with 9473 units
    3rd Daimler with 6257 units
    4th Tesla with 5891 units
5th Volkswagen Group with 5235 units

  6. Hi José,

Thank you so much for your work! I really enjoy your posts.

    Just one question:
Your numbers don't include cars registered by companies, right?

    Best regards
    Stefan

The numbers are for new cars getting a license plate. Combination of private, company cars, rental company cars, and other types of ownership.
If you are interested in numbers per category, look at this site:
