Editor's note: I'm back online and to start recovering for the lost time, i'm posting today the american markets data and the rest will follow in the coming days.

New month, new theme: After white, now the theme is black painted EV's

Volt(age) Edition

With the canadian Tesla sales now accounted, the EV market registered 167 new cars in May, an average month that kept the EV share at 0,12%, just 0,01% above last year share.

In the ranking, the Volt is now well ahead of the competition, followed by a surprisingly discrete Nissan Leaf and tied in third comes the Prius Plug-In and the Mitsubishi I-Miev.

Finally, in fifth there's Tesla's Model S, far from delivering here the kind of performance that it has in Uncle Sam's country.

Tesla's Model S is on the move

Models

In the models ranking the news is the rising of the Model S from #9 to #6, with the fifth place already around the corner, with just 161 units separating it from the Twizy.

The last two places of the ranking have new owners, in #9 the Chery QQ3 EV prepares itself to jump over the fossil Peugeot 106 Electrique and arrive at the #8 position. In tenth place, the Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In is waiting for the production to increase to start climbing even more positions on the ranking.

BYD has high hopes for its Qin model

By brands, the first two are firm in their positions, but Toyota's third place looks threatened by Mitsubishi, fueled by the Outlander success.

In the last places of the ranking, #9 Chery is preparing itself to jump another position and in #10 BYD is hoping that the new Qin model succeeds in order to catch its fellow countryman Chery in the ranking.

Dividing the plug-in sales by the conventional segments used for gas cars, it is possible to see how each segment leader stands in the global EV chart:

A (City Cars) - Mitsubishi I-Miev (#4)

     - This was how people imagined electric cars some years ago and it was still the #1 electric car in 2010,  but since then sales have stagnated;

B (Superminis) - JAC J3 EV (#11)

     - For now the chinese JAC J3 EV holds the title, but this year is facing serious competition from the Renault Zoe;

C (Compact) - Nissan Leaf (#1)

     - Thanks to a price reduction and detail improvements, this year it recovered the best seller title from the rival Chevy Volt;

D (Midsize) - Ford Fusion Energi (#33)

     - Ford should bet more on the Fusion, it doesn't have direct competition and it competes on one of the most popular segments in the market;

E/F (Full-size) - Tesla Model S (#6)

     - Tesla is so far ahead on the game that its direct competition are not plug-ins, but the premium best sellers like the BMW 5-Series, Merc E-Class or Porsche Panamera. Speaking of Porsche, it will be interesting to see the duel between the Model S and the Panamera Plug-in, will the german sports sedan plug-in version hurt sales of Tesla?

SUV - Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In (#10)

     - A rising star among EV's, with it Mitsubishi is looking to catch again the best selling EV title. For now it settles for the best selling EV SUV title;

MPV - Ford C-Max Energi (#15)

     - Last year it landed and right away took the #1 place for MPV plug-ins from Byd e6. But this year sales haven't took off as predicted…

LCV - Renault Kangoo ZE (#7)

     - Stable sales and weak competition enable for Renault an easy win here;

Sports Cars -  Tesla Roadster (#19)

     - A neglected segment of the market lead by the out of production Tesla Roadster. Interestingly, the high end of this market will be in the news, with three (!) new entries (Merc SLS ED, Porsche 918 and McLaren P1), all arriving with few months in between. But the one car that should inherit this title in the long term is the long awaited Cadillac ELR;

Pick-Up Trucks - Ford Ranger EV (#26)

     - Since Ford launched the Ranger EV way back in the last millennium (1998), only now did someone else tried again an electric Pick-up, so the Mitsubishi Minicab Miev Truck still has this dinosaur ahead in the chart.

China All Time Top 5

2013 Chery QQ3 EV

Looking at the chinese EV ranking is like stepping in a parallel universe taken from Fringe TV Series, as they are electric cars like in other markets but with strange names and faces.

Once you get used to it, another thing that hits you are the numbers, as they are unexpectedly big, after all this was the third largest plug-in market in 2012, and also the suspicion that these numbers could be even higher, because it's difficult to get numbers from the chinese EV market, for example both Chery and Zotye numbers could be in reality some 50% higher than the ones that have been posted here.

Opel Ampera and the windmills

The first two are far apart from the rest of the pack and should continue like that, at least until certain big boys arrive, like the Volvo V60 and Mitsu Outlander Plug-ins or the Tesla Model S, especially the last one should make an impact, given the success of Fisker here.

A rare sight: Two people in one Twizy

This is one city-driven ranking, with only the Opel Ampera bucking the trend of small city dwellers, with the tiniest of them all in #1, thanks to a great 2012 year, the Renault Twizy holds the top spot, at least until the german electric sales champions don't arrive and take over the whole thing.

Norway All Time Top 5

2013 Nissan Leaf

The Nissan Leaf is king here and by the looks of it, it won't give up on the best selling title anytime soon, beating sales records almost every month.

Norway has a long history of electric cars, so it's no surprise that two dinosaurs resist in this Top 5: the Think City is #3 and the homegrown Buddy EV is #4.

2013 Renault Kangoo ZE

The Renault Kangoo ZE is sold since 2011 and since then it's selling consistently, earning for itself the best selling title in 2011 and '12, only this year there's a new kid in town, it's called Zoe and in less than a year it's already in #3, it won't be long to reach #2 and this year it might even remove the all time best selling title from the Kangoo ZE.
