China October 2015 (Updated)

Hero Of The Month

Record Edition - How High is High?

Another amazing month in the Chinese EV Market, this time above 22.000 units, a new world best and close to the US and Europe September results...Combined! As result, the EV Share rose again to 0.79%, an incredible result if you consider that last year ended at 0.25% and in 2013 it was just 0.09%!

This raises the question: "How high will this market go in December? 30.000? 35?"

Not only the numbers surged threefold regarding the same month last year, but the YTD total is now at over 121.000 units, 190% above last year result by this time.

The ranking itself is changing rapidly, with several changes in the ranking:

* The Best Seller of the Month was again the Kandi Panda EV, with an incredible 4.581 units, not only the best result ever in China for a single model, but also dangerously close to the record 4.957 sales made by the Mitsu Outlander PHEV in December '13 in Holland...Time for a new record?

* Anyway, this allowed the Kandi model to have the #2 BAIC E-Series EV in plain sight, so it wouldn't be surprising to see it reach Second in November;

And the rest of the Monthly Top 5 has more surprises: The recently slow selling Zotye managed to get one model among the Top 5 best sellers, with the Z100 Cloud EV in #4 (2.340 units) a new sales record, climbing one position in the YTD ranking, with the Z100 Cloud EV reaching #4.

As for the YTD leader and once 13 consecutive times Monthly Best Seller, BYD Qin, it garnered a discreet #5 in October, having just registered 2.209 units...

Tang: Always pressing the accelerator forward.

There were other models also breaking records:

- The BYD Tang recorded a new pb, with 3.212 units, allowing to jump three positions to #5;

- JAC is profiting the work done on its facelifted i EV, having reached a record 1.401 units, helping to climb two positions to #7

- New record for the Chery eQ, with 670 sales, up one position to #11;

- The GAC Trumpchi GA5 REV registered a record 180 units;

- Donfeng managed to increase the sales of its small E30L to 150 units;

- New year best for the BAIC E-Series, with 2.344 units.

Changan Eado EV
There are two new models on the radar, the Changan Eado EV a very promising sedan that sold 1.170 units last month, joining already the best sellers ranking at #15.

The second new EV is the JMC E100, a four seat microcar with bargain-basement price and an electric motor with an output of...ten (10) horsepower. Another headache for Kandi, Zotye, Chery and the like...

Speaking of microcars/City cars, which are the best sellers by segment/class?

Microcar/City cars - Kandi Panda EV;

Subcompacts - BAIC E-Series EV;

Compact cars - BYD Qin;

Midsize/full size cars - Tesla Model S;

MPV - BYD e6;

SUV - BYD Tang.

Finally, looking at the manufacturers ranking, BYD is in the lead, but has lost 1% share (It now has 36%), followed by #2 Kandi, with 14% (Up 1%), Zotye (13%) and BAIC (11%) in Fourth.

The EV Revolution Will Not Be Televised is slowly going on in the West, but IT IS speeding up in China, with local manufacturers taking all the profit from it and foreign OEM's just waiting in the sideline...

  1. The numbers in this table sum to 22506, not 24310. Impressive number nonetheless.

    1. These are just the Top 15 Best Sellers in China, the total amount of models i have in China are around 40, and i expect that a few more are still off EVS radar, so the real numbers might even be larger than these.

  2. How does the BEV vs PHEV stand in China?

  3. Micro-cars like Kandi and Zotye are designed for government subsidy, and will disappear when government subsidy ended.
    For example, the price in CNY of kandi is 150,000, government subsidy is 90,000, final cost is 60,000, the subsidy ratio is 60%.
    In contrast, the price of BYD Tang is 280,000, government subsidy is 60,000, final cost is 220,000, subsidy ratio is 21%.
    That means, the money to buy one Tang can buy almost 4 kandi, even though, there are few individual customers buy these micro-cars, most of them are sold to timeshare rentals company.

    1. Yes, i see what you mean, but nevertheless, it's better than nothing right?

      Besides, those microcars might give carmakers a basis to go upmarket, i know from a reliable source that Kandi is on that path, with the K17 Cyclone (Subcompact) and K30 sedan.

  4. That's correct and Kandi has already announced this year production of K10 Mini and K11 Panda will significantly scale down to allow more advanced models to be released (K17, K12, K13).

    Here is a review of the K17 (in Chinese) used in Micro-Public Transport program: http://info.xcar.com.cn/201511/news_1881343_1.html?viewtype=all

    The dashboard software is developed and provided by Alibaba Aliyun Cloud OS.

  5. BYD sold 139 e5s and 1 T3 in October. Can't link you to the data as it's on bloomberg although it is from China automotive Info Net as the source. Also the 139 e5s and t3 when added to your figures corroborates with BYD's latest press release: http://www.byd.com/news/news-313.html
