Toyota loses ground
In July, some 3,700 units were registered in the Japanese PEV market, down 10% YoY, while the PEV share dropped slightly, to 1.0% share, with the Prius PHEV being the main culprit for the fall, as the Toyota hatchback has its worst result in the last 15 months, by registering just 930 units, down 56% YoY.
Is the leader stealing sales to the Toyota PHEV?
The Nissan Leaf, on the other hand, saw the sales of the new generation jump 75% YoY in July, to 2,040 units, while the YTD sales are up 99%, placing the Nissan BEV on track to beat last year record of 26,734 units, set by the Toyota Prius PHEV.
As for the third significant plug-in model in Japan, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, sales are stable this year (-1% YoY), so far unharmed by the Leaf success (Well, they appeal to different demographics, don't they?), but neverthless, the Mitsubishi SUV has known better days, as sales are down 27% regarding 2016.
Toyota will have to revise its electric future!
ReplyDeleteJapan continues with most of its makers, not betting for EV's but the Leaf is a success.
ReplyDeleteIs Norway EV stock higher than Japan's?
ReplyDeleteEV stock?
DeleteAs far as I can tell Norway has 240,000 EVs and Japan about 238,000. Incredible, really. Japan, you are better than this.
DeleteAbout the same
DeleteIn Japan there is Toyota.
DeleteIn Norway there is no such thing as Toyota.
That's a very big difference.
Jose,
ReplyDeleteThe Nissan Leaf will be more popular in Japan in 2019 when the 60 kWh battery pack will be introduced. The sales numbers of the Nissan Leaf will increase in Japan in 2019. As more people in Japan will consider the Nissan Leaf to be good enough as their only car for daily use. The range of the 60 kWh Nissan Leaf should be sufficient to almost all people in Japan. And there is hardly any competition for the Nissan Leaf in Japan, at least not as much as in Europe and in the US.
What do you think?
Yes, i guess the 60 kWh version in Japan will push sales even further, making the Leaf a regular presence in the country's mainstream Top 30 (20?).
DeleteWe see Honda Clarity PHEV 174 units on the 4th position.
