Belgium December 2017

Record Month in SUV-land

Another record month in December, with 1.409 registrations, doubling the result of December '16, placing the full year PEV Share at 2.6%, almost a full 1% more than the 1.7% registered in 2016.

Considering that the market gained also 1% from 2015 to 2016, will it mean a year from now we will see the Belgian PEV market reach 3.6%?

Growth is good, what it is not so positive is that this is a PHEV-heavy market, with PHEV's owning 82% of all PEV registrations, up from 78% in 2016.

Let's hope the incentive changes that happened now, allow a more balanced weight between BEVs and PHEVs.

Belgians continue fancying premium plug-in hybrid SUV's, with the podium positions occupied by three models from that category, but the December Best Seller was a car, with the Porsche Panamera PHEV collecting 140 registrations.

The 2017 Best Seller was the Mercedes GLC350e, a first for Mercedes, followed by the BMW X5 PHEV, leaving the 2016 winner, the Volvo XC90 PHEV, only with the Third Spot.

In Fourth we had the 2017 Rookie of the Year, the BMW 530e, which coincidentally was also the Best Selling PEV car in Belgium, while the Tesla Model S was yet again the Best Selling BEV.

Speaking of the Tesla Sport-Sedan, the poster child for EVs scored 90 deliveries, its best performance in 9 months, while the Renault Zoe had its best month in Belgium ever since it landed, way back in 2013, with 85 registrations (It seems Renault finally opened the gates to the Zoe at the Flins factory), and another recent model is on the rise, with the Volvo XC60 PHEV jumping to #17, thanks to a personal best of 96 deliveries. Will we see the Swedish SUV run for the podium in 2018?

Other Volvo's climbing positions are the S/V90 PHEV flagship twins, climbing to #21, thanks to a record 54 deliveries.

In the manufacturers ranking, BMW renewed the 2016 trophy, with 33% share (Down 1%), followed by Mercedes (19%, down 1%) as the runner-up, benefitting from the popularity of its midsize GLC SUV, all while the rising Volvo ended in Third Place, with 11% share.

Looking at the LCV category, sales were down 8%, to 132 units, with the Nissan e-NV200 van managing to outsell the Renault Kangoo ZE, by 52 to 48. As for Fuel Cells, numbers dropped regarding 2016, from 14 to 11 units, with the Toyota Mirai winning the Hyundai FCEV by 8 to 3.
