Tesla Model S wins Models and BMW Manufacturers, in hot market
Luxembourg took some time to catch the PEV Train, but now is quickly reaching the leading group, in 2017 sales surged 224%, to 992 new plug-ins, with the PEV Share jumping from 0.6% to 1.9%, being the fifth highest share among EU members. If growth continues this fast, it won't be long until the Grand Duchy becomes #2 among the EU countries, share-wise.
The 2016 Best Seller Tesla Model S renewed the title in 2017, with a personal best of 88 units, but with only 9% share, keeping the American Sports Sedan from breaking the all time sales record, set by the Renault Zoe in 2014, with 97 registrations.
Speaking of the French hatchback, it was Second Placed in 2017, with 75 units, while the Mercedes GLC350e surged to Third Place (And Best Selling PHEV), in its first full year on the market, thanks to 73 registrations, the best record ever for a plug-in hybrid in this market.
This performance underlines the rise of PHEVs, that are growing faster than BEVs (+275% vs +160%), with this technology already owning 64% of all the PEV sales. Now let's hope they don't fall in the same PHEV addiction that the Netherlands had in the past and Belgium is experiencing now...
Looking elsewhere, BMW has a strong presence, with five models in the top 12 positions, with the best selling of them being the 330e (#4).
It is a bit surprising the low position of the BMW i3 (#9), the Third most popular PEV in this country (Allocation problems?), while on the rookie side, the BMW 530e was the Best Seller, #12 with 38 units, while the recently introduced Smart Fortwo ED is also proving to be popular (#14, with 27 units), will it be a podium candidate in 2018?.
Looking at the manufacturers ranking, BMW won the 2017 edition (27%), followed by Tesla (15%) and Volkswagen (13%), with the Wolfsburg maker surpassing Mercedes in the last months of the year, thus repeating the 2016 podium standings (BMW-Tesla-VW).
