Global EV Sales - December 2025 / Full Year of 2025

Record month, with 2.1 plugin vehicles registered in December

- Looking at the total 2025 sales, over 20 million units were sold, translating into a 17% BEV share, 26% if we add PHEVs to the tally;

- With China slowing down (+13% in '25), and North America (-6% YoY) with receding sales, it was up to Europe (+30%) and especially the Rest of the World (51+% YoY!) to pull sales upwards, in 2025;

- In that category, several significant, but less media-friendly, EV markets experienced a surge in sales, last year: India EV Sales jumped 92% in 2025, like Indonesia (+128%), Vietnam (+97%), Turkey (+90%), and Mexico (+154%). Just because your home market is down, it doesn't mean that all markets are down...

20 Best Selling EV Models in the World in 2025

- Tesla Makes an (Increasingly Rare) #1 + #2 Win in December;

- 2025 podium is the same as in previous years (#1 Tesla Model Y; #2 BYD Song; #3 Tesla Model 3);

- The best selling Pick Up trucks globally are the #1 Ford F-150 Lightning, #2 BYD Shark 06 and #3 Tesla Cybertruck.

Global EV Sales, December 2025 (3/3) - Top OEMs

* Looking just at BEVs, the big news is that Tesla has lost its crown!

- After several years at the top, in 2025 BYD (17% share) has beaten Tesla (12%);

- Geely repeated the 3rd spot of 2024, but has increased its share from 8% in '24, to 10% in '25, so this year it should be ready to also surpass Tesla and win the silver medal.

* Adding PHEVs to the tally, BYD repeats the 2024 title, but loses share (25% share in '24 vs 22% in '25);

- Rising Geely (11%) surpassed Tesla and was the new silver medalist in 2025, relegating a sliding Tesla (11% share in '24 vs 8% in '25) to Third.

- If BYD continues to lose share this year, rising Geely might be able to run for #1 in 2027...

- ...And Tesla might even finish this year in 5th, as both #4 VW Group and #5 SAIC are seeing their sales progress significantly, while the US make...is not.

* So, after the first few years of the EV market having as Best Selling OEMs the Renault-Nissan Alliance and General Motors, we saw a second phase of the market, starting in 2015, with BYD and Tesla regularly taking over the top spots.

- Now we are entering a 3rd phase, where Tesla is being replaced by Geely as the main rival of BYD;

- It could even be the case that 2026 ends with a 100% Chinese podium(!), if SAIC manages to beat both the VW Group and Tesla in the race for the 3rd position.
