April EV Sales Report III - Ireland, Canada, Switzerland

Canada February 2020 (Draft)
Tesla Model 3 turf
In the last few months, Canada has been absent from EV Sales, because the usual sources haven't published their reports. As such, this is a draft ranking, based in secondary sources and with some estimates, if someone has reliable data, please get in contact.
February registered some 3.400 plugins in Canada, up 23% YoY, aligned with the YTD count (+24% YoY), with last month plugin share reaching 2.5%, placing the 2020 PEV share at 2.7%, slightly above the 2.6% of 2019.
February registered some 3.400 plugins in Canada, up 23% YoY, aligned with the YTD count (+24% YoY), with last month plugin share reaching 2.5%, placing the 2020 PEV share at 2.7%, slightly above the 2.6% of 2019.
The Tesla Model 3 is the main sales drive in Canada, with the midsizer being responsible for roughly one quarter of all plugin registrations this year, and should continue leading the table at least until H2 2020, when a certain Model Y crosses the border...
The Californian maker has another nameplate in this Top 10, with the Model X in #6, but it is not the only brand with two models in the Top 10, as Hyundai also managed to place two models, with the #5 Kona EV and #7 Ioniq PHEV.
The Toyota Prius Prime was the Silver medalist last year, but this year it was kicked out of the podium, but the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV performed even worse, with the Japanese SUV winning the Bronze medal last year, and now it's only #10, having seen its sales drop to less than half. Is Mitsubishi prioritizing Europe for its Outlander PHEV deliveries?
A mention to the good performance of the VW e-Golf, now in #9, which could (and should) make Volkswagen wonder if the ID.3 could be a good addition to its Canadian lineup...
Regarding the manufacturers podium, Tesla (33%) is head and shoulders above the competition, with the rising Hyundai (13%) and Chevrolet (11%) in the remaining medal places, ahead of Nissan (8%) and Toyota (7%).

Markets Roundup - December 2019
I. Big Markets
Let's see how the Big EV Markets fared in 2019:
China
* BAIC EU-Series #1 - First time winner, but in 2020 it will have more competition;
* 1.2 million units - What a roller coaster, great first half of the year, then after the incentives change, a stark drop, with December ending with a sign of hope. And the Market Share reached 5.5%, above the share of the USA or Europe.
USA
* Tesla Model 3 #1 - Second win for the Californian, but in 2020 the Model Y lands, so...Enjoy it while you can, Model 3;
* 325.000 sales - Poor second half of the year, leading to slight drop, to 2.0% share.
Europe
* Tesla Model 2 #1 - First title for Tesla in Europe, to be repeated in 2020, but in 2021, things should become more interesting;
* 564.000 units - Sales increased the pace, with the PEV share reaching 3.6%, with plug-in hybrids losing importance, with BEV's now owning 64% of the market.
Japan
* Nissan Leaf #1 - Despite lack of real competition, the Nissan hatch did its part and won another title;
* 44.000 units - What can i say, sales have (again) dropped and the PEV share has dropped to 0.8%. Disappointing.
Canada
* Tesla Model 3 #1 - Canada's darling. At least until the Model y lands...
* 51.000 units - Strong, steady growth, with the market share ending at a record 2.6%.
South Korea
* Hyundai Kona EV #1 - A new year, a new win for the Crossover, scoring another all-time record (14.000 units). The Kona EV is the leader in Korea.
* 34.000 sales - A hot market, with doubling sales, and the market share now reaching 1.9%. A mention to the Hyundai Nexo Fuel Cell, that registered 4,000 units, leading to a 0.2% share, being the only place FCEVs started to become common(ish).
III. Other markets
A few words on smaller markets:
New Zealand - Tesla Model 3 lands and immediately becomes the Best Seller. PEV share jumped to 2.6% (up from 1.4% in 2018);
Israel - Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV was #1, market has beaten the 2018 records and reached 1.5% share. Too many PHEVs, though;
Australia - Doubling sales (9,000 units), with the Tesla Model 3 stealing the show and winning the Best Seller title. The market share needle is finally starting to move (0.9% PEV share);
Brazil - Volvo XC60 PHEV was the Best Seller, in a year that things finally started to move upwards (1,500 units), although share wise, we are still rock bottom (0.1%);
Mexico - Tesla Model 3 steals the show and pulls the market up (1,400 units in total), but share wise, it is still in its infancy (0.1%);
Colombia - Fast growth is moving up the needle (0.5% share), with the BMW i3 becoming the 2019 Best Seller;
South Africa - Jaguar and Land Rover came into play and together with BMW, they are the only ones pulling the market up, allowing it to reach record heights (300 units...);
Taiwan - Tesla Model 3 disrupts the market, making it grow 5-fold, while the plugin share finally starts to move (0.4% share);
Hong Kong - Although still far from the 2017 record (4,000 units), the 2019 result (2,000 units) allowed it to come alive again and reach some 5% share;
Singapore - A record 1,400 units allowed this market to reach 1.9%, with the 2019 Best Seller being the Hyundai Kona EV;
Hong Kong - Although still far from the 2017 record (4,000 units), the 2019 result (2,000 units) allowed it to come alive again and reach some 5% share;
Singapore - A record 1,400 units allowed this market to reach 1.9%, with the 2019 Best Seller being the Hyundai Kona EV;

Canada September 2019
Waiting for the Model Y?
September registered some 4.700 plugins in Canada, down 11% YoY, but the YTD count is still positive (+22%), besides, because the mainstream market is in the red (-4%), the month plugin share reached 2.8%, pulling the 2019 PEV share to 2.7%, above the 2.2% of 2019.
Despite not enjoying the hegemony that is having south of the border, the Model 3 is the main sales drive in Canada, with the midsizer being responsible for roughly one third of all plugin registrations this year, and because the Tesla nameplate sales trend is reaching maturity, one can't expect significant growth rates until H2 2020, when a certain Model Y (hopefully) lands...
The other two Tesla nameplates are in different trajectories, while the Model X is watching its deliveries increase (last month it had its best result in the last 18 months), growing by 10%, the Model S flagship continues to slide, having dropped 12% YoY, and falling from the Top 10 positions, to the benefit of the Honda Clarity PHEV.
The Toyota Prius Prime is the Silver medalist, while the Chevrolet Bolt changed positions with its Volt sibling, with the first benefitting from the slowing sales of the latter, now out of production.
A mention to the good performance of the Kia Niro PHEV, less than 100 units from the Top 10, while the veteran VW e-Golf continues on a strong pace, now in #11, just 23 units from a Top 10 spot.
Regarding the manufacturers podium, Tesla (38%) is head and shoulders above the competition, Chevrolet (12%) is in Second Place, while Toyota (10%) Mitsubishi (9%) are running for the Third spot.

Looking at the midsize vehicles general ranking, the Model 3 is finally in the lead, with the previous leader Toyota Camry some 2.000 units behind, so the Tesla midsizer has a sizeable margin to manage its lead.
Looking into the rest of the competition, the only model to have a significant share of electrification is the Ford Fusion, where 18% of its sales come from the PHEV version.

Looking at the Premium full-size cars general ranking, we can see the Tesla Model S steady in the 3rd position, with its registrations dropping 12%, a small feat in the current SUV-fever context, as with the exception of the leaders Mercedes E/CLS-class (+3% YoY), all other ICE models are witnessing falling sales, with losses ranging from the 27% of the Panamera, to the 34% of the BMW 5-Series.
Interestingly, the only other model to have a significant share of electrification is the Porsche Panamera, with 19% of its sales coming from its PHEV versions.
As for the Model X, it continues far from the class best sellers (for reference, the BMW X5 has 5.230 registrations), being #9 this year, but nevertheless, it has grown 10% YoY, so the Tesla's Sports-CUV is on the right path.

Canada June 2019
Tesla Model 3 Superstar
June registered some 5.900 plugins in Canada, down 6% YoY, the first drop in over four years, but fear not, as June 2018 was a record month, and the point where most of the Tesla Model 3 backlog was delivered, besides, because the mainstream market is sinking deeper into recession (-10% YoY!), last month plugin share reached a record 3.2%, pulling the 2019 PEV share to 2.5%, above the 2.2% of 2019.
Despite not enjoying the hegemony that is having south of the border, the Model 3 is the main sales drive in Canada, with the midsizer being responsible for roughly one third of all plugin registrations this year.
The other two Tesla nameplates continue in the Top 10, while the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is the new favorite non-Tesla plugin, now that the Chevrolet Volt has entered in sunset-mode.
The Toyota Prius Prime is now the Bronze medalist, having seen its sales grow 14% YoY, benefitting from slowing sales of the Chevy Volt and the fall from grace of the Nissan Leaf, with the Japanese BEV seeing its sales fall 39%.
With the soon-to-be-departed Chevrolet Volt slowing down registrations, one would think that the GM brand would compensate this drop by increasing the Bolt deliveries, but...It's not really happening, in fact the fully-electric hatchback is seeing its sales drop 7% regarding the same period of 2018…
A mention to the landing of the Audi e-Tron last month, with 113 units, it will be interesting to see how Audi's first BEV will be received in Canada, matching the Tesla Model X performances should be hard to reach, but you never know...
Regarding the manufacturers podium, Tesla (38%) is head and shoulders above the competition, while Chevrolet (13%) is in Second Place, and Mitsubishi (10%) in Third Place, but with Toyota (9%) dangesrously close.

Looking at the midsize vehicles general ranking, the Model 3 was up to the 2nd spot, with the leader Toyota Camry some 1.000 units ahead, so not that far from being catched.
Looking into the rest of 2019, expect the Model 3 to continue running for the mainstream midsize category leadership, benefitting from the recent federal incentives to win an edge over its ICE competitors.

As for the ugly duckling of the Tesla range, the Model X, it continues far from the class best sellers (for reference, the BMW X5 has 3.391 registrations this year, three times as much as the Tesla), but nevertheless, it has seen its sales grow 17% YoY, so Tesla's Sports-CUV is on the right path.
