Tesla SC outsells CCS and Chademo in 2017

As one can see, all fast-charging standards had a great 2017, with Chademo leading, thanks to the surging Japanese sales of the Prius PHEV and Korean sales of the Ioniq BEV, while CCS is having a significant boost, as BMW i3, Chevrolet Bolt, VW e-Golf and Hyundai Ioniq Electric are all adding volume to their sales. On the other hand, most brands behind it are still focused on plug-in hybrids, that don't include fast-charging.

2018 will be an all important year in the race between Chademo and CCS, as the new Nissan Leaf will defend Chademo's lead over the rising CCS-Armada of BEV's.

Finally, while the Tesla SC is not intended to fight the other two, the truth is that strong sales of the Tesla brand made it the best selling Fast-charging protocol, increasing its lead over the CCS and with the ever-expanding network, top-of-the-range charging abilities and the undisclosed numbers of the popular Model 3 being added in the following years, expect the Tesla SC to remain a popular fast charging standard in the next decades.

  1. Jose,

For the number of CHAdeMO EVs/PHVs,
    Nissan: 51,962
    Mitsubishi: 26,634
    Toyota Prius PHV (Japan): 26,734
    Hyundai Ioniq EV (S.Korea): 7,842
Kia Soul EV(S.K., USA, Eur.): 2,923

Those already add up to 116,095.

Add Peugeot, Citroën and Mahindra and the number should well exceed 120,000 ...and, Tesla EVs are also CHAdeMO-compatible.

  4. agree, what about GB/T, it is now the dominant standard, cars will primarily be designed for GB/T and then modified for their secondary markets.

Also does the Chademo exclude USA Toyota Prius Prime?
Does the CCS exclude Korean Hyundai Ionic, as they were Chademo?

and yes, Tesla currently supports both GBT and Chademo in addition to the default Supercharger, I expect in the future they will also support CCS, but for now, they also represent optional Chademo usage.

  5. Thanks for the input, ppl!

Among other details, i didn't knew the Ioniq BEV was Chademo-based in SK.

Will change the numbers in order to reflect the new data.

  6. Chademo outlet is optional on the Prius Prime in Japan, I higly doubt it's a popular option.

The Chademo port has been removed on the Outlander PHEV (except in Japan?).

Any way, there should be some distinction between BEVs and short range PHEVs. A bunch of outlanders with a Chademo plug doesn't say much really...

Also the Ioniq in SK is CCS.

And 67% of all EVs sold in SK last year had CCS.

But it's not like it matters much, South Korea, Europe and America among others has settled for CCS.

So it's basically one standard for Japan, one for China, one for Tesla and one for the rest of the world.

    1. CHAdeMO is a global standard, recognized by IEC, ISO and IEEE. More than 90% of Prius PHVs in Japan are fitted with CHAdeMO. All Outlander PHEVs can be fitted with CHAdeMO...a standard option in many countries. And I don't think you know anything about the real situation in S.K. Have you ever visited S.K.? So please don't spread the fake news.
