France May 2021

Zoe #1 in May, Model 3 #1 YTD

The French plugin market continues on the fast lane, with May's plugin share reaching 17% last month (8.2% BEV), pulling the YTD share to a record 15% (7.1% BEV), which is a good 4% increase over the 2020 result (11%), with the 20% share i predicted for the whole year looks well on target.

Interestingly, most of the growth is coming from PHEVs, with plugin hybrids representing 53% of registrations in May, 1% above this year average and a significant jump over the 40% they had in 2020. Maybe it's time to cut subsidies on plugin hybrids?

For the first time this year, in May the Renault Zoe managed to win its domestic Best Seller trophy, thanks to 2,577 units, a new year best, so it looks the French maker has (finally) recovered from the late 2020 registration fever, and is back at its usual self, so expect the Zoe to collect a few more trophies during the next months...

...But not in June, because that one seems destined for the Tesla Model 3, that pulled out a surprising 2,111 registrations score last month, with the sports sedan now set to score a new personal best next month (5,000 units? 6,000?), thus beating the expected 3,000-3,500 June score of the Renault Zoe.

These are bad news for the Peugeot 208 EV, 4th in May, with 1,199 units, because not only the Top 2 are in good shape, but also because its stablemate Peugeot 3008 PHEV (#3, 1,712 units), thanks to its recent facelift, the crossover is running in high voltage, scoring another near-record score, it means the small Pug should only have a chance at a podium seat in July, time when the Model 3 takes its usual vacances month off.

On the first half of the table, the biggest surprise is the appearance of SAIC's MG eHS PHEV in #7, with 590 deliveries, shattering its previous record, and making an impressive result for the Sino-British SUV, being also the highest standing ever for a SAIC model in France.

Another surprise on the first half of the table is the instant success of the #8 Hyundai Tucson PHEV, that scored 578 units right in its landing month, so expect the popular Korean SUV to continue riding the wave of success, maybe even scoring a few Top 5 positions soon.

Elsewhere, a mention to the record score of the #19 Audi Q3 PHEV, with 359 units, while its less aspirational relative Volkswagen Tiguan PHEV was #20, with 338 units.

Below the Top 20, a mention to the 331 deliveries of the popular Ford Kuga PHEV, while the Skoda Enyaq had 234 units in only its second month on the market, and keeping with the VW Group compact SUV/Crossover topic, the new Cupra Terminator Formentor PHEV had a record 253 units score last month, so the sporty crossover could be another candidate for a Top 20 presence.

Looking at the 2021 ranking, the Peugeot 208 EV had a steep crash from the leadership, with the Tesla Model 3 (new #1), Peugeot 3008 PHEV (#2) and Renault Zoe (#3) all surpassing the Peugeot EV, in fact this is the first time this year that the Zoe is ahead of its arch rival...

But not all are roses in the Renault team, as the Renault Twingo (only 490 units last month) lost significant ground to its Stellantis rival, with the French EV hanging by a thread (or 13 of them, to be more accurate) to the 6th position, with the Fiat 500e looking set to climb one position next month and beat the local hero in the City car category.

The second half of the table had a number of changes, namely the Volvo XC40 PHEV climbing one position, to #12, which was the same number of positions that the Mini Cooper EV climbed, now in #15.

On the last positions of the table, the Renault Megane PHEV jumped two spots, to #18, while the Ford Kuga PHEV joines the table in #20.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Peugeot (18%) and Renault (15%) are stable in the top positions, while Tesla (8% share, up 1%) closes the podium, ahead of the rising Mercedes (7%, up 1%) and Volkswagen (6%).

As for OEMs, Stellantis is the major force, with a commanding 30% share, with the Renault-Nissan Alliance far behind, with only 16%, while the best foreign OEM is the Volkswagen Group, with 13% share (up 2%), well ahead of Tesla, BMW Group and Daimler.

It is impressive that Tesla, with only one model, can sell as much as both German Premium OEMs, that have lengthy plugin lineups, isn't it?

France April 2021

 Peugeot shines in hot market

The French plugin market continues on the fast lane, with April's plugin share reaching 15% last month (6.8% BEV), keeping the YTD share at a record 14% (6.9% BEV), which is a 3% increase over the 2020 result (11%), and the 20% share i predicted for the whole of this year looks on target.

Interestingly, most of the growth is coming from PHEVs, with plugin hybrids representing 54% of registrations in April, a 2% increase over this year average and a significant jump over the 40% they had in 2020. Maybe it's time to cut subsidies on PHEVs?

After winning in January the Best Seller trophy for the first time, the Peugeot 3008 PHEV has done it again, and with a record performance (1,726 registrations), its second in a row, and with the 208 EV ending the month in the second spot, Peugeot had a 1-2 win last month.

This time the Renault Zoe got a podium seat, benefiting from the usual off month of the Tesla Model 3 (209 units in April), but the Renault EV is far from its best days, this being only its second podium this year (the other was a 3rd place in January).

The bad news continued for Renault, with the Twingo EV being beaten by its Stellantis rival,  the Fiat 500e, with the Italian EV jumping to 4th, thanks to 740 units.

The only ray of light for the Renault-Nissan Alliance was the (slow) deliveries ramp up of the Dacia Spring, now at 249 units, so we should see the low-cost EV showing up on the table in the coming months.

Elsewhere, a mention to the record score (its second in a row) of the #7 Mini Cooper EV, with 592 deliveries, while the VW ID.4 showed up in #17, thanks to 372 deliveries, just 19 units below the VW ID.3, that had another disappointing performance, with just 391 registrations.

Below the Top 20, a mention to the 282 deliveries of the Citroen C4 EV, a new record for the nameplate and a sign that the production ramp up is still in development, while the Skoda Enyaq landed, with 134 units, a promising sign for the Czech MEB-based station wagon desguised as SUV.

Looking at the 2021 ranking, the Peugeot 208 EV recovered the leadership, but with the Top 3 separated by just 220 units, anything can still happen between them.

Other Stellantis models climbing positions were the Fiat 500e and Citroen C5 Aircross PHEV, with the small EV climbing to #7 and the SUV to #8.

The Mercedes GLC300e/de is also going up, with the German SUV now at #10, while on the second half of the table, we now have the Mini Cooper EV jumping 3 spots, to #16, while April saw another Mercedes join the table, with the compact GLA250e jumping to #18, thus making the current Top 20 score among the 3 Marys now showing: Mercedes - 2 vs Audi and BMW - 0. Who would have thought a couple of years ago, that Mercedes would be the most dynamic of the three...

Another sign regarding the Rise of the PHEVs, is the fact that between the #17 Peugeot 508 PHEV and the #23 Volvo XC60 PHEV, all models belong to the plugin hybrid category...

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Peugeot (18%) and Renault (15%) are stable in the top positions, while Tesla (7% share, down 2%) closes the podium, ahead of the rising Mercedes (6%).

As for OEMs, Stellantis is the major force, with a commanding 30% share, with the Renault-Nissan Alliance far behind, with only 16%, while the best foreign OEM is the Volkswagen Group, with 11% share.

France March 2021

Tesla Model 3 #1 in France!

In a red hot market, where BEVs jumped 183% YoY and PHEVs shooted 6-fold in March, plugin sales had their second best month ever, with 29,737 units, allowing the plugin share to reach 16% last month (8.5% BEV), pulling the YTD share to a record 14% (6.9% BEV), which is already a 3% increase over the 2020 result (11%), and the 20% share i predicted for the whole of this year looks well on target.

So, this is what Disruption looks like...

...And Disruption is on display on the last month Best Sellers table, with the highlight being the extraordinary performance of the Tesla Model 3, with the 4,524 deliveries allowing it to become the first foreign model to win Gold in France, with almost 3x as much units as the runner-up Peugeot 208 EV, but also allowing it to join for the first time the Top 10 in the overall market (it was 9th), AND being March's Best Selling Foreign model in France, period.

This is a true historic moment, putting this into context to our US readers, this is like the VW ID.4 in a few months beating the Tesla Model 3 in the USA. Unimaginable, right? Well, that's what happened here to the once all-conquering Renault Zoe...

And adding insult to injury, the Zoe once again failed to win a podium seat, as the remaining podium positions were to the arch-rival Peugeot, with the small 208 EV winning Silver and the crossover 3008 PHEV taking Bronze, thanks to a record 1,571 units, beating the Renault models in both BEV and PHEV categories.

But not all were bad news for Renault, the #6 Renault Twingo EV managed to keep its Stellantis rival Fiat 500e at bay, while the compact Megane PHEV joined the table for the first time, in #19, thanks to a record 423 units.

One of the problems that Renault has in its home market, is that it's holding on the fort almost by its own, as Mitsubishi is basically a non-entity in France, Nissan is living from (hard) discounting the Leaf, and the Dacia Spring is still in its first baby steps, while on the other side of the wall, the Stellantis conglomerate had 7 models from 5 different brands in the March Top 20, 3 (Peugeot 3008 PHEV, Peugeot 2008 EV and Jeep Compass PHEV) of them with record performances. They even allowed themselves to grant Opel an off month...Impressive stuff, isn't it?

Elsewhere, a mention to the record score of the Mercedes GLC300e/de, with 778 registrations, while the Mini Cooper EV joined the table, in #16, thanks to a record 499 deliveries, and the VW ID.3 showed up in (a still discreet) #13, but Volkswagen has brighter news elsewhere, the VW Tiguan PHEV landed on the market immediately in #20, with 417 registrations in March, only 9 units ahead of another Volkswagen landing, with the much antecipated ID.4 starting its career in #21, with 408 units, just one unit ahead of the #22 VW Golf PHEV. Maybe one of the reasons for the ID.3 below par performances has to do with internal competition?

Still below the Top 20, a mention to the 360 deliveries of the Audi A3 PHEV, a new record for the nameplate, while the BMW X1 PHEV had 376 registrations, which could mean that the compact Beemer might show up on the table soon.

Looking at the 2021 ranking, once again the main news is the disruptive force of the Tesla Model 3, that shooted for the leadership, not only of the plugin market, but more importantly, on the overall midsize market, profiting from last month unusual high tide to secure the midsize leadership, with twice the amount of units of the runner-up Peugeot 508 (2,326 registrations). Funny enough, the French midsizer has 42% of its sales coming from their PHEV versions, which speaks volumes about the current electrification transition happening now.

Another model jumping positions is the Mercedes GLC300e/de, going up from #15 to #11.

In the city car category, the Renault Twingo EV climbed one position and gained some distance from the #8 Fiat 500e.

On the second half of the table, we now have the VW ID.3 up to #15, while March saw 3 models joining the table, with the Nissan Leaf in #18, the Mini Cooper EV in #19 and the Renault Megane PHEV in #20.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, the leader Peugeot dropped 4% in share, to 18%, but it is (still) enough to stay ahead of the runner-up Renault (15%, down 1%), while Tesla (9% share, up 5%) is now closing the podium, ahead of Kia and Volkswagen, both with 5% each.

As for OEMs, Stellantis is the major force, with a commanding 31% share, with the Renault-Nissan Alliance far behind, with only 16%, while the best foreign OEM is the Volkswagen Group, with 11% share.

France February 2021

Tesla Model 3 beats Renault Zoe! (And Peugeot 208 EV beats both of them...)

If the overall automotive market continues suffering from the Covid-related pandemic (-21% in February), plugin sales remained positive, with PHEVs on the rise (up 134%, to 9,097 units, allowing them to have a 52% share among plugins last month, not far from the 56% peak of January, the BEV recovery regarding the previous month is due to a less horrible month from pure EVs, that were down in February by just 11%, a marked improvement from the steep 41% drop of January. Still, the French market is known to be BEV-friendly, so fully electric models will likely recover as the year advances.

Regarding the plugin share, last month it reached 13% (6.3% BEV), keeping the YTD share at 12% (5.8% BEV), and if we were to add the plugless hybrids to the tally (HEV and MHEV), then the electrified share of the French market would hit 31%(!), as plugless hybrids hit an amazing score of 18% in February, true, most of it is due to mild hybrids, but still, this meant that petrol vehicles saw their share being reduced by 5% in February, to 44%, compared to the same month last year, but more shocking is the 9% reduction of the diesel share in only 12 months, with the black fuel now having only 25% of the (once diesel-addicted) French market...

At this pace, diesel will be mort here by 2024...

Looking at last month Best Sellers, a lot is going on in the top spots, first the Peugeot 208 EV had its first two win streak in this market, after winning in January, the Stellantis EV did it again in February, but the biggest surprise comes in 2nd, with the Tesla Model 3 winning Silver, with 1,166 deliveries, its best off-peak score ever in France, which could mean that the sports sedan might be headed for a record performance in March (1,500?), and a possible monthly win in France, which would not only be its first in this market, but also the first time a foreign model would take that honor...

The last place of the podium went for the Peugeot 3008 PHEV, with 1,104 units, thus making two Peugeot's in the podium, but also securing the BEV and PHEV monthly wins, beating the Renault arch rival in both categories...

Speaking of Renault, its Zoe best seller was relegated from the podium, for the first time since 2012(!), ending February in 4th, ahead of the #5 Renault Captur PHEV (that lost the PHEV category to the aforementioned Peugeot 3008 PHEV) and the #6 Renault Twingo EV, that saw its Stellantis rival (Fiat 500e) ending in 7th, so Renault now looks to be surrounded by a Stellantis model assault (with a certain Tesla cowboy helping along) and with little help from their Group companions (there are no Nissan's or Mitsubishi's in the Top 20), it seems Renault is destined to lose its decade-long grip of the French market, and a new cycle is set to start.

Another example of the broad appeal that the Stellantis (looong) lineup has, is that the Conglomerate has 8 models, from 5 different brands, in this Top 20. Impressive, eh?

Elsewhere, a mention to the good score of the Mercedes GLC300e/de, with 412 registrations, while the VW ID.3 showed up in (a still discreet) #14, and the Ford Kuga (euro-spec Escape) PHEV returned to the table in #15, thanks to 302 registrations, its best score since July, so it seems the battery issues are now a thing of the past and the Ford crossover is back on its feet.

Looking at the 2021 ranking, we have two Peugeot's ahead of two Renault's in the top spots, confirming the disruptive times in this market and the end of a cycle.

But the Climber of the Month was the Tesla Model 3, that jumped into #6, and should jump higher next month, possibly to 4th.

In the city car category, the #7 Renault Twingo EV and #8 Fiat 500e are separated by just 153 units, so this category is starting to look like an entertaining race to follow throughout the year.

On the second half of the table, we now have the VW ID.3 in #17
, while the BMW X5 PHEV is now #20, having surpassed its Mercedes GLE350e/de rival, but has the rising #21 Ford Kuga PHEV just 3 units behind, so BMW's yacht will probably disappear from the table next month.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, the new leader Peugeot dropped 2% in share, to 22%, but it is enough to stay ahead of the runner-up Renault (16%), while Kia (6%, down 1%) keeps its 3rd spot, ahead of Citroen, Volvo and Tesla, all with 4% each.

As for OEMs, Stellantis is now the major force here, with a commanding 35% share, with the Renault-Nissan Alliance far behind, with only 17%, while the best foreign OEM is  Hyundai-Kia, with 9% share.

The Stellantis Group is starting to become a force to be reckoned, betting on a broad lineup, distributed by its 106 brands, that is not dependent on the behavior of a single model and allowing it a massive scale, that will help it play relevant roles in several major markets, with the exception being Asia, and most specifically, China, where they lack a competitive local associate.

With the French and Italian markets now in the bag, and Opel regaining some relevance in its native Germany, the only domestic market left for the Stellantis conglomerate to make their mark is the USA, where Jeep (upcoming Wrangler PHEV, future Wrangler EV...) seems to spearhead the Group efforts (now, about that Ram EV...), but for now, the American arm of Stellantis seems to be the laggard among the Detroit Big 3.

(Well, not long ago, Renault seemed unbeatable in France...)

France January 2021

Resultado de imagem para Peugeot 208 EV

Peugeot beats Renault!

After months of record sales, the French PEV passenger car market hit the brakes in January, dropping 1% YoY, with the blame falling in the all-electric models, that fell a steep 41%, to 6,471 units, while plug-in hybrids continued their surge (+115% YoY), to 8,220 registrations, allowing plugin hybrids to have 56% of plugin sales, a new record for the technology, in what is traditionally a BEV-friendly market.

Despite this slow start, because the overall market drop was more pronounced (-6% YoY), this allowed the 2021 PEV share to start at 12% share (5.1% for BEVs alone), which is already above the 2020 score of 11% (and miles away from the 3% of 2019), so it all points that this year we will see the French market go north of the 15% mark, and maybe even reach 20%...

Has disruption hit the French market for good?

Looking at January Best Sellers, the Peugeot 208 EV has beaten the Renault Zoe for the first time since last April, and adding insult to injury, it wasn't the only Peugeot model to beat the Renault model!

The crossover Peugeot 3008 PHEV became the first plugin hybrid to win the Monthly Best Seller trophy in France, by beating both the Zoe and its 208 EV sibling, all thanks to a record 1,410 registrations, making it an historic 1-2 win for Peugeot at home, and relegating the Renault EV to the 3rd spot for the first time in 8 years!

But one shouldn't read too much into these numbers, as it had more to do with allocation issues than actual demand, after all, in January, the Renault Zoe deliveries were exhausted by the "all hands on deck" effort of December, as Renault did everything to keep the Zoe on the last year European leadership, while on the other hand, because PSA had already complied with the EU 2020 emission rules, Peugeot delayed some December deliveries into January, allowing them to have a peak last month.

This highlighted Peugeot's great month, with 4 models in the top 13 spots (the 2008 EV crossover was #11 and the 508 PHEV midsizer was #13), while Stellantis, the new group that resulted from the fusion between PSA and FCA, had 8 models in the Top 20(!), besides the Pug models, Citroen's C5 Aircross PHEV midsize SUV was 6th, the premium SUV DS 7 Crossback PHEV ended January in 8th, the cute Fiat 500e was 9th, and the Opel Corsa EV reached 15th last month.

And with the Citroen C4 EV and Opel Mokka EV in ramp up mode, we could have even more Stellantis models in the table...

But January wasn't only about the newly formed Stellantis, as Hyundai-Kia also had reasons to smile about, with the #5 Kia Niro EV scoring a record 748 registrations, becoming last month Best Selling Foreigner, while the Hyundai Kona EV registered 475 units, ending the month in #7.

Towards the end of the table, a reference to the Mercedes GLE350e/de in 16th, highlighting a new trend in France, because plugless high end SUVs are seeing their taxes being increased significantly, due to the French CO2-based bonus/malus system, buyers of these kind of vehicles have to go PHEV (or BEV) in order to dodge the heavy taxes, so in the future it won't be a surprise to see several models in the table, besides the big Mercedes, we also have the BMW X3 PHEV in #17, Volvo XC60 PHEV in #18, and another Mercedes in #20, with the midsize GLC PHEV closing the table.

With Stellantis going full speed in January, Peugeot (24%) has started the year in the lead, displacing Renault (16%) from the lead for the first time in 90 9 years(!), so it seems Renault's  walk in the park in its home market could be nearing the end, with Stellantis as a Group now having a commanding 37% share.

In 3rd place, and far from the two French arch-rivals, we have Kia, with 7%, much thanks to the success of the Kia Niro EV and XCeed PHEV, followed by Citroen (5%) and Volvo (4%).

And all of the sudden, the French EV market has become one of the most interesting to follow...
