Record month in Austria

The Austrian plug-in sales are up 45% this year, to over 11.000 new plugins, placing the PEV Share in record heights (7.4% this year, ), with last month setting a new all-time record, with August having over 2.000 registrations, allowing the market share to hit 9.9% (5.4% for BEVs alone).

Interestingly, this market was known to be a BEV-friendly market, with all-electric cars usually representing over 70% of plugin sales, but this year plugin hybrids are growing faster (+241%!), compensating a slow BEV performance (+8% YoY), which is allowing plugin hybrids to increase their share in the total plugin sales, as they now have 37% of this year sales, with August reaching almost parity (46% PHEV vs 54% BEV).

Looking at the models table, the Tesla Model 3 was the Best Seller in August, allowing it to increase its lead over the #2 Renault Zoe in the 2020 count, to 107 units, and with the expected high tide by the Tesla nameplate in September (300 units?), the sports sedan should increase further its lead over the French EV, an important moment in its bid to renew the Best Seller status this year.

The Kia Niro EV is the current Bronze medalist, but it will have to keep an eye on the rising Hyundai Kona EV, that jumped in August to #5, thanks to 148 registrations, its best score this year, and with orders still to be fulfilled by Hyundai's Czech plant, expect the Korean crossover to continue climbing.

As for the Luxury title, the race looks interesting, with the #4 BMW X5 PHEV leading by just 8 units over the #6 Audi e-Tron, while the #9 Porsche Cayenne PHEV (45 units behind) and #7 BMW 530e (32 units behind) also have the big Beemer within shooting range.

A final reference to the #10 Volvo XC60 PHEV, that joined the table displacing the VW e-Golf,  now preparing itself to set off to greener pastures.

Outside the Top 10, a reference to the deliveries ramp up of PSA's BEVs, with Opel delivering 75 units of its Corsa EV and Peugeot, 49 of the 208 EV and the first 32 units of the 2008 EV.

Speaking of landing months, and confirming the current compact crossover/SUV craze, besides the Peugeot crossover, we had three other new representatives of the category landing in August: the Renault Captur PHEV (25 units), and the Jeep's Renegade PHEV (25) and Compass (20).

In the manufacturers ranking, the race is pretty close, BMW (15%) is ahead, thanks to its extended plugin lineup, followed by Tesla (14%), with Renault (11%) closing the podium.

Tesla Shines in Austria

The Austrian plug-in sales are up 17% this year, to some 4.400 new plugins, placing the PEV Share in record heights (6,8% this year, with April hitting 7,5%).

Interestingly, this market is known to be a BEV-friendly market, with all-electric cars usually representing over 70% of plugin sales, but this year plugin hybrids are growing faster (+119%!), compensating the pandemic-induced BEV drop (-4% YoY), which is allowing plugin hybrids to have 33% of all sales.

After a brilliant March, when the Tesla Model 3 was the Best Seller in the overall market, in April the sports sedan had its best off peak month so far, with 227 deliveries, allowing it to be #7 in the overall market.

The PHEV title race looks interesting, with the #3 BMW X5 PHEV leading, with 200 units, but with the #5 Porsche Cayenne PHEV and #6 BMW 530e (96 units in April, a new record) less than 30 units behind, the big Beemer will have a tough task ahead.

Outside the Top 10, a reference to the 36 units of the Kia Niro EV, that should join the table soon.

In the manufacturers ranking, the race is pretty close, Tesla is ahead, with 20% share, followed by BMW (14%), with Renault (12%) closing the podium.

Tesla Shines in Austria

The Austrian plug-in sales are up 67% this year, to some 2.700 new plugins, placing the PEV Share in record heights (6,7%, 4,6% for BEV alone).

Interestingly, this market is known to be a BEV-friendly market, with all-electric cars usually representing 70% of plugin sales, but this year plugin hybrids are growing faster (+192%!), although BEVs (+38% YoY) are also experiencing a solid growth rate, which is allowing plugin hybrids to increase their share in the BEV/PHEV balance (62% BEV vs 48% PHEV).

After a weak January, the Tesla Model 3 had its best off peak month so far, with 219 deliveries, allowing it to be the February Best Seller, with the sports sedan jumping to 2nd place last month, and with an expected 400-500 units peak in March, the Californian is sure to remove the Renault Zoe from the leadership, although the French hatchback could give some fight on this year Best Seller title, with last month performance (182 units), being its best score since 2017.

The PHEV title race looks promising, with the #3 Porsche Cayenne PHEV(!) leading, with 130 units, but with the #4 BMW X5 PHEV and #6 Opel Grandland X PHEV less than 15 units behind, the Porsche will have a tough task ahead, in order to keep the category title.

Another fresh face in the table is the #10 Peugeot 3008 PHEV, confirming the popularity of the French crossover across Europe.

Outside the Top 10, a reference to last month's landing of the Opel Corsa EV, with 40 units, while the Bratislava triplets (Skoda Citigo EV - 49 units; Seat e-Mii - 15; VW e-Up! - 25) are being delivered in significant numbers, and counted together, they would total 89 units, making it the 3rd Best Selling EV in February, an impressive performance for a city EV.

In the manufacturers ranking, the race is pretty close, with Renault (13%), BMW (13%) and Tesla (12%) running for the leadership, leaving Porsche, Opel and Volkswagen, all with 6% share, far behind.

Tesla Shines in BEV takeover

The Austrian plug-in sales are up 34% this year, to some 6.000 new Plug-ins, placing the PEV Share to record heights (3,4%).

In what was already a BEV-friendly market, with all-electric cars usually representing 60-70% of plugin sales, we are now witnessing a true BEV takeover, with fully electric vehicles representing 82% of this year sales (87% in June).

When governments play the incentives cards right, good things like these (Large BEV share and growth) happen.

On the other hand, PHEV sales are falling fast, with registrations down 12% this year (-34% in June), could this be the first relevant market to effectively make plugin hybrids redundant?

Tesla plays a major part in this surge, with the Tesla Model 3 in a different league regarding the remaining EV competition, having been #16 last month in the overall market, thanks to 346 deliveries in June, which was still a "meh" result for the sports sedan, after the 703 units of March. Still, with 1,454 units and 24% of the PEV market, no one is complaining.

The BMW i3 is in Second Place, while a slipping the Renault Zoe closes the podium.

With the other two Tesla nameplates also had a chance to shine in June, with the Model S delivering 80 units and the Model X, 43 units, which were their best results in over 2 years (we have to back to March '17, with the Model S scoring 110 units and the Model X, 60), allowing both nameplates to jump positions in the ranking, to #8 in the case of the Model S, and #14 in the case of the Model X.

Another model climbing positions is the Audi e-Tron, up 3 spots to #10, allowing an amazing 100% BEV Top 11 (Not even Norway has something like this), with the Jaguar i-Pace closing the pack, in #11.

The Best Selling PHEV is the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, in #12, so it seems that in this market, the Japanese SUV couldn't keep up the pace of the BEV armada. Interestingly, of the 7 PHEV models here, 5 are SUV/CUVs...

In the manufacturers ranking, Tesla is (way) ahead, with 29% share, followed by BMW (13%), while Volkswagen and Hyundai, both with 9% share, run for the last place in the podium.

Looking at the midsize vehicles general ranking, the Model 3 was up to the 2nd spot, with the leader VW Passat not that far away, so it is still in firing range of the Tesla Midsizer.

In other kind of markets, more PHEV-friendly, the upcoming PHEV version of the Passat could help it to keep the Model 3 at bay, but on this case...Not really.

So, one can say that it's up entirely to the Model 3 to win this category in Austria.
