Switzerland October 2020

14% Share!
The Swiss plugin market was up 156% in October, with 2.963 registrations and 14% share, pulling the 2020 growth rate to 71%, thanks to 22.063 registrations, with the PEV share now at a record 12% (5,5% last year), helped by the fact that the overall market is falling 27% this year, with BEVs representing 57% of all plugin sales (50% in October).
The leader Tesla Model 3 and the runner-up Renault Zoe can now find space for their 2020 medals, but the Bronze medal is still open for discussion, between the #4 Hyundai Kona EV and a pack of Volvos, with the XC60 PHEV currently holding the 3rd spot and keeping the Hyundai at a safe distance, while the XC40 PHEV and S/V60 PHEV are chasing the Korean crossover.
Speaking of Tesla, the Model X is back at the table, in #16, but the Audi e-Tron came out of nowhere into #9, while another high end BEV also joined the table, with the Porsche Taycan showing up at #18.
Last month, the Climber of the Month was the VW ID.3, that in its second month on the market, it jumped to 10th, with the VW new baby racing to reach a spot on the Top 5 by year end.
Other position changes were the Mini Cooper EV climbing to #15, thanks to a record 79 deliveries, while the BMW X1 PHEV joined the table, in #20.
A mention also for the Nissan Leaf, that with 59 registrations, had its best scores in two years (Ahhhh...Discounts. Always a sure way to increase sales).
Outside the Top 20, a reference to the 107 registrations of the Renault Captur PHEV, while the Mazda MX-30 is also being delivered in volume (81 units), the ramp-up of the Toyota RAV4 PHEV continues with 73 registrations, while the VW Golf VIII PHEV (55 units) and Citroen C5 Aircross PHEV (54) have landed with positive scores, so both the German and the French models should have good results in the future.

Switzerland May 2020

Tesla Model 3 back to #1
After the pandemic-related disruption, the Swiss plugin market was already up 40% in May, pulling the 2020 growth rate to 21%, by registering 7.657 units, with the PEV share now at 9,7% (5,5% last year), helped by the fact that the overall market is falling 39% this year, with BEVs representing 56% of all plugin sales (52% in May).
After an awful beggining of the year, the Tesla Model 3 returned to the leadership, surpassing the previous leader Renault Zoe, with the sports sedan now having a comfortable 360 units lead over the French EV.
Speaking of Tesla, the Model X (126 units) is ahead of the Audi e-Tron (102), this being one of the few markets where the Tesla is ahead of the Audi, but has to keep an eye on the rising Porsche Taycan (120).
On the PHEV side of the Luxury category, the #6 BMW X5 PHEV is leading the way, proving to be a success for the German maker, and with the Big Beemer now only 94 units behind the #3 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, we could even see it steal the Best Selling PHEV award from Mitsubishi's hands.
Last month, there weren't significant position changes, with the big news being the new fresh faces in the table, with the Volvo S/V60 PHEV twins jumping to #13, thanks to a year best 45 registrations, while in #17 we now have the (we can now officially call it) hot Ford Kuga PHEV, that scored a record 77 units performance in May, with a Top 10 position being quite possible for the Ford plugin, which would a first for the Dearborn maker and a good omen for the upcoming Mustang Mach-E (haven't i written this before?).
Outside the Top 20, a reference to the 53 registrations of new Volvo XC40 PHEV, a new record for the popular Swedish SUV, while the ramp-up mode Opel Corsa EV, the second-youth VW e-Up and the new Mercedes GLC300e all share the same number of registrations in May (21 units), being a new record for the first two, and the best score in almost two years for the midzise Mercedes SUV.

Switzerland February 2020

Renault Zoe #1
The Swiss PEV market is up 84% in 2020, by registering 3.006 units, with the PEV share now at 8% (5,5% last year), with BEVs representing 52% of plugin sales.
This beggining of the year witnesses the strong start of the Renault Zoe, registering already 477 units, but the Tesla Model 3 is the runner-up, and with March around the corner, the high tide should propel it to the leadership, with its deliveries (800? more?) pulling the market up.
Speaking of Tesla, the Model X is #20 right now, with this being one of the few places in Europe where the Californian manages to outsell the current category leader, the Audi e-Tron.
Speaking of SUVs, the #4 Volvo XC60 PHEV is the current leader in the category, accumulating that title with the one of Best Selling PHEV, having even scored a record performance last month, with 76 deliveries. Is the Outlander PHEV losing its grip on those categories?
Last month, the BMW 530e, a model that so far hasn't caught on here, has joined the Top 20, in #19, thanks to a record 46 registrations.
We have a few fresh faces in the table, with the Peugeot 3008 PHEV in #12, while its cousin DS 7 Crossback PHEV is #14, tied with the Mercedes EQC, that is finally starting to ramp up deliveries, while Skoda has two models in the Top 20: the Citigo EV city car is in #13, while the midsize Superb PHEV is #16.
Outside the Top 20, a reference to the new BMW X3 PHEV, that registered 25 units last month, the same number of units delivered by the Kia Niro PHEV, that seems to be in recovery mode.
In the manufacturers ranking, Renault (16%) is ahead (for now), with BMW (15%) a close Second, while Tesla (11%) closes the podium.
Outside the medals position, we have Volvo (10%) looking for an opportunity to join the podium, while Hyundai and Skoda, both with 5% share are running for the 5th position.

Switzerland December 2019

Tesla Model 3 wins in red hot market
The Swiss PEV market is up 82% in 2019, by registering 17.176 units, with the PEV share ending at a record 5,5%, with December sales going through the roof, to a record 3.584 units, up 172% YoY and an amazing 10% share!
Will we see this market hit a two-digit share in 2020?
With the needle already above 5% share, we start to see plugins on the top 10 of the overall market, with the Tesla Model 3 ending the year in #4, behind the leader Skoda Octavia, #2 VW Tiguan and #3 VW Golf, that itself has 9% of its sales coming from its BEV version.
The 2019 trophy winner Tesla Model 3 deliveries continue to pull the market up, with the sedan registering 5.024 registrations this year, with the Californian scoring 1.188 units last month, a new absolute record for a plugin, but this wasn't the only amazing result in December, the runner-up Renault Zoe registered a personal best 385 units (apparently, Switzerland was immune to the Netherlands black hole…), the Audi e-Tron scored a record 245 units, and even the veteran VW e-Golf was entitled to a record performance, by delivering 348 units, allowing it to jump 7 spots on the table, to...Seventh.
But the most unexpected performance were the 174 units of the Ford Explorer PHEV...
Wait? What?!?!? Is that even on sale?!?! - You might ask, well apparently it is in Switzerland, the giant SUV from Ford landed in the last month of the year with a bang, with the 174 units allowing it to jump immediately into the Top 20...Amazing, isn't?
But the great results didn't ended there, the #13 BMW 225xe A. Tourer ended the year witha record performance of 93 registrations, the #14 Mini Countryman PHEV had its best result (54 units) in 2 years, the Porsche Cayenne PHEV registered 94 units, allowing it to jump two positions, to #15, the #16 Volvo XC90 PHEV had its best score (46 units) in 18 months, the #18 Volvo S/V60 PHEV twins had a record 56 deliveries, the #20 Hyundai Ioniq Electric also had a record result (63 units), and even the #21 Mercedes EQC registered a best ever 53 units...
Basically, Swiss consumers were buying (and being delivered) everything that was available and had a plug...
In the manufacturers ranking, Switzerland is Tesla turf (35%), with BMW (10%) managing to beat Renault (10%) to 2nd place, by a measely 12 units, while Hyundai (7%) ended in the 4th position.

Switzerland August 2019

Tesla Model 3 is red hot
The Swiss PEV market is up 64% in 2019, by registering 9.324 units, with the PEV share now at 4,6% (4,2% last month).
The Tesla Model 3 deliveries continue to pull the market up, with the sedan having 2.868 registrations this year, not only an absolute record for a plugin, but keeping the Model 3 in the overall Top 10, in #7, mighty close to the class leader, the Mercedes C-Class (2.958 units), while the midsize class bronze medalist is right now the Audi A4, with a low 1.381 units figure.
With the Model 3 pulling plugins to new heights, the Tesla Model S and X are also recovering some charge, with both scoring off-peak year best results, with the #9 Model S (#4 in the full-size category) delivering 35 units, while the #11 Model X (#7 in the full-size SUV category) scored 47 units, allowing it to recover some ground to its BEV competitor, the Audi e-Tron.
Speaking of Audi's Panzer, the e-Tron climbed to #6, while the #5 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is repeating here what has already been seen across Europe: It is the only plugin hybrid able to run with the BEV best sellers.
Last month, the only changes happened on the second half of the table, with the BMW 225xe AT climbing to #13, while the Volvo S/V60 PHEV twins were up one spot, to #17.
Outside the Top 20, the Mercedes EQC (19 units in August) is preparing itself to join the table, now being just 7 units below the #20 Kia Niro PHEV.

Switzerland March 2019

Tesla Model 3 tsunami (Swiss Edition)
The Swiss PEV market smashed the previous sales record (1.341 units) last month, by registering 2.162 units, with the PEV share jumping to 7.5% (6.4% from BEVs, 1.1% PHEVs), pulling the 2019 PEV share to 5.3%, almost doubling last year result.
The Tesla Model 3 deliveries tsunami was the main reason for this brilliant performance, with the sedan having 1.094 registrations, not only an absolute record for a plugin, but also the first time that an electric vehicle is #1, all fuels included.
In the 2019 ranking the Model 3 is #4, well ahead of its direct ICE competition, the Mercedes C-Class is only #9 in the mainstream market, with 1.127 units, but with the #2 VW Golf (1.681 units)not that far away, the Californian can easily reach the runner-up spot, and even aspire to remove the Skoda Octavia (2.361 units) from the leadership.
But if the Model 3 is pulling plugins to new heights, the Tesla Model S and X are losing steam, while both ended 2018 in the Top 5, now the highest placed (Model S) is only #8.
Their ICE competitors are also further ahead, while last year the Model S was running at the same pace of its category best sellers, this time the class Best Seller (Mercedes E-Class - 551 units) is selling much more than the Tesla flagship, while things for the Model X are even worse, as last year it managed to feature regularly in the category Top 5, now it is only #12 in the full size SUV class...And only 4 units ahead of the just landed Audi e-Tron.
Looking elsewhere, the Audi e-Tron landed with the right foot, by delivering 93 units in its debut month, jumping immediately to #11, only 4 units behind the Tesla Model X, while two other recent long range BEVs are also shining, with the Hyundai Kona EV in #4 and the Jaguar i-Pace in #9.
On the PHEV side, the leader is the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, in #5, being followed by the Volvo XC60 PHEV, #7 and 48 units behind the Japanese SUV.
Another Swede on the news is the new generation Volvo V60 PHEV, that joined the Top 20, in #16, delivering 31 units last month, the nameplate best performance ever on this market.
In the manufacturers ranking, Switzerland is now Tesla (42%) turf, with Renault (10%) in a distant 2nd place, followed by BMW (9%), while Volvo (8%) is set to return to the medal positions soon.
