Volvo: Big in Finland |
16% Share!
Plugins continue a hot item in Finland, having become become a major plugin market when it comes to market share, with 2020 having some outlandish (+139% YoY) growth rates, and with the mainstream market falling significantly (-17% YoY), the 2020 PEV Share is now at an amazing 14%,with September hitting 16%, thanks to an unprecedented 12.279 registrations.
This continues to be a PHEV-friendly market, with BEVs representing just 22% of the 2020 sales, but last month, BEVs had a 35% share, thanks to the Tesla Model 3 deliveries peak (182 units), allowing it to be #9 in the overall market, but also due to the VW ID.3 landing, that registered 201 units in its first month on the market, allowing it to jump to #6 in the September overall market and become last month Best Selling PEV, this is a promising start for the Volkswagen hatchback, that together with the end of the production constraints of the Model 3, should help to change the fortunes of all-electric vehicles in this market.
Speaking of the only BEV in the 2020 Top 10, Tesla's midsizer profited from the September high tide to climb one spot in the YTD table, now in #6.
Looking at the remaining models ranking, the Mercedes GLC300e/de profited from the addition of the diesel-hybrid version to score 104 units, allowing it to climb another position, with the midsize Merc now in the runner-up spot.
Another Mercedes shining was the C300e/de, that registered 102 units last month, so we could see it in the table soon.
Interestingly, looking at this Top 10, we see 6 SUVs in the table, confirming the populatiry of this category in this market.
Another change in the table is the BMW X5 PHEV climbing to #9, thanks to 79 deliveries, its best performance since January.
Below this Top 10, a mention to the 95 registrations of the Toyota RAV4 PHEV in only its second month on the market, this is a critical model to the Japanese maker, as the Finland automotive market is a traditional Toyota stronghold, and now that this market in on the disruption fast track to electrification, they need competitive plugin models to hold its commanding lead in the market, as plugless hybrids are also starting to be swallowed by plugins.

16% Share!
Share-wise, Finland has become a major plug-in market, thanks to some impressive growth rates, with 2020 having outlandish (+117% YoY) growth rates, and with the mainstream market falling significantly (-22% YoY), the 2020 PEV Share is now at an amazing 16%, thanks to an unprecedented 7.349 registrations in the first half of the year, and the significant drop of the overall market, and while part of this drop can be explained by the pandemic disruption, the truth is that it was already falling before the pandemic, so the famous two-digit plugin share disruption is already happening in Finland, with many people delaying their buying decisions, contracting significantly the ICE market.
This continues to be a PHEV-friendly market, with BEVs representing just 20% of sales, and you can tell, as the only BEV in the Top 10 is the Tesla Model 3. Funny enough, the Best Selling BEV last month wasn't the Californian, but the small VW e-Up, that scored a record 59 registrations, jumping its 2020 registrations to 142, thus surpassing its e-Golf bigger brother and becoming the Second Best Selling BEV in Finland, behind the Model 3.
Looking at the models ranking, the Skoda Superb PHEV managed to get in the middle of the Volvo 1-2 lead, with the Czech model surpassing the S/V60 PHEV twins last month, while a few spots below, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV surpassed the BMW X5 PHEV, climbing to #7.
But the surprise of the month was the thundering arrival of the Volvo XC40 PHEV, jumping to the runner-up spot in June, thanks to a record 104 units, while reaching #9 in the YTD table.
Interestingly, looking at this Top 10, we see 5 SUVs in the table, confirming the populatiry of this category in this market.

Another model set to reinforce the SUV lineup in this Top 10 is the Ford Kuga PHEV, the registered 47 deliveries last month and should join the table in the next couple of months.

14% Share!
Despite a harsh climate and small incentives, Finland has become a major plug-in market, thanks to some impressive growth rates, with 2020 continuing with the outlandish (+132% YoY) rates, and with the mainstream market falling significantly (-8% YoY), the 2020 PEV Share started at an amazing 14%, the first time the yearly share goes into two-digits, thanks to a record 1.443 registrations last month.
This continues to be a PHEV-friendly market, with BEVs representing just 12% of sales, as the 100% PHEV Top 10 shows. The Best Selling BEV last month was the Renault Zoe, that managed to score a record 29 registrations, ahead of nameplates like the Tesla Model 3 (13 units), Nissan Leaf (21), Hyundai Kona EV (25), or the Audi e-Tron (20).
Looking at the models ranking, Volvo got a 1-2 win, with the XC60 PHEV and S/V60 PHEV models starting 2020 where they ended 2019, and with record performances to boot, with these two Swede models alone securing 25% of the market for the brand.
But the surprise of the month was the thunderous landing of the Skoda Superb PHEV, jumping straight into #3, with 95 registrations, confirming the local taste for midsize wagons (there are 4 of them in this Top 10).
Another recent landing is the BMW X5 PHEV, that has started ramping up deliveries and started the year in #5, with a record 80 registrations, becoming the Best Selling BMW in the table, ahead of the #6 BMW 530e and #8 BMW 330e.
Another two recent reinforcements in the plugin bandwagon are the Audi Q5 PHEV, in #8, and the #10 Mercedes C300e/de twins.

Finland November 2019

VW Passat GTE makes a splash in a hot market
Share-wise, Finland has become a major plug-in market, following the trend of its Scandinavian neighbors, and if November hasn't managed to beat the previous month record (909 units), the 857 still represented a 97% growth rate YoY, allowing the 2019 PEV Share to continue growing, now at 6.5% (10% last month), so Finland is a strong candidate to be part of the strict "two digits club" next year.
But much of this growth has to do with the recovery of PHEVs, now representing 75% of all plugin sales, with Finland continuing to be a stronghold market of plugin hybrids, as BEVs have always been outsold by PHEVs since 2011...
These are changing times in the models ranking, with the Tesla Model 3 (only 3 deliveries, bla, bla, bla, Netherlands, bla, bla bla…), being removed from the runner-up spot by the Volvo S/V60 PHEV twins, making a 1-2 lead from Volvo, but nevertheless, the Tesla midsizer is already making history, as the last BEV to reach the podium was the Tesla Model S, back in 2015…
Elsewhere, the revised Volkswagen Passat GTE made a thunderous landing in this market, with the German midsizer scoring a record 158 units in its first full sales month, allowing it to join the ranking right into the Top 10, in #9.
Other two models on the rise are the Volvo XC90 PHEV, climbing to #10, thanks to 46 registrations, a new year best for the Swedish SUV, making it 4 Volvo's in the Top 10, while the new BMW 330e jumped to #15, with 73 units last month, a new best for the Bimmer PHEV.
Outside the Top 20, a mention to the 36 registrations of the Porsche Cayenne PHEV, and with a Top 20 position just 12 units away, we wonder if we will see it joining the Top 20 in December.
Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Volvo (34%) is the leader by a mile, with BMW (13%) now in Second, relegating Tesla (12%) to Third.

Finland June 2019

Tesla Shines Bright
Share-wise, Finland has become a major plug-in market, following the trend of its Scandinavian neighbors, if in 2019 the growth rates are not something to write about (+1% in June, +5% this year), the mainstream market is falling significantly (-14% YoY), allowing the 2019 PEV Share to continue growing, now at 5.6% (4.9% in June).
But more interesting than the overall plugin share, is the fact that BEVs are recovering ground over PHEVs every passing month, now having 29% share (47% in June), a significant improvement over the 14% of 2018.
This is a major development, because this is (was?) one of the stronghold markets of plugin hybrids, as it had been four years since the last time BEVs represented around one third of plugin sales, and BEVs have been outsold by PHEVs since 2011...
A sign of the times?
This is a major development, because this is (was?) one of the stronghold markets of plugin hybrids, as it had been four years since the last time BEVs represented around one third of plugin sales, and BEVs have been outsold by PHEVs since 2011...
A sign of the times?
These changes are also visible on the models ranking, with the #2 Tesla Model 3 looking to close the gap to the leader Volvo XC60 PHEV, 192 units is still a long way, but the Sports Sedan seems poised to put some pressure over the Swedish SUV, and even if it doesn't reach the leadership, the Tesla nameplate will already be making history, as the last BEV to reach the podium was the Model S, back in 2015…
Speaking of Tesla, the maker has had a spectacular month in June, not only the Model 3 was the only nameplate to reach three-digits, but both the Model S (35 units), and the Model X (31), hit record performances, allowing the first to jump two spots, to #14, while the second rejoined the Top 20, in #19.
Good times at Tesla Finland...
Good times at Tesla Finland...
Elsewhere, the Mercedes E300e/de twins climbed to #10, and the Hyundai Ioniq PHEV was up to #13.
Outside the Top 20, a mention to the landing of the Mercedes EQC, with one single unit, no doubt for demonstration purposes, and we wonder if we will see it joining the Top 20 before the end of the year.

Volvo Land
Despite a harsh climate and small incentives, Finland has become a major plug-in market, thanks to some impressive growth rates, if in 2019 the growth rates are not so outlandish (+25% in February, +22% this year), with the mainstream market falling significantly (-13% YoY), the 2019 PEV Share continues to rise significantly, now at a record 5.7%.
An interesting aspect of the current moment, is the fact that BEVs are gaining share significantly, now having 21% share, a significant improvement over the 14% of 2018.
Looking at the models ranking, it's a Volvo-fest, with three Swede models in the Top 5, with only the evergreen Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (61 units last month, a new record) and the BMW 530e following the pace of the Volvo models. The brand plug-ins are getting more love here, than in its home market…
And the new generation V60 PHEV has just landed, so expect it to rise to a Top 10 position soon.
Another recent landing is the Tesla Model 3, that has started to ramp up deliveries and expects to crack Volvo's rule in this market soon.
Another two strong recent reinforcements in the BEV team is the Hyundai Kona EV, now in #9, and the Audi e-Tron, that landed last month with 14 units, which could indicate a significant demand for the German SUV.
Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Volvo (44%) is a comfortable leader, with BMW (13%) stable in Second and #3 Mitsubishi (10%), keeping a good lead over the #4 Hyundai (6%).
