Tesla Model 3 and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV run for the leadership

New Zealand's plugin market has recovered from the pandemic disruption, translated in a plugin share of 2.7% (1.8% BEV) in August, pulling the yearly plugin share to 2.6% share (1.6% BEV), reaching the 2019 levels.

Will it be able to reach 3% by year end? As the most dynamic EV market in the Southern Hemisphere, i wouldn't rule out that possibility.

Looking at the models ranking, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and the Tesla Model 3 are running for #1, with only 5 units difference, and because the Californian is expected to have a fresh supply units in September, expect the sports sedan to jump into #1 next month.

Elsewhere, the Hyundai Kona EV remains comfortably in the last place in the podium, followed by the #4 Nissan Leaf, that had 28 registrations last month, its best score in the last 12 months.

Also interesting is the VW e-Golf surpassing the Jaguar i-Pace in #6, but expect Jag's Sports-SUV, to return soon to #6, as the German EV is on its last months on the market.

The Tesla Model X and Audi e-Tron have surpassed the Porsche Cayenne PHEV and are running for the Luxury title, while just outside the table, in #11, we have the rising Mini Cooper EV, that scored 14 deliveries last month and is now only 2 units behind the big Audi, so expect the hot hatch to join the table soon, thus making 3 British models in this Top 10.

In the Manufacturers ranking, Tesla is on top, with 25% share, followed by Mitsubishi (21%), while Hyundai (15%) closes the podium.

Behind the medal positions, Nissan is 4th, with 8% share, followed by Mini, with 6%.

Tesla Model 3 and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV run for the leadership

New Zealand is one success story regarding the Covid pandemic, with no current active cases, and that is visible in the automotive market, with May losing only 32% YoY.

Interestingly, unlike other markets, the NZ plugin market has fared worse last month, dropping 42% YoY, with the Kiwi market registering  just 110 new PEVs in May, translated in a plugin share of just 1,3% (0,7% BEV), dragging down the yearly plugin share to 1,9% share (1,2% BEV), staying below the 2,6% share of 2019.

Why is this happening? I believe one of the reasons is the pandemic-derived supply chain disruption, because plugin inventories are in short supply, any disruption is immediately noticeable, while regular FF units have higher inventory levels, and because of this, ICE model sales aren't as easily disrupted as plugins.

Once the supply chain is back to normal and New Zealand starts to receive new EV shiploads, expect plugins to return to the growth path.

Looking at the models ranking, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and the Tesla Model 3 are running for #1, with only 6 units difference between both, and because the Californian supply of fresh units was interrupted this quarter, expect the Japanese SUV to continue leading until September, when a complete load of Model 3's should allow the Tesla sports sedan to jump into #1.

Elsewhere, the Hyundai Kona EV remains comfortably in the last place in the podium, followed by the #4 Nissan Leaf, that is making a comeback in this market.

Also interesting is the Jaguar i-Pace in #7, with the #8 Porsche Cayenne PHEV just 6 units behind Jag's Sports-SUV, so this should be an entertaining race to follow.

In the Manufacturers ranking, Tesla is back on top, with 26% share, followed by Mitsubishi (23%), while Hyundai (17%) closes the podium.

Far behind the medal positions, Nissan climbed to #4, with 6% share.

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV jumps to the leadership

New Zealand continues to be a hot market, especially since the landing of the Tesla Model 3, with the Kiwi market registering 467 new PEVs in the first two months of 2020, pulling the yearly plugin share to 2,8% share (1,6% BEV), already above the 2,6% share of 2019.

Looking at the models ranking, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV jumped ahead of the Tesla Model 3 and is the new leader, with the Japanese SUV scoring a record 75 registrations, an impressive result for a model that has been on the market for over 500 5 years.

Another surprising result are the 27 deliveries of the VW e-Golf last month, so it seems Volkswagen has included New Zealand in their top tier markets.

Also interesting is the Nissan Leaf showing up in #6, while the Full Size SUV race is pretty balanced, with the #7 Porsche Cayenne PHEV just 4 units ahead of the Audi e-Tron and Tesla Model X, in what could be an entertaining race to follow throughout the year.

In the Manufacturers ranking, Mitsubishi is leading the way, with 26% share, followed by Tesla (21%), while Hyundai (19%) closes the podium.

Far behind, Volkswagen is #4, with 6% share.

Markets Roundup - December 2019

Image result for EV cars gathering

I. Big Markets

Let's see how the Big EV Markets fared in 2019:

China

* BAIC EU-Series #1 - First time winner, but in 2020 it will have more competition;

* 1.2 million units - What a roller coaster, great first half of the year, then after the incentives change, a stark drop, with December ending with a sign of hope. And the Market Share reached 5.5%, above the share of the USA or Europe.

USA

* Tesla Model 3 #1 - Second win for the Californian, but in 2020 the Model Y lands, so...Enjoy it while you can, Model 3;

* 325.000 sales - Poor second half of the year, leading to slight drop, to 2.0% share.

Europe

* Tesla Model 2 #1 - First title for Tesla in Europe, to be repeated in 2020, but in 2021, things should become more interesting;

* 564.000 units - Sales increased the pace, with the PEV share reaching 3.6%, with plug-in hybrids losing importance, with BEV's now owning 64% of the market.

Japan

* Nissan Leaf #1 - Despite lack of real competition, the Nissan hatch did its part and won another title;

* 44.000 units - What can i say, sales have (again) dropped and the PEV share has dropped to 0.8%. Disappointing.

Canada

* Tesla Model 3 #1 - Canada's darling. At least until the Model y lands...

* 51.000 units - Strong, steady growth, with the market share ending at a record 2.6%.

South Korea

* Hyundai Kona EV #1 - A new year, a new win for the Crossover, scoring another all-time record (14.000 units). The Kona EV is the leader in Korea.

* 34.000 sales - A hot market, with doubling sales, and the market share now reaching 1.9%. A mention to the Hyundai Nexo Fuel Cell, that registered 4,000 units, leading to a 0.2% share, being the only place FCEVs started to become common(ish).

III. Other markets

A few words on smaller markets:

New Zealand - Tesla Model 3 lands and immediately becomes the Best Seller. PEV share jumped to 2.6% (up from 1.4% in 2018);

Israel - Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV was #1, market has beaten the 2018 records and reached 1.5% share. Too many PHEVs, though;

Australia - Doubling sales (9,000 units), with the Tesla Model 3 stealing the show and winning the Best Seller title. The market share needle is finally starting to move (0.9% PEV share);

Brazil - Volvo XC60 PHEV was the Best Seller, in a year that things finally started to move upwards (1,500 units), although share wise, we are still rock bottom (0.1%);

Mexico - Tesla Model 3 steals the show and pulls the market up (1,400 units in total), but share wise, it is still in its infancy (0.1%);

Colombia - Fast growth is moving up the needle (0.5% share), with the BMW i3 becoming the 2019 Best Seller;

South Africa - Jaguar and Land Rover came into play and together with BMW, they are the only ones pulling the market up, allowing it to reach record heights (300 units...);

Taiwan - Tesla Model 3 disrupts the market, making it grow 5-fold, while the plugin share finally starts to move (0.4% share);

Hong Kong - Although still far from the 2017 record (4,000 units), the 2019 result (2,000 units) allowed it to come alive again and reach some 5% share;

Singapore - A record 1,400 units allowed this market to reach 1.9%, with the 2019 Best Seller being the Hyundai Kona EV;

New Zealand November 2019

Tesla Model 3 - Veni, vidi, vici

New Zealand is the hottest plugin market in the Southern Hemisphere, especially since the landing of the Tesla Model 3, with the Tesla sedan immediately becoming the Best Selling plugin, overcoming the once almighty Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV by over 100 units (or an extra 25% of deliveries).

This is an amazing feat for a model that only landed in July and by the end of September, it was already leading the ranking. "Veni, Vidi, Vici" indeed!...

Back to November, 231 new PEVs (2,4% PEV share) were sold in New Zealand, keeping the year result at 2,7% share, a significant improvement over the 1.4% of 2018.

Looking at the models ranking, if the podium positions seem already found, below them there is still a lot to decide in the last stage of the race, with the #4 Hyundai Ioniq Electric having to defend its position from the #5 Mini Countryman PHEV and #6 Toyota Prius PHEV, while the #10 Tesla Model X will have to deliver a strong December, if it wants to keep its ranking position safe from the recently landed Nissan Leaf, that registered 12 units last month, being just 3 units behind the Californian SUV.

In the Manufacturers ranking, Tesla is leading the way, with 26% share, followed by Hyundai (22%), while the seven times Best Selling Manufacturer Mitsubishi is in Third Place (21%), looking to have a shot at recovering the Silver Medal in December.
