Sweden December 2014

Surge Edition

449 new EV's were registered last month, with the EV Share stable at 1,66%, which two time more than the 0,71% of last year and four(!) times more than 2012...YTD numbers are slightly above 5.000 units, which is more than all the other years combined!

Looking at the Monthly models ranking, this time Swedes gave a little love to the home-boy V60 Plug-In (110 units), that almost caught the leader Outlander PHEV (139 units, undisputed leader since Nov.'13!).

Tesla surged to #3, with 64 units (AWD factor?), its best result ever in Sweden, while behind it two Renault models continue to impress, with the Kangoo ZE (39 units, best result since 2012) and the Zoe (32 units, second best result ever) contributing for a positive second half of the year for the french brand.

PlModelSales
1
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
139
2Volvo V60 Plug-In110
3Tesla Model S64
3Renault Kangoo ZE39
5Renault Zoe32

The last month of the year brought a few minor changes to the YTD ranking, with the Zoe passing the e-Up! to reach #8, while the Audi A3 e-Tron is now #15.

There has been always a different EV Sales leader in each passing year since 2009 (Think EV '09; Volvo C30 Electric '10; Mitsu I-Miev '11; Prius Plug-in '12; Volvo V60 Plug-In '13), and this year is not an exception, with the Mitsu Outlander PHEV winning by several miles (45% Share!) to the competition, leaving the last year leader in a distant Second, while the best pure electric car comes in Third, the Nissan Leaf collects for the second time this title, while it had won its third consecutive Bronze Medal.

Looking at the brands ranking, thanks to its SUV, Mitsubishi wins easily the title from Volvo (#2 with 15%), while Renault ends again in Third, this time with 11% share.

In 2015 the Mitsu Outlander PHEV should be the first to renew the Best Seller title, but it has to keep an eye on the VW Golf GTE, while Volvo and Tesla will try to erode its domination thanks to their new AWD offerings. As for sales predictions, i would go with some 6k-7k units, a slower growth percentage-wise, but a significant one nevertheless.

Spain December 2014

It has the home advantage here, but can it win away too?

1-2 Win for Nissan

We start our round for December with Spain, which has the added bonus of new data regarding LCV's and a surprise win there, but more on that later...

The year ended on a strong note, with 287 units sold, second best result of the year, placing the YTD sales at 1.956 units, a new record for the Spanish EV Market, and a 53% improvement over 2013. The EV Share also had a small jump, establishing itself at 0,228%, above the 0,176% of 2013.

Looking at the December models ranking, the Nissan Leaf collected another monthly trophy (Fifth in a row), with 71 registrations (Second Best Result of the year) and 465 YTD, the best yearly performance in Spain by any model not named Renault Twizy.

But the real news came in Second, with Nissan's utilitarian e-NV200 registering 46 units in December and 184 YTD, placing the japanese offering ahead of the LCV sales champion Kangoo ZE (164 units YTD), sure, being built in Barcelona gives the e-NV200 a home advantage, but nevertheless, it is a warning sign for Renault and an indication that Nissan might have another winner here.

On the YTD ranking, the undisputed leader was the Nissan Leaf (24% share, 3% more than last year), which repeated this year the Best Seller title won in 2013, while the Renault Zoe ended in the runner-up position, with 289 units, a 53% increase over last year, and the last position of the podium was for the first time for a plug-in hybrid, the Mitsu Outlander PHEV surprised everyone and ended in #3, tripling at the same time the global PHEV share to 15%.

By brands, after winning in 2012 and 2013, Renault (34%) got again the title, but this time it had to sweat to remain in front of Nissan (33%), while BMW (12%) took the Bronze medal from Mitsubishi (12%) in the final stage, thanks to another brilliant performance from the i8 sports-car (5 units in December, #10 YTD, ahead of the Panamera Plug-In and Tesla!). As a whole, the Renault-Nissan Alliance as a group got 67% share, so this is a market that is deeply-in-Alliance turf.

A final reference for Volkswagen, while it was the Best Selling Brand in the global market, regarding plug-ins it only got 2%(!) share. Those EV prices have to come down, VW...
After a accurate preview of 2014, 2015 should continue to see the Spanish EV Market growing, with sales reaching at least 3.000 units (If incentives continue, of course), while the Nissan Leaf will try to defend its crown from the competition, both form the inside (Renault Zoe) as from the outside (Outlander PHEV).

2014 in Review

2014, also known as  Year Four of the Modern Age of Electric Cars has ended, so i took the time to review some of the most important facts of EV Markets this year:

Bumpy Ride for Tesla

For some it's the Brand-They-Love-To Hate, for other it's more like a Religion, for me is just a much needed disruptive automaker that will force established players go into plug-ins.

And that has been achieved, with Tesla-Killers being announced almost everyday (Will they deliver? Will they even hit the streets?), but regarding Tesla itself, things could be rosier, with predicted sales reaching some 30.000 units (Still, a 40-50% increase) this year and the constant delays in the Model X production schedule and Model III development, the american brand is promising a lot and delivering still very little (30k units are a blip compared with the near million units that German Premium carmakers deliver every year).

This year sales grew thanks to new markets to the brand and growth in existing ones, like Canada (600 in '13 vs 800-900 in '14) or Norway (2k vs 4k), while others had plateaued, like the all-important domestic market in the US (18k vs 17-18k) or the Netherlands (1.2k vs 1.2-1.3k), the AWD models addition will probably enhance sales, particularly in colder climate markets, as people change their RWD to AWD cars, but the real jump should come from the Model X, the launch moment and following production rhythm will determine if Tesla really succeeds in 2015 or if it's going to end as another so-so year, like it did in 2014.

During the year, Tesla was frequently on the news, be it for dealership bans, sales numbers, new sales markets & respective Supercharger launches,  China deliveries, or the more recent AWD Model S, which in turn revealed yet another debate regarding range numbers...

Despite all this media-frenzy, the fundamentals are there, the product is class-leading, the infrastructure is spreading, now all they need is Apple-like money to deliver all those promises they make.

Global Sales Continue to Grow

After a slow start, EV sales have increased greatly towards the second half of this year, with two months above the 30k sales (June and September), with global sales now expected to surpass the 300.000 units barrier, after the 140k of 2012 and low-200k in 2013, will we see plug-ins reach 400k this year? Probably, but much due to new PHEV's landing, one thing is certain, the millionth EV running around the streets will definitely be reached in 2015.

Growth Is All Around

While Norway continues to be the poster-child for EV Share and the US for volume, others are also making themselves noted, like China growing from one year to the other in an astounding way (18k in '13 vs 50-55k in '14), Germany (0,42% Share in '14 vs 0,23% in '13) and the UK finally waking up to plug-ins (0,52% vs 0,16%) and many countries of the Scandinavian/Baltic region, probably inspired by the Norwegian case-study, are growing at surprising rates and passing the 1% barrier, including some unforeseen markets, like Latvia(!).

Other markets finally had their Year One in 2014, like New Zealand (0,23% EV Share in '14 vs 0,007% in '13) or have rebounded into the righteous path, like Ireland (0,27% in '14 vs 0,08% in '13).

To see the difference between 2014 and 2013, while EV's lost share in eleven countries from 2012 to the next year, now only Israel is below the 2013 EV Share, with the culprits for this having a known face (Better Place failure).

Also of importance is the dissemination of plug-ins by other countries still not associated with EV's, like Brazil, South Africa, Mexico, Morocco or the UAE(!).

The Kandi Factor

Probably the biggest surprise of the year, this Smart-lookalike isn't a car to break new ground in anything special, except on the way it presents itself to the general public, in country without a strong car-ownership-culture, electric car sharing in giant vending-machines, like the one above, is proving to be a hit and although hard to find, delivery numbers prove it, with the tiny car racing the BYD Qin for the Chinese EV leadership and at the same time, joining the EV Global Top 10 ranking.

BMW's risky bet is paying off

When challenged to the task of entering the plug-ins car segment, BMW took a risky bet, creating not only dedicated cars, but also a new sub-brand with dedicated dealerships and sales forces, and on top of that, cars, technologies and sales network had little to do with the known BMW, it was almost like creating a new brand from scratch.

If the prototype-stage of the i8 was almost immediately loved by buyers and media, many scratched their heads on the stubby and most un-BMW i3.

The German maker first launched the i3 in late 2013 and with early mixed reviews, BMW made a conservative sales-pitch of 10.000 units for 2014.

Now that the year is ending, sales of the i3 are at 15k and the i8 is proving to be an even more astounding sales hit, with waiting lists surpassing one year...

No wonder BMW is already thinking in developing a larger i3 (i5?) and sportier i8 (i8s? i9?).

China is Rising

With foreign makers neglecting the Chinese EV market, the local brands were almost the sole benefiters of the threefold sales jump originated there, with the Chinese EV makers global share rising from 6% in 2013 to 15% last year, surpassing France as the Third Global EV Maker country.

If BYD and Kandi are frequently mentioned here, others are also contributing for this event, like Chery (8.000 units in '14, only 100 sales behind Volkswagen), Zotye (5.900 units, ahead of Smart and Volvo) or BAIC (2.600 units).

Expect for 2015 to continue this trend...

Zoe Returns

Renault had big hopes for its Zoe, wanting to make it a sort of Euro-Taste-Leaf and hoping it would lead plug-in sales in the Old Continent.

Despite a promising start, as new competition joined the race, Zoe's sales started to suffer, ending 2013 in #2 in Europe (#6 in the Global ranking), but losing a lot of ground to the more recent competition.

2014 started poorly, with a #7 spot in the Euro ranking in January and continuing around there until May, in June sales finally picked-up (1.016 units) and the french hatch finally started to climb the European ranking, reaching #3 in November and re-entering the Global Top 10 ranking.

After including the batteries in the ownership of the car, Renault is looking in 2015 to improve range and chargeability of the car in order to improve even further sales and prevent the french brand to be placed on the "Losers" side of this year.

The German half-hearted foray into EV's are returning half-hearted results to domestic brands

With the exception of BMW, German volume carmakers have until now a pretty conservative approach towards plug-ins.

Unlike BMW, other German carmakers optioned for creating plug-in versions of regular ICE cars and selling them in limited numbers, with limited results to show:

- In Europe, the electric version of the almighty Golf is only #9 and the e-Up! is #6, while the Golf GTE/Audi A3 e-Tron are still giving their first baby steps;

- With two plug-in models on sale, Mercedes has sold 210 units last November, also with two models, BMW sold over 1.800 units in the same period;

- Regarding the other two german carmakers present, Smart is waiting for the new Fortwo model, while Porsche is comfortably managing their leadership position in the upper-end Premium segment (Tesla is in a whole different planet);

- The GM-adopted Opel Ampera is ending and Opel is waiting for something to come up from the GM mothership to rejoin the plug-in scene;

- Although German carmakers Global Share grew from 3% to 11% in 2014, BMW is responsible for 6 of those 11%, with VW having 3%, Smart 2% (The same result it had in '13) and the others...Zero-something.

Year Minus One for Fuel Cells

Fuel Cells (FCV) had been present in concept-car form for ages, but no one still had made the plunge to create a volume FCV car.

This year though, Toyota presented the Mirai, or "Future" in japanese, is futuristic in technology but also in shape, not like the BMW "The Future will be awesome" i8, but more like "In the Future we will obey to Terminators driving Mirais".

Sales started in Japan two weeks ago, and volumes are predicted to be small (700 units in 2015, 2.000 the next year and steady growth from then on), due to high prices and an ugly face, but the Tesla Roadster also started with small numbers...

2015, Year of the PHEV SUV

Pure electric cars have been improving their market share regarding PHEV's since 2012 (50% in '12, 57% the next year and 60% last year), mostly thanks to Tesla, but the next year Plug-in Hybrids should rebound in a big way, not only the refreshed Chevrolt Volt will probably double its sales, but there's also a bundle of PHEV versions of regular cars coming, particularly SUV's:

- Audi A7 e-Tron;

- BMW X5 Plug-In;

- BYD Tang;

- Mercedes C350e (Plug-In Hybrid);

- Volkswagen Passat GTE;

- Volvo XC90 T8 (Plug-In Hybrid);

World Top 10 November 2014

Kandies (Condies?) galore, now with certified data.

Models - PiP is Weakening

Some 26.000 plug-ins were sold last month, which represents a 10% increase over the same month last year, when the Outlander PHEV was flooding the streets of Holland, currently the YTD sales have surpassed the 275k barrier, so it's safe to say that this year we will be closing the year with the 300k barrier broken.

The podium places are attributed a long time ago, with the Fourth Place now firmly in Chevy hands, with the soon-to-be-deceased 1st Gen Volt distancing itself from the wrinkled #5 Prius Plug-In, which made its worst sales performance ever (893 units).

Next we have the BMW i3 in #6, followed ever more closely by the ever-improving  #7 BYD Qin (1.753 units, zillionth eleventh consecutive record).

The Ford Fusion Energi is on the verge of being surpassed by the #9 Kandi, while the Renault Zoe (1.290 units) continues to impress in this Second Coming, posting its third straight month in the four-digits area, a first for the french hatch.

A deserved mention should be noted to the BAIC E-Series, having sold 1.040 units last month, enabling it to win a Top 10 position (#9) in the November ranking, this looks to be another model to follow closely next year.

Finally, a curious fact, the Mitsubishi Minicab Miev Truck (Long name for a short car) reached 750 registrations since it started in 2012, which is halfway to be the Best Selling Electric Pick-Up Truck, a title still in the hands of Ford, thanks to its 1.500 Ford Ranger EV, made from 1998 to 2002, so at least until 2016, the Best Seller pick-up truck title belongs to a vehicle sold in a time when Britney Spears was dressing schoolgirl uniforms, Social Networks consisted on emails and Elon Musk still drove gas-powered cars...

Manufacturers -  Duels Time!

If the Podium positions are a dead certainty, the race for #4, between Ford and Chevrolet, and #7, between BMW and BYD, will maintain the interest on this ranking until the last month of the year, as both races are separated by less than 100 units.

My guess is that Ford should keep the #4 place, but BMW will have to push hard sales if it wants to maintain the Seventh Spot.

Europe November 2014

Quote hear in the media regarding the i8: "AT LAST A COOL PLUG-IN CAR!"

Zoe Reaches the Podium Edition

With more 9.000 than units sold last month, the European EV market was some 10% below the same month last year, but remember that at the time sales were inflated by the Dutch year end rush to dealerships, if we only take in account this year, this is the third best result of the year, after September (10.212 units) and March (9.690).

Looking at the monthly models ranking, the only real surprise is the return to form by Tesla, placing the Model S in #4, with 593 units, but the biggest surprise is the #7 of the VW Golf GTE, with 365 sales, mostly due to the Dutch market, that seems to have found a new darling on this model.

5BMW i3575

On the YTD ranking, the Renault Zoe climbed yet another place in the ranking and reached the last place of the podium, while behind it the Model S and the i3 will fight in the last month of the year for #4, right now only 122 units separate them.

On the second half of the ranking, there are three newcomers making themselves noted, thanks to the previously referred 365 units sold last month, the Golf GTE jumped to #22 and it's promising to be VW's Best-Seller next year, last month it already outsold it's BEV brother, the e-Golf (336 units) and it was only one units behind the smaller e-Up!

The other two models deserving a special mention are the Top 30 appearances of the Merc B-Class ED (#29) and the Cayenne Plug-In (#28), this last one seems to be cannibalizing sales of its Panamera brother, as the sedan suddenly started to be a slow seller (25 units last month), while the SUV sold 68 units and it's still in landing mode...

Final mention to the UK sales update that allowed the Ampera and e-NV200 to rise a couple of positions on the ranking, which says a lot on the current importance of the British EV markets.

Belgium November 2014

The Renault Zoe is looking to end the year in #7

Cannibals

154 EV's were sold last month in Belgium, a slightly above average month, pushing the EV Share up 0.01% to 0,42%.

Looking at the monthly models ranking, the BMW i3 recovered the Best Seller Trophy, with 36 units, but the real news came below the podium, with the BMW i8 reaching #4 in November and improving its personal best by selling 14 units (Will we see it on the podium next month?), tied with the Bimmer we had the Audi A3 e-Tron, performing satisfying numbers, unlike its VW counterpart, the e-Golf, with only 2 sales...Is the Audi cannibalizing sales of its less premium cousin?

Speaking of Cannibals, it looks that the Cayenne Plug-In (12 units) is already eating sales of its Panamera brother, as it took it only two months to sell more than its more planted to the ground relative (Only 7 Panamera Plug-In were sold last month).

On the YTD chart, the #8 Renault Zoe is closing in on its smaller brother Twizy, with only four units separating them, while in #9 we now have a trio, with two VW's (e-Up! and e-Golf) and the Smart Fortwo ED. The Opel Ampera continues to slide on the chart, losing two spots and ending in #16...Last year it was #8.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Tesla (21% Share) has the red carpet ready to roll off and grab the Best Selling Brand Title, but it still has to keep an eye on BMW (19%), as both its models are selling above expectations. In Third place we have Porsche with 13% share, its best performance anywhere in the World...

New Cars for 2015

Here are some plug-ins that will make headlines in 2015:

BYD Tang: Plug-in SUV in China. Mission: To sell in the thousands per month...

The 2nd Gen Chevrolet Volt will be probably the most important launch of the year, volume wise

A rather Teutonic approach to plug-in cars, the Passat GTE intends to appeal to middle managers across Europe

Tesla Model X: It was already in the 2014 Edition of this article...Will this time be for real?

Volvo XC90 T8: A Viking warship that is also eco-friendly...

Besides these, there are promises of a number of PHEV versions of regular cars, almost entirely of German origin, like the Merc C-Class, BMW X5 and 3-Series, Audi Q7 and A6, Volvo S60 and even Fiat-Chrysler is preparing a PHEV Minivan!

Finally, a question to our readers: Do you consider Fuel Cell Vehicles (Toyota Mirai, etc) as EV's?

ps - Merry Christmas, everyone!
