Battery Makers - March 2015 (Updated)

LG Sinks Edition

The leader Panasonic profits with the continuing success of Tesla, and with the Volkswagen demand now kicking in, 2015 has seen its share grow, so it all points to another great year for Panasonic;

AESC, the joint venture between NEC and Nissan, continues to lose share (36% in '12, 28% in '13 and 23% in '14 and 17% now), with the Leaf sales losing a bit of ground and with Nissan outsourcing batteries to LG in the future, it looks that the market share will keep on going down;

BYD's star continues to shine, with the Qin propelling sales, their batteries continue to win share, from 6% last year to the current 9%, while surpassing LG at the same time, now with the AESC giant in its sights, BYD counts with the Tang SUV to continue to outrun the market, win even more market share and maybe reach #2;

Samsung has a partnership with BMW and FIAT, and with both auto manufacturers plug-in sales improving, Samsung is experiencing a sales growth and climbing the ladder, it's now #4 with 7% share.

 - Lithium Energy Japan (GS Yuasa / Mitsubishi), benefits from the success from the Outlander PHEV, but the 12kWh battery only can do so much to help improve sales;

LG Chem has been losing share for a long time, and now it has lost three positions, but with a new Chevy Volt coming along and the New Gen batteries coming in 2016, it's time to limit the losses;

- Wanxiang, is the first of a series of small battery makers, it is now #7 with 3% share (Up from #11 and 1%), thanks to the success of the Zotye E20, but there are others, like BPP in #8 (BAIC provider), Tianneng in #9 (Chery provider) and german ACCUmotive in #10, this last one thanks to the Smart ED sales.

  1. Hi Jose:

    Perhaps you could give us a bit of background to these figures, such as what is in and what is out, and sources if possible.

    Presumably it attempts to sort out just automotive batteries, or maybe automative format.

    BYD produces batteries to automative format used in its buses, in very big packs, which it looks as though they are included.

    However it currently has around a 4GWh capacity per year, some of it used for stationary storage with a similar format and which would also help economies of scale.

    So I am not really clear what the figures represent.

    Thanks.

    1. Hello David,

      These numbers regard only to light duty plug-in vehicles (Leaf, Model S, Outlander PHEV, Qin...), heavy duty vehicles, like buses, or storage solutions are not included.

    Jose, these data include production of batteries for both EV's and PHEV's, correct?

  4. Hello Jose,
    could you tell me how these values are calculated? This would be very helpful! Thank you very much! :)
