Spain August 2017

Image result for renault Zoe in Spain

It's getting hot in here

The EV market in Spain is boiling hot, with plug-ins up an impressive 276% in August, to 661 units, pulling the yearly tally to 3.757 units, up 68% YoY, with the PEV Share now at a record 0.5%.

It seems the needle has finally started to move, but reaching the 1% threshold seems hard to achieve this year, maybe in 2018?

But it's not only sales going through the roof that make this market interesting, the YTD ranking is also showing an interesting race for the leadership, with four models separated by 19 units, if the Renault Zoe recovered the leadership from the BMW i3, both the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (121 units, new pb) and Nissan Leaf (71 deliveries), First and Second in August, closed in significantly on the first two, promising a four way race for the leadership.

But it it's not only at the top that things are interesting, the Audi A3 e-Tron climbed to #6, a stark improvement over the #23 of 2016 (Is Audi finally trying to sell its PHEV?), while the Smart Fortwo ED jumped to #10, and the Hyundai Ioniq Electric is paying dividends for the strong bet made by the local importer, jumping to #16, thanks to a record 42 deliveries (Once again, increased availability helps...). How high can it reach? Do i hear Top 10 and Rookie of the Year award?

On the manufacturers ranking, the leader BMW (19%) holds steady, while the Second Placed is being hardly fought by Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi, all with 11% share.

  1. Jose, great job putting together these numbers every month. Thank you for doing this. It helps us EV enthusiasts stay abreast of how the EV market is developing around the world.

I noticed the Smart Fortwo ED is listed twice in this list #10 & #25. Is that an oversight or by design?

    1. Sorry, one of them was the Forfour ED...

      Bug corrected.

  2. A new EV-car share platform starts in Madrid in October, using 500 Renault ZOEs. That might put a clear winner in the year ranking.

    1. The Spanish EV market is an intriguing one, fleet deals (Car sharing, rentals, etc...) have a much higher share of sales than average.

      Does anyone knows why?

  3. Most of the people live in multi-family buildings and that makes dificult to instal charge points; specially if you are renting the house.
