South Korea April 2019

Resultado de imagem para niro ev vs kona ev

Kona EV #1, Niro EV #2

The South Korean market is on the fast track, growing 86% YoY, having reached 1.8% PEV share this year, in part thanks to the increased availability of the Kia Niro EV, that is now in 2nd place, breaking the 1-2 win that Hyundai had last year (#1 Kona EV; #2 Ioniq Electric). Will the Kia be able to break the Kona domination?

The Chevrolet Bolt remained in 3rd, suffering from the same problem as the other local best sellers: not enough batteries.

The previous driving force (Hyundai Ioniq Electric) in this market is losing relevance, and right now is only 4th. Will the revised Ioniq be able to recover a place in the podium?

A final mention to the Hyundai Nexo Fuel Cell model, that with 607 units so far, seems to have found success, a rare event for a FCEV, and allowing the technology to have 0,11% share of the total market, a world best for Fuel Cells.

  1. Nice to see another BEV-only top 5 :-)

I wonder what is contained in the "others" category? Mostly various PHEV models? Any of them standing out from the rest?...

The relatively huge hydrogen vehicle sales are indeed impressive. I wonder what kind of incentives these get here? Very strong ones I'd guess?...

    1. Yes, most of the "Others" are imported models.

  2. Tesla Model S and X are available in South Korea... how well did those sell?

    1. Likely very little... Even if they had enough buyers, AIUI the first ship arrived in Korea only a few weeks ago -- so May will likely be the first month with any meaningful deliveries...

(And that's on top of the Korean market generally being *very* weak for foreign cars... Note that even the Bolt -- although assembled in the US -- is essentially a Korean model.)
