Zoe pushes up French market

The French EV passenger car market went back to black in May, with 2.885 registrations last month, up 23% YoY, with YTD the market up 32% regarding the same period in 2016.

The mass delivery of the 40 kWh version of the Renault Zoe returned to positive numbers, with deliveries up to 1.230 units, while in the remaining top positions, nothing was changed regarding April, with the usual Nissan Leaf in Second, with 237 units, followed by the trendy Mercedes GLC350e (178 units, a new record) in Third, the BMW i3 in Fourth, while the VW Golf GTE closes the Top 5, with 105 deliveries, its best result in 7 months.

In a market known for its stability, few significant changes occurred, in this case the main news were the climb to Seventh Place by the BMW 225xe Act. Tourer, thanks to 94 registrations, its best result in over a year, while the 2016 Best Selling PHEV Golf GTE jumped seven positions to #10, and its all-electric cousin, the VW e-Golf, had its best result in three years(!), delivering 26 units of the new 36 kWh version, rising to #26.

Special mention to the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, registering 75 units (Discount campaign?), its best result in 17 months, allowing it to climb to #23, while the first full deliveries month of the Second Generation Toyota Prius PHV witnessed an impressive 95 registrations, the nameplate highest result ever in France and three times the registrations made during the whole of 2016...Should the local importer receive enough units from the Mothership, and we could see it reach a Top 10 position by the end of the year.

In the brands ranking, Renault (50%, up 1%) continues to be the Master In Command, followed at a distance by BMW (9%, up 1%), and Nissan (8%, up 1%). Down in the ranking, Volkswagen is recovering ground, jumping to 4% share, up from 2% in the previous month.

Ireland May 2017

Image result for Hyundai Ioniq Electric in Ireland

The End of an Era? - Edition

The seasonal Irish EV market is growing steadily, with YTD sales up 29%, to 514 units, with the EV share now at over 0.5%, the first time it happens here.

The local Golden Standard, the Nissan Leaf, had an additional 9 units registered last month, but for the first time in years, it has seen its leadership status threatened by a new contestant, with the Hyundai Ioniq Electric registering 10 units in May and 158 YTD, staying only 21 units behind the Maste in Command

Will this be a model to stand up  until the end to the five times (2011/12/14/15/16) winner Nissan Leaf?

With the local Hyundai importer keen to deliver their BEVs (Something other importers across Europe don't seen to bother), this could be the closest race in the Emerald Island in since the Renault Fluence ZE(!) lost the 2012 title to the Nissan hatchback by three units...

Once a BEV stronghold, in 2013 it was still a 100% BEV market, PHEV's have grown last year to 37% share, but this year they have receided to just 29%, in line with the BEV recovery that has been happening all over Europe..

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Nissan is in the leadership, with 35% share, but Hyundai (31%) is growing, while BMW is Third, with 19% share.

Canada April 2017 & May Preview

Image result for chevrolet bolt canada
"Canadians like me!...Weeee!...."

Chevrolet Bolt jumps to Second Place

Canada's plug-in market continues on fire, 1.221 new registrations were made in April, up 60% YoY, keeping the EV Share at a record 0.7%.

With the Volt comfortably seated on the Best Seller seat, Chevrolet is now focused in delivering its new baby, the Bolt, in selected provinces. With 187 deliveries last month, Chevy's BEV model was for the second month in a row the Second Best Selling model (187 units), ahead of the evergreen Nissan Leaf (142 units).

With the (slow) ramp up of the Bolt deliveries, the model reached Second Place in the YTD chart, with 520 units, ahead of the Tesla Model S (482 units), now displaced to Third place.

Looking at the remaining models, the big news were the good results of the Chrysler Pacifica PHEV, with 53 deliveries in its full sales month, jumping to #11 and now looking for a Top 10 seat. The Audi A3 e-Tron and BMW 330e have beaten their previous personal bests, with 52 and 11 units respectively, possibly due to added stock availability.

In the manufacturers ranking, Chevrolet has its leadership secured for a long time, with 41% share, followed by Tesla (21%) and Nissan (11%).

Looking into May preliminar results, the Volt continues unharmed by the Bolt arrival, having registered its best result in 8 months, with 404 units, while the Bolt had a somewhat underwelming performance, with 177 units. Is Chevrolet not ramping up its  production fast enough?

The other significant model with available numbers is the Nissan Leaf, with 122 units, up one unit regarding May 2016.

Spain May 2017

Image result for bmw i3 in spain
The i3 is running away from the competition

BMW i3 new Leader

The EV market in Spain registered 456 sales last month, up 27% YoY, an impressive feat considering that the 2017 incentives are still far in the horizon.

YTD sales are also in great shape (+51%), with the EV Share at 0.33%, so expect record sales levels once incentives do come back.

This time we have a new Best Seller to celebrate, both in May as in the YTD ranking, with the BMW i3 now in the lead, thanks to 75 registrations in May, which comes after a record performance in April, with 79 units.

Great performance in May for the VW Golf GTE, scoring 47 units, a new record for the German hot hatch, allowing it to jump to #8, in what can only be considered a great month for VW, as the Passat GTE delivered 21 units, its best result in 14 months, while the all-electric e-Golf delivered nine units, its best result to date.

It seems the official arrival to Spain is doing wonders to Tesla, with the Model X delivering a record 13 units, allowing it to climb to #14.

On the manufacturers ranking, there were significant changes regarding the last post, as Second Placed Renault (15%, down 6%) lost more ground to the leader BMW (27%, up 4%), while in Third Place Nissan (12%, down 2%) is seeing Mitsubishi (10%) and Volkswagen (9%) come closer.

Tesla for a Cause: Carbon Pricing Awareness Raffle

Abigail Benjamin

When I was growing up, summer was the crisp chill of air conditioner hitting me as I stumbled in from the muggy backyard. During the summer, we plan cookouts, international flights, and road trips. We try to forget that engaging in these summer luxuries packs our air, water, and soil with carbon emissions that intensify all future summers to come.

Can we be blamed? Using fossil fuels is easy and cheap. The dollar value of a full tank of gas does not reflect the nearly 20 pounds of carbon dioxide emitted by burning a single gallon of gasoline. These emissions worsen climate change, devastating ecosystems and the economies and communities that our natural resources could otherwise support. These pollutants also have serious and costly direct health impacts. Even those of us with a strong environmental consciousness will find it difficult to know the environmental cost of every good we own or use, let alone entirely avoid or limit our use of those goods.

That's why businesses, legislators, and citizens around the world are calling for our governments to put a price on carbon pollution. By pricing carbon, we ensure that the societal and environmental costs of goods and services are considered in their production and consumption, incentivizing the transition to clean energy. Putting a price on carbon rebalances the way we think about and use emissions-producing goods, preventing us from unwillingly destroying our natural resources and polluting our shared land, air, and water.

Boston-based nonprofit Climate XChange sees carbon pricing as a critical next step in tackling the climate crisis. Transportation, a sector poised to undergo rapid transformation, produces over a quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. Carbon pricing would accelerate the transition to electric vehicles; as such, Climate XChange is holding a Carbon Pricing Awareness Tesla Raffle.

This July Fourth, Climate XChange  will choose one grand prize Tesla Model S or X winner and five cash prize winners out of no more than 2500 tickets in an effort to raise awareness of and gather support for two carbon pricing bills that are currently in the Massachusetts state legislature. The bills are scheduled for a committee hearing on June 20th, and have garnered widespread support across the state.

Massachusetts has the opportunity to catalyze a major shift in our nation's economy and energy system. As federal oversight of the environment becomes less certain, it is our responsibility to take effective action on climate change. In order to do so, we need to show legislators our support for carbon pricing. To learn more about the raffle and support carbon pricing in Massachusetts, please visit carbonraffle.org.

Jose publish note: Putting a price on carbon, now that's something i would vote for...Wish you all the best!
