Sweden August 2014

"The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly". Now, which is which?

Leaf  Attacks! Edition

560 new EV's found a home last month in Sweden, making it the Second Best Selling Month here, after the record 629 units record set last June, pulling the EV Share further up to 1,68%. To put these numbers in perspective, in August '13 there were just 111 sales...

This brilliant result didn't came from a super-month from the Outlander PHEV, like it did two months ago (428 units sold then!), Mitsu's SUV sold just 203 units, just a little above from the surprising #2 this July, the Nissan Leaf, that with 188 sales, has beaten its personal record in Sweden for the second consecutive time(!), climbing one position to #2 YTD. What is the reason for this sudden rise? Maybe one of them lies in the end of this text...

Third this month we have the V60 Plug-in (50 sales), incapable of holding on to #2 due to recent Leaf sales surge, and Fourth in August we have the Renault Zoe, beating its personal best with 34 units, while in #5 we have the little VW e-Up! (32 units), jumping in the YTD table from #8 to #4.

The Worst Performer title went for Tesla, selling just one unit in August and dropping two positions to #8.

At the bottom of the table we see two landings, the Peugeot Partner Electrique (EV) made its first registration in Sweden, while the VW e-Golf had landed, selling 9 units, the first of many, for sure, the german hatch is expected soon to go after the Best Seller Title, maybe that's why Nissan is going full speed ahead with the Leaf here, it wants to do well before the the e-Golf starts stealing sales, like in neighboring Norway...

At many families request, here's a Top 5 ranking of the Best Selling Cars in Sweden last month...

  1. Certainly new models are contributing to drive sales, but also the end of the kr 40,000 rebate in July is a factor, when the quota of 5,000 units was surpassed. Just like it happened in the Netherlands at the end of 2013, many buyers probably rushed to take advantage of the government incentive before it was gone. Nevertheless, sales year-on-year are up more than 200%! and as you noticed, the EV market share has increased significantly, three-fold as compared with full 2013.

See here: http://www.bilsweden.se/statistik/nyregistreringar_per_manad_1/nyregistreringar-2014/nyregistreringar-augusti-2014 for the details of the end of the super clean auto rebate, and the government promise to increase the fund still during 2014.

  3. I bet:
"the Good"<nissan Leaf, is the main character at EV story
"the Bad"<Tesla roadster, it has badass aesthetics
"the Ugly"<C-zero, is not a beauty

  4. From Tesla Motors Club Sweden:

So we had to re-ask our contacts on Power Circle holding in electric vehicle database ELIS. They pick their numbers directly from the Administration database and was able to tell us that in August has recorded 21 new Teslor in Sweden - 20 more than BilSweden knew about. In total there are now 167 Tesla Model S in Sweden. And this is a verified figure from the Administration database.

21 Model S for August and 167 for all of 2014 through the end of August according to Tesla Motor Club Sweden
