Germany February 2015

"Not So Fast, Mr. Golf..."

"BMW i3 - Return Of the Jedi" Edition

The 1.100 EV's sold this February means that the German EV Market has accomplished one straight year above the 1.000 units/month, while at the same time it almost doubles the result (623 sales) made twelve months ago, as for the local EV Share, ir is now at 0,55%, comfortably above the 2014 result of 0,44%.

Looking at the monthly ranking, the BMW i3 is back at the leadership, after a seven month hiatus, not willing to leave the 2015 Best Seller title in the hands of VW without a fight, in #2 we have another surprise, the only foreigner present in the Top 5, the Mitsu Outlander PHEV, selling 170 units, its best result since last May, while the VW Golf GTE sales were below expectations, closing the month at just 99 units and #4.

As for the YTD ranking, the last year leader BMW i3 is only 32 units away form the current one (Golf GTE), the Mitsu Outlander PHEV dethroned the VW e-Golf from the podium position (It is the only foreign car in the Top 6  positions), the Audi A3 e-Tron jumped four positions to #5, while both the Kia Soul EV and the Renault Zoe were down three positions, to #7 and #8 respectively.

Looking to the second half of the ranking, the VW e-Up! jumped four positions to #11, while the Merc S500 Plug-In vessel is slowly gaining speed (34 units, best result so far), allowing it to climb two positions to #14.

On the manufacturers ranking, Volkswagen is #1, with 27% share, followed by BMW (18%) and Mitsubishi (10%).

Finally, and confirming a trend has been going on in Europe this year, plug-in hybrids are winning ground every passing month, right now PHEV's account for 46% of the market, when just last year they only had 25% (And 15% in 2013), something that can be seen in the top ranking positions, with three PHEV (Golf GTE, Outlander and A3 e-Tron) in the Top 5 positions, when in 2014 there was only one (Outlander PHEV, in Fifth).

  1. Passat GTE? I almost missed it. That is huge if it has started deliveries, even though most likely it's just a few cars to test or to some auto dealers to get a feel of it.
