Point Of No Return? Edition
EV's continued the hot sales trend started last month, 61 units were sold in February, with an great 0,43% EV share for plug-ins, with the YTD sales at 202 units, three times higher than last year and only 54 units behind the whole(!) year 0f 2014, could this mean that the Point of no Return on sales for electric cars in Ireland has been reached? At least, it means that more and more companies are interested in selling their plug-ins here, a year ago, only Nissan, Renault and BMW were present, now there are nine manufacturers selling plug-ins!
Nissan, for a long time the electric car evangelist in the Emerald Island, is now harvesting the fruits of that investment, with the Leaf high above, with 143 units and 71% of the market. The Mitsu Outlander PHEV had a bad month, with only one registration, but it's still #2 YTD, followed by the BMW i3 in Third (8 units, personal best) and the Renault Zoe, in Fourth. As for the e-Golf, finally a decent sales month, with 6 units registered.

No going back. Ah, that's something I never thought I'd be happy to hear.
ReplyDeleteInkeep forgetting how quick these numbers add up. You've kept the numbers for years and I've been hearing that Ireland has only registered just less than 500 plugins. A number being quoted in newspapers for some time now and comparing it to the government's 2009 projections of 20000 of them on the roads by 2020.
Ah, never mind, I couldn't wait and so I did it myself. Surprisingly, 16 of so EVs were sold in 2010 (must be those old ESB I-MiEVs. Together, including 47 (including 1 PHEV, maybe that mysterious, white Ampera) from 2011, 763 plugins were sold and gaining 202 units of that this year!
DeleteYou are Spot On! :-)
DeleteNow, can you forecast the sales number for YTD '15? My bet right now would be 600...What do you think?
Thanks! Well, you did predict 300 cars last year which was more correct. I was slightly skeptical it would pass 200. So it landed in the middle at over 250 but closer to your estimate.
DeleteConsidering that we know for sure that January shapes out the whole year. 0.43% - 0.50%, counting in the varying factor that the later months can raise. 2015 has already improved by 28% compared to the last. So 2015 may sell around 125,000 cars this year. So the sales we're interested in could land between 530 and 620 plugins. I'm going to say 587, just to say it.
That's a wide target, but anything can happen! County Cork has just introduced a regional scheme calles Drive4Zero (something to try and copy Norway like free parking and getting companies to install work charing). Other differences from last year could be new modles, better stock, etc. Even the Renault Zoe, I have yet to see its new pricing for or without the lease of the battery, so when it does, the Zoe will make itself heard.
We know that it's a little pocket in a little market. And we know that it's very volatile and influencial. 2013 and the year-long wait for the new Nissan LEAFs for example.
