Spain March 2016

The Rain in Spain...

...Brings EV's to the plain!

This month promises to be fertile in record numbers across the EV markets, in this case, the 544 sales is a two unit improvement over the previous record, set last October, with sales shooting up a sensational 191% YoY, an impressive result, especially considering that the overall auto market is stagnant. This allowed the EV Market to grow to 0.35%, a new record for the Spain.

The Nissan Leaf cemented the leadership, registering 90 units and beating its previous best result, set in October 2013 (89 units). The Second Placed Mitsu Outlander PHEV also set a record, with 80 units, a record for any plug-in hybrid in this market, while the Nissan e-NV200 / Evalia also impressed, scoring 64 units, a new personal best, rising to #3.

Good sales month for the VW Passat GTE, with 46 units, indicating that it could be strong competition to Spain's favorite PHEV, the Outlander.

Two EV's from the old guard also posted good results, if the 35 units of the Smart Fortwo ED can be mostly attributed to the Car2Go car-sharing fleet, it is harder to find a reason for the sudden rise of the Citröen C-Zero (17 units).

An unusual registration is the single SEAT Mii EV registration, a purely demonstrative vehicle or a sign that the spanish automaker has finally got green light from the VAG Mothership to go electric?

On the manufacturers ranking, Nissan stays firm in the leadership (29%, down 2%), followed by Renault (16%, down 1%) and Mitsubishi (12%).

A curious fact is that four of the Top 5 best selling models belong to the Renault-Nissan Alliance, a primacy that even in France is not happening.

  1. The Seat sold should mean that the VAG will start selling Volkswagen e-Up cheaper brothers, Seat eMii and Skoda eCitigo. I hope see those in sale for 15.000 € during this year.
