Help Needed

Dear readers, as Electric Sales grows, so does the need for more comprehensive and accurate data, on top of that, plug-ins are spreading to more and more countries and sometimes it is difficult to detect and/or extract data from these new markets, so i'm calling for your help, if you can get EV sales data or know EV Associations from the below markets, please send me an email (efeelblog@gmail.com), so that we can put them on the map and "Spread the Word". Your help can be anonymous if you want and will be greatly appreciated.

Japan

Data is available on some models, but lacking regular data on others, like the Nissan e-NV200 or  imports, etc, which prevents us from getting a full picture of the EV Scene;

UK

One of EV Sales "Moby Dick", there's regular data on global volumes from SMMT, but data from individual models is sparse and comes with several months delay, with this market growing by the day, it becomes more and more important to know what is going on here.

India
There is some data regarding the Mahindra Reva E2O performance here, but it is not a regular source and it misses the rest of the electric market, now that the Indian market is seriously considering EV's, it would be great if we could start following this market.

Poland & Switzerland

There's only monthly data by single models (eg, Nissan Leaf), if anyone has access to the full data, including ICE-based plug-ins, please contact me;

Other Markets that require data source:

Bulgaria, Brazil, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Latvia, Malaysia, Romania, Slovenia & Thailand

Iceland June 2018

Resultado de imagem para 2018 nissan leaf iceland

New Leaf reaches the Podium

Sales grew moderately in Iceland (+38%) last month, but nevertheless, with the 2018 PEV market share now standing at 15%, the second largest in the World, one can't really complain, as 38% growth over 10-15% share is far more significant than the same rate over a base of 1-1.5%.

Looking at the models ranking, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV continues as strong as ever, having already registered 106 units in June, its best result since June.

In the remaining podium positions, there was a significant change, with the new Nissan Leaf removing the Volvo XC60 PHEV from the Bronze position, with the Japanese hatchback confirming its status as the best selling BEV, and could even steal the runner-up status from the larger Swedish SUV.

Elsewhere, the Kia Optima PHEV is the new #8, while the Hyundai Ioniq Electric surpassed the Renault Zoe, becoming the new #14 (#3 in the BEV ranking).

In the brands ranking, Mitsubishi (30%) is  in the leadership, followed by the  #2 Volvo (17%), that is trying to resist the charge of the #3 Volkswagen (16%).

Colombia June 2018

Image result for Renault Twizy Colombia

Renault Twizy leader in Colombia

Colombia is back at EV Sales, with 248 units sold in 2018, the market has catched the growth fastlane, having already surpassed the result of 2017 (196 units in the whole year), while the current record (278 units, in 2016) is a couple of months away from being obliterated, allowing the  PEV Share needle to start moving, now at 0.2%.

After the first pioneering years having been divided between Mitsubishi (2011 & '12) and BYD (2013 & '14), the First Year of the Electric Car in Colombia (2015) coincided with the arrival of BMW and Renault, with both sharing the titles since then (Renault in 2015 & '16, BMW in 2017).

The Renault Twizy in particular, struck a chord in the local market and registered 215 units that year, being the Best Selling model since 2015.

This year, the French model is once again ahead, but the BMW 330e is proving to be quite popular, becoming the Best Selling PHEV in the country.

BMW has another model in the podium, with the i3 registering 34 units, underlining the (relative) success that the German hot hatch has in Colombia, where it already registered more than 100 units since it landed.

Keeping with the BMW vs Renault theme, the Fourth position goes for Renault, with the Zoe, while #5 went for the BMW X5 PHEV.

Looking at the brands ranking, BMW is ahead, with 43% share, followed by Renault, with 36%, while other brands have 5% of the market or less.

Slovakia June 2018

Image result for Nissan Leaf 2018 slovakia

(Sky High) Records

The PEV market in Slovakia is on fire, with sales in June smashing all previous records, with 143 registrations, up 240% YoY, and more than doubling numbers on the previous record (62 units, set in the previous month), with the PEV share in June reaching a record 1.5%, and pulling the 2018 PEV share up to  0.8%.

And don't think this is thanks to tax dodging PHEVs, as 66% of all plug-ins sold last month were BEVs...So this is a market that not only is growing fast, but it is doing so in a healthy way, with a BEV prevalence. This is a good example to follow by the neighboring countries...Keep up the good work, Slovakia!

Essential to this brilliant result were the 52 Nissan Leaf registrations in June, not only it was by far the best result ever for a single model in this market, they but also represented 31% of Nissan sales(!) in the country last month. Congrats for the local Nissan importer, for grabbing this opportunity to shine.

Looking elsewhere, the BMW i3 climbed two positions, to Third tied with the Audi Q7 e-Tron, thanks to a personal best of 11 units, while the in remaining positions we see the Smart Fortwo ED climbing one position, to Sixth, thanks to 8 deliveries (New Personal Best), while the VW Golf GTE jumped three spots to #7, thanks to a record 8 registrations.

Finally, we welcome the Hyundai Ioniq Electric, in #10, showing up here thanks to a best ever month, with 6 deliveries (Do you see a trend here?...).

In the manufacturers ranking, Nissan is leading, with 26% (up 8%), with Audi in Second (12%,down 4%) and the #3 BMW (11%), closing in on the Ingolstadt manufacturer.

China June 2018

Resultado de imagem para Roewe Ei6
Roewe i6 PHEV: Handsome thing, isn't it?

SAIC (Roewe) goes after BAIC & BYD

The Chinese PEV market lifted off the accelerator, with some 78,000 units registered in June, up only 77%, this slowdown from the three-digit growth rates of previous months is explained by the fact that in June, New Energy subsidies were slashed to vehicles with range lower to 150 kms, so most small City EVs stopped being sold, draining a significant percentage of sales.

Consequently, the PEV share dropped from the record 5% in May, to 3.1% PEV in June, pulling the 2018 share to 3%, well above the 2.1% of 2017, and with sales expected to pick up as the year advances, the 2018 PEV share should end North of the 3% 4% threshold (5%?), with December possibly reaching 7%.

Last month, the Chinese OEMs represented over 50% of all PEVs registered globally, an impressive number, that is sure to increase during 2018.

With symbolic export numbers, the domestic market is more than enough to absorb the current Chinese production, helped by the fact that it is still a protected market and foreign OEMs hadn’t yet looked seriously at this niche, but with PEV quotas to be fulfilled in the near future, foreign brands are putting an effort, reaching 7% share. Of this (small) cake, 3% belong to Tesla, 2% to BMW, with the remaining manufacturers sharing the final 2%.

In June, besides the disappearance of most small EVs, several larger models hit record numbers, while the Roewe brand had a coming of age, hitting for the first time a five-digit performance, and even managing to snoop around the leadership race between BAIC and the leader BYD.

Here’s June Top 5 Best Selling models individual performance:

Resultado de imagem para white BAIC EX 400 EV
#1 – BAIC EX-Series: BAIC’s electric compact Crossover landed two years ago, but somehow, it has been overshadowed by the remaining lineup, a strange event, considering that it sits on one of the hottest segments around. Nevertheless, with the EC-Series offline, waiting for the new, longer ranger version, the EX-Series time has come and thanks to a facelift and revised specs (415 kms/260 mi NEDC range) and pricing ($28,500, before subsidies) in 2018, Beijing Auto’s Ugly Duckling is finally spreading its wings, having registered a record 5,708 units and becoming June’s Best Seller, a first for the Crossover. With BAIC’s little genius (EC-Series) injured, it’s time for other team members to shine, like the EX-Series.

Resultado de imagem para white Roewe Ei5

#2 – Roewe Ei5 EV: In only its fourth month on the market, the Roewe compact wagon is already showing up on the Podium, thanks to a record 4,661 deliveries. It seems the Shanghai automaker struck gold with this original offer, not only the wagon body is unusual in China but, for the time being at least, it’s a unique design, with no ICE counterpart and, in true Roewe fashion, it is one of the most solid designs, inside and out, coming from a Chinese OEM. If only the specs (35kWh battery, 301 kms/188 mi range NEDC, 116 hp motor), were a tad better…Especially considering the price ($33,200 before subsidies).

Resultado de imagem para white BYD Qin

#3 – BYD Qin PHEV: With the second-generation Qin just a couple months from landing, the first generation had another surprisingly good performance in June, with 4,606 units (new record), being BYD’s “Model 3” 10th consecutive “3-4 thousand units/month” result (Talk about consistency!). Sales are still going strong for BYD’s sports-sedan, and should continue in the 4,000-something level, at least until the new one arrives. As for the new generation, sales above 5,000/month should be the norm, becoming the Best Selling BYD.

Resultado de imagem para white Chery eQ

#4 – Chery eQ: Chery was one of the Chinese brands to bet early in plug-ins, having won the models title three times in a row (2011, ’12, ’13), with its tiny QQ3 EV, now the automaker is trying to regain relevance with the eQ, the spiritual (and material) successor to the QQ3, having registered 4,434 units in June (year best), allowing it to collect a Top 5 position last month. A vehicle marketed to city dwellers, for USD 24,000 before incentives, you get a funky city EV, with the 22kWh battery providing just enough range (200 kms / 125 miles NEDC), to cover the needs of the urban jungle.

Resultado de imagem para white BYD e5 400

#5 – BYD e5: The automaker Plain Jane sedan, and a favorite among taxi-drivers, the no-frills sedan registered 4,047 units in June, up 26% YoY. This second youth is due to a facelift this year and, most importantly, a larger battery, allowing it to improve specs (61 kWh, 400 kms range NEDC, 218 hp), for a competitive price (CNY 220,650 / USD 34,600), the model is a bit of an unsung hero in the BYD stable, as the 81,000 units sold so far mean that it is the brand third bestselling PEV, behind the Qin and Tang models.

BYD Yuan EV: A future Best Seller?

2018 ranking

There weren’t many changes on the top positions, in fact we have to go down to #6, to see a position change, with the Roewe i6 PHEV sedan (4,028 units, new personal record) climbing one position, while the JMC E200, one of the few small EVs to escape the subsidies cut, was up to #7, thanks to a record 3,638 units.

But the Climbers of the Month were the BAIC EX-Series jumping to #10, up from #15, thanks to a record 5,708 deliveries, a new second consecutive record for the Crossover nameplate, while the Roewe Ei5 EV wagon was up 4 positions, to #14, thanks to a record 4,661 units, expect both models to continue climbing positions in the next couple of months, with the Beijing Crossover possibly reaching #7, while the Shanghai Wagon might reach the Top 10 soon.

Speaking of records, it is expected that the Tesla Model X had reached a new all-time record for an imported vehicle in June, with some 2,350 deliveries, allowing it to keep a Top 20 position.

Finally, the BAIC EU-Series rejoined the Top 20, in #16, and thanks to a recent facelift and improved specs, the sedan should climb a few more positions in the coming months.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, BYD (19%, up 1%) recovered ground, thanks to the Yuan BEV landing, while the runner-up BAIC (16%, down 1%), lost share due to the EC-Series sales dip, with the EX & EU-Series unable to fully compensate this sales drop.

In Third Place, the Shanghai-based Roewe (12%, up 1%) holds the last place of the podium, with a significant advantage over the new #4, Chery (6% share), and with BAIC now only 4% above it, the SAIC brand is now going after the Silver medal.

Looking at the SAIC Group (Roewe + MG + Maxus + Baojun) as one entity, it already has 16% of the Chinese plug-in market, so it won’t be surprising to see it as the #1 OEM in this market soon.

Canada June 2018

Resultado de imagem para Tesla Model 3 Canada

(Tesla) Records Fest - Second edition

June followed up on the May record edition with yet another record (6,130 units), even if many models only have estimates, the disruptive force that the Tesla Model 3 brought to the market, made surely a new record performance in June, by adding over 1,000 units to the May record.

This allowed June to hit an historic 3% PEV share, catapulting the 2018 share to an all-time best of 2.1%.

June's record is mainly attributed to Tesla, which had something of a records fest, not only the Model 3 shattered the previous all-time record (906 units, set in May by the Nissan Leaf) by a large margin, with some 2,000 units, but the Model X also delivered a new personal record, with 382 units, and the Model S scored its best month in over two years, with some 295 deliveries.

This allowed the Model 3 to shoot right into Second Place, jumping 12 places, and should pass through the Chevy Volt next month, ending a two year reign of GM's hatchback in Canada.

The older sibling Tesla Model S also climbed in the ranking, if only one position, being now #9.

Looking elsewhere, a mention to the Audi A3 e-Tron, returning to the Top 20 in #18, while the Kia Soul EV and Honda Clarity PHEV registered new personal records, with the Korean Crossover delivering 223 units and the Japanese Sedan registering 168 units.

Regarding the manufacturers podium, we now have Chevrolet (20%) being pressured by Tesla (19%), with the all-electric brand set to become the Top Dog soon (July?), while in Third we have Mitsubishi (11%), only five units ahead of the #4 Nissan.

The Tesla Model 3 had its first full sales month in June, and it was immediately the Best Selling model in its category, jumping to Fourth in the 2018 ranking, and with the waiting list still to be completely satisfied, expect another strong month in July, so the Californian will probably surpass the Audi and BMW models next month.

As for the Mercedes C-Class, things are trickier, as the Merc usually registers some 1,000 units/month performances, so i guess the Model 3 will only be able to outsell it once the Short Range version is effectively on the roads.

The Tesla Model X is now consistently outselling its Model S stablemate, and has seen its sales grow (+12%), but nevertheless, with only 854 deliveries this year, it is only #8 in its class.

So, despite constant improvements, from a sales point of view, the Model X is still the Ugly Duckling from the Tesla lineup, as it sits in a segment where its direct competitors (BMW X5, Mercedes GLE...) sell three times as much .
