Tesla Model S Back At #1
The sales hangover continues, with sales (952) down just 47% YoY, with this August being the second best selling month of the year.
Looking at the Top 5 ranking, the Monthly Best Seller award went for the third time this year to the Tesla Model S, with 129 deliveries, followed by the VW Passat GTE (119 units, year best) and the Mercedes C350e.

In the YTD ranking, it has been an entertaining race for the leadership, with the Volvo XC90 PHEV and Tesla Model S changing positions every passing month, this time it is the Californian Sports Sedan that sits at the throne, expect the Model S to increase the lead in September with the usual last-month-of-the-quarter-peak, now if that will be enough to secure the leadership for the rest of the year... I doubt it.
As the Dutch EV market returns to its PHEV roots, the few all-electric models in top positions are dropping, the Nissan Leaf was down one position to Sixth, surpassed by the Mercedes C350e, while the #10 Renault Zoe dropped to #12 and the VW e-Golf went down from #13 to #14.
Exception to this rule is the 33kWh-improved BMW i3, scoring 75 units, its best result of the year, with only one unit belonging to the Rex type. An important change, considering that until now, only 1/3 of the i3's in the Netherlands were BEV's.
Big climbers in the ranking were the Audi Q7 e-Tron, up five positions to #10, the Cayenne Plug-in, which climbed two positions to #17 and the Tesla Model X, that jumped six places to #24. An interesting fact is that all these three plug-ins belong to the Luxury SUV class, currently the hottest place to be for plug-ins.
A twilight-zone event in this market is the performance of the Toyota Prius Plug-in, despite running out of production for over a year, it is still selling in significant numbers (13 units last month), inclusively its YTD sales jumped 96% YoY! Where does the Dutch Toyota importer finds these units? Who knows, by this time, the plug-in Prius is the most active undead of the EV market...

Plug-ins are also represented, with the Tesla Model S reaching Fourth and the VW Passat GTE #5.
The reason for the big boost in BMW i3 sales is most likely the huge marketing campaign that's going on in The Netherlands at the moment. In the last month (or two?) there's been posters in bus-stops, radio commercials, etc.
