Renault Zoe wins 2017 trophy, Mercedes GLC350e reaches the Podium
The French PEV passenger car market registered over 36.000 registrations in 2017, up 26% YoY, with the PEV share ending at 1.7%, above the 1.4% of last year, but nevertheless a disappointing result, considering the high level of subsidies associated, especially on the BEV front, as all electric cars increased just 0.1% share.
PHEVs, on the other hand, grew faster than their BEV counterparts (+60% vs +15%), which made them win sales share (32%) over last year (25%).

This PHEV share increase is visible in the December Top 5, with two (And a half - BMW i3) plug-in hybrids showing up, the Mercedes GLC350e broke its sales record, with 312 units, earning it the Second Place, a first for the three-pointed-star model, while the recently arrived Kia Niro PHEV jumped to Fifth right in its second full sales month, thanks to 157 units.
The bright spots for the BEV side were the Renault Zoe back on the fastlane, with 1.652 deliveries, its best result in the last six months, while the Smart Fortwo ED registered 312 units, the nameplate best result ever, making it a strong candidate for the 2018 Bronze medal (I mean, it's France, we all know that Gold will be for the Zoe and Silver for the Leaf...Or will it be the other way around? Mmmm...)

In a market known for its stability, it isn't surprising to see the Renault Zoe win the Best Seller trophy, its fifth in a row, with a record 15.245 units, improving 33% over the 2016 record, all while ending in #30 in the mainstream market.
The Nissan Leaf was unsurprisingly Second Placed, but the career end of the Gen1 has made itself noticed, as sales were down 39%, to just 2.381 units, dangerously close from the 2.112 units of the Third Placed Merc GLC350e, the Best Selling PHEV, signaling the first time a plug-in hybrid hits the podium in France, once upon a time a market known for being almost entirely being made of BEVs...
2018 might see all electric cars recover, not only the new Leaf will land, but the rising star Smart Fortwo ED should improve on its 2017 Fifth Place.

In the brands ranking, Renault (38%) won its sixth consecutive title, followed at a distance by BMW (9%, first silver medal in France), while Mercedes (6%) overcame Nissan in the race for the Third Spot, earning its first podium in this market.

ReplyDeleteThose numbers include LCVs (eg Renault Kangoo ZE), while the ranking i present only covers passenger cars.

ReplyDeleteLast year i counted LCVs with passenger cars, which inflated the share by 0.3%.
DeleteThis year i removed LCVs from the equation, making the PEV share closer to reality.
