Hong Kong September 2014

Premium Flavor Edition

This small EV market this year has been one of the few markets where plug-ins were down, with the usual major players, Renault and Nissan, selling less than expected.

But two Premium manufacturers are helping the market to turn around (September was the best sales month of the year), and at the same time break the Renault-Nissan Alliance domination, BMW sold ten i3 in Hong Kong last month, the best sales result made by anyone this year, while Tesla pulled its Model S to the YTD leadership, which is currently shared by a troika: Alongside the american Sports Sedan, we have also the BMW i3 and Nissan Leaf, all with 18 units sold.

Further down, the Renault Twizy is #4 with 13 sales, followed by the Mitsubishi Miev family, with the I-Miev, with 4 units and finally the Minicab Miev in #6 with 3.

  1. some time ago i recall the first deliveries of Model S to Hong Kong. At least 8 Model S should be running on Hong Kong streets by now ;-)

    1. This 2013 article claims, 300+ HK orders for Tesla.
      http://hkcarworld.com/news/tesla-eyes-china-after-300-plus-hong-kong-orders

Tesla also added 50+ employees in HK service center. And forum postings indicate couple of hundred at least. Are you sure your estimate for Tesla is good? I thought, it would be more than 200 YTD.

    2. I agree - There must over 100 Model S in HK right now. But many were delivered in August.

  4. The Environmental Protection Department of Hong Kong says that: " At end of September 2014, there are 986 EVs in use, up from less than 100 in end 2010."

Unfortunately the website does not break down sales by manufacturer, but it does have a list of all the manufacturers selling EVs in Hong Kong (about 15) and other information about charging stations and so on.

  5. These figures seem way off. In particular, both Tesla and BMW are way higher than that. Tesla YTD september should be at least 300 cars. Merely referring to the TD figures shows way more than 74 EVs registered YTD.

Can you clarify where you get the figures from? You say HKMTA, but what URL are you seeing this from?
