The next Volvo Best Seller?

Volvo Fest in 26% PEV Share market

We start the month in Sweden, the local plug-in market is recovering its mojo, up 86% YoY, to 6.391 registrations, with June scoring a 26% share for plugins, in line with the 2020 PEV share, of 26%. Currently BEVs only represent 28% of plugin sales, with BEVs with 7% share of the total market (up 2% regarding the same period last year), and PHEVs at 19%, jumping a stark 12% in share regarding last year, as 12 months ago, they only had 7%...

Looking at the remaining fuels, HEVs increase from 7% to to 8%, regarding last year, while petrol loses 5% of the market, now at 39%, while diesel does even worse, dropping 10% in share, to just 26%.

Looking at last month Best Sellers, it's a Volvo Fest, with a 1-2 victory and 4 models in the Top 8, with the XC60 PHEV winning last month trophy, thanks to a record performance of 807 registrations, followed by the S/V60 twins, with 752 units, while the larger twins, the S/V90 PHEV, ended in #6, thanks to 297 deliveries, with the recent XC40 PHEV reaching a record 277 units, allowing it to reach #8 in June's ranking.

Elsewhere, the VW Passat GTE was #3, with 476 units, followed by the Tesla Model 3, that due to production constraints, this time had a small end-of-quarter high tide, with just 312 units, almost being caught by the #5 Renault Zoe, that had a surprising 299 units result in June.

On the 2020 ranking, there is not much to talk about regarding the podium positions, but below them, there is a lot going on, starting with the Volvo XC60 PHEV jumping two positions, to #5, becoming the new Best Selling SUV in the table, while both the Volvo S/V90 PHEV twins and the Renault Zoe also went up two positions, to #8 and #9 respectively, with the flagship Volvos becoming the new leaders in the full size category, after surpassing the Audi e-Tron.

And the good news didn't stopped here for the Swedes, with the Climber of the Month being the Volvo XC40 PHEV, shooting 8 positions, to #12, while the XC90 PHEV rejoined the table, in #19, thanks to 142 registrations, thus making 5 Volvos in the Top 20.

Oh, and let's not forget that the first units of the Polestar 2 and its platform twin Volvo XC40 EV were registered this month, so one can say that the Swedish maker is on a roll...

But the ranking changes didn't ended there, the Skoda Superb PHEV was up one position, to #13, proving once a again the local love for station wagons, highlighted by the two positions jump of the Kia Ceed PHEV, to #14, thanks to a record 177 registrations, while the Hyundai Kona EV climbed to #18, helped by the ramp up in the Hyundai Czech factory.

Outside the Top 20, we should mention the good start of the Ford Kuga PHEV, with 102 units, yet another record performance (Has Ford struck gold with its new plugin compact SUV?), while the Porsche Cayenne PHEV also scored a record result, with 83 units.

In the manufacturers ranking, Volvo is in the lead, with 23% share, up 3%, while Kia (18%, down 1%), keeps the 2nd place, while Volkswagen (12%, down 1%) closes the podium, ahead of Tesla (7%, up 1%).

Nothing new on the ranking, with the Best Sellers holding their positions and keeping the Tesla Model 3 in #4.

Looking at the remaining models, all have PHEV versions with variable share of the nameplate sales, from 100% in the Kia Optima, to 37% of the Volvo twins, the 30% of the BMW 3-Series (the SW body of the 330e PHEV is badly needed to jump start sales again), passing by the 59% of the VW Passat, so all in all, electrification is on the right track in this category.

We now have a fully electrified Top 5 in this category, now that the local Mercedes importer is selling the GLC300e in volumes, being now responsible for 19% of all GLC registrations.

This highlights the fast electrification rate that is also going on, with the Outlander (96% PHEV sales) being basically a plugin model, while the BMW X3 (58%) and Volvo XC60 (39%) are increasing fast their PHEV take rate, with the same being said about the Audi Q5 (29%).

Considering all this, it won't be surprising that soon all models on this Top 5 will have over 50% of units plugin capable.

Elsewhere, the Audi is starting to deliver the first units of the A6 PHEV, so expect a fully electrified Top 5 soon.

Finally, the  #4 Mercedes E-Class keeps its 29% PHEV take rate, so this category is having a harder time to be electrified than others.

One of the categories with best results regarding electrification, here the all-electric Audi e-Tron is the ruler of the category, ahead of the Volvo XC90, that has 57% of its sales coming from the PHEV version, which is midway between the BMW X5 (73% PHEV) and the Porsche Cayenne (88%), with this last one increasing dramatically its electrification rate in the last few months, highlighting Porsche's recent love for plugins.

Interestingly, the Mercedes GLE climbed to #3, but it wasn't thanks to its PHEV version, as the GLE350de for now only represents 2% of the model total sales.

  2. How do manufacturers product development convert into registrations on the swedish market? During the first half of 2020 (jan –jun) several new BEVs began to be delivered to swedish customers. Also, some existing BEVs were updated, a few with extended range. The list below highlights how new and updated BEVs performed on the swedish market during the first half of this year. The ranking is of course dependent on the date for first deliveries, but the list nevertheless gives an overview of new and updated BEVs during the period and their performance so far half way in the year. The numbers within parenthesis reflects the ranking in the general list of chargeable cars (PHEVs included), followed by the number of registrations Jan - Jun.

      What´s the reason you do not think the Mach-E will reach Europe during 2020?

      @antrik
      ID.5 refers to the ID.4 coupé.

      Seems there is no reason to believe that PSA would not introduce electric versions of all their cars even in the C-segment, just as they already are doing now with cars in the B-segment (Peugeot e-208, Opel Corsa-e, DS3). The first of them is already revealed, the Citroën e-C4. The new generation Opel Astra could share the same elactric platform, so it seems logical that there will also be an Astra-e. Maybe not already during 2021 though. Sorry, I can´t remember the source of information now.

      Regarding M_Byte: Agree. It´s uncertain. I did not remove it since there is still a chance that the company will survive with new owners. Let´s see what happens.

      Also, there is one new BEV missing in the list: The Sono Sion that is planned to go into production in the previous Saab-factory here in Sweden in September 2021.

    6. I had read that Ford was going to prioritize the US market in late 2020, in order to bank on the usual end-of-year sales rush.

      Besides, with the Ford Kuga PHEV selling like hot cakes in Europe, the urgency to launch the Mustang Mach-E in 2020 in order to comply with the CO2 rules isn't as big as initially expected.

  4. While totally overshadowed by the stellar PHEV result, BEVs also have seen a ~40% relative growth in market share YoY, which is in line with the global long-term trend -- so not all that bad. (Especially considering the recent Tesla shortage...)

    During the second quarter, Volvo Car cemented the market leadership although Kia-Hyundai managed to return to the second spot and is well positioned to discuss the leadership for the remainder of the year. Meanwhile, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance keeps sliding in this market.

    From the posted data, Q22020 standings are:

    1st Volvo Car with 7538 vehicles
    2nd Kia-Hyundai with 6090 vehicles
    3rd Volkswagen Group with 4931 vehicles
    4th Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance with 3435 vehicles

    1. Thanks for the list, a few highlights:

      - Audi needs to ramp up their PHEVs fast, as BMW and now Mercedes are expanding their PHEV sales across the lineup;

      - Same for Jaguar;

      - Skoda Octavia, Toyota RAV4 (if Toyota decides to make ii in large volumes) and VW Golf could be huge;

      - Volvo is now pushing hard their PHEVs, with the most surprising being the XC40, that recently had a big jump in sales.

      Delete
    2. @José

      Yes, Audi was late in joining the PHEV-race, but is now accelerating. I would not be surprised if the Audi A6/A6 Avant 55 TFSI e quattro will beat both the 530e/530e Touring and the Mercedes E 300e/de during 2021. To surpass the Volvo S90/V90 T6/T8 will be much tougher though...

      Agree about the Octavia and RAV4. Toyota RAV4, with its long range, will steal a lot of customers from the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV next year. Maybe most of them?

      I will not be surprised if VW Tiguan eHybrid will have a higher position in the ranking than VW Golf eHybrid/GTE when we summarize PHEV sales for 2021. This is a very important model for VW on the Swedish market, and also on many other markets in Europe.

      Yes, Volvo pushes strong now for its PHEVs. The company pays the cost for charging for one year for everyone that buys a Volvo PHEV until September 30. The more price friendly XC40 T4, XC60 T6 and V90 T6 which will now start to be delivered will certainly contribute to the sales increase for the Volvo PHEVs. The goal for Volvo 2020 is that 20% of it´s global sales should be PHEVs.

      A mention for the BMW 330e/330e xDrive Touring which could achieve a high ranking in the list together with it´s 330e sport sedan sibling.

      Kia could suffer on the Swedish market if not the new generation Optima will be available in Europe.

      And yes, let´s see if the Jaguar suvs will make it this year, or if the first cars will be deliveried in 2021.

      Delete
    3. Why would the Tiguan be more important than the Golf? Of all markets I'm aware of, this one seems to have the least appetite for crossovers...

      Delete
    4. Volvo offering free charging for PHEVs is interesting. I guess this might help get some people who only buy because of incentives into the habit of actually charging regularly...

      Delete
    5. Medium sized suvs, as the Tiguan, are getting more popular even in Sweden. Suvs also tend to register a larger share PHEV-versions than other types of cars. And the ID.3 will definitely steel many customers from Golf as the share of BEVs are forecasted to increase significantly in 2021. At the same time Golf has always had a strong position in Sweden. We´ll see what happens...

      Delete
    6. Tiguan is compact... And it will also have an in-house BEV competitor. (ID.4)

      Delete
    7. @antrik

      When do you think VW have ramped up it´s production so that the ID.4 can be delivered in volume to swedish customers?

      Delete
    8. I don't really know... But going by the original timeline, and the fact that reportedly they have now converted the second half of the Zwickau factory, I'd be very disappointed if it's not available in volume by Q1 2021, or Q2 at the latest.

      Delete
    9. @antrik

      We are talking about registrations in the calender year 2021. As long as the ID.4 is not being delivered in volume to swedish customers there will not be much of in-house BEV competition for the Tiguan eHybrid.

      You might be right about that the ID.4 will begin to be delivered in volume already in Q1 or Q2 2021. I have no insight into production plans at Volkswagen. But considering that the ID.4 is not yet officially revealed and that Volkswagen have to ramp up it´s production of ID.3 in three different battery sizes during Q4 2020, Q1 2021 and maybe also Q2 2021, my forecast is that the ID.4 will begin to be delivered in volume to swedish customers in Q4 2021 or maybe already in the end of Q3.

      Anyway, it will be interesting to follow the pace of new ID-car launches at Volkswagen.

      Delete
    10. The ID.4 was originally meant to start deliveries in 2020. A full year delay is very unlikely, considering that this would be even more than the ~1/2 year ID.3 delay.

      There will certainly be some BEV-wagons in about 2-3 years time. Volvo will launch it´s new generation V90 in 2023 and there will be a BEV version of the big Volvo wagon, just like it will for each new Volvo model from now on. In 2025/2026 there will also be a Volvo V60 BEV. Furthermore Volkswagen is now working on their ID. Space Vizzion which is scheduled for launch in 2022.

      Swedish customers will have to have some patience, also wagon BEVs are coming...
