Netherlands July 2016

The new darling of Dutch fleet buyers?

Volvo XC90 T8 Back At #1 in depressed market

The sales hangover is raging on, with sales (774) down 65% YoY, and it should keep on like this, with the Dutch plug-in market losing importance within the EV World, if last year it was Second in share and #3 in volume, by now it is only #5 in market share and #10 in volume.

To worsen things further, there is a significant number of used plug-ins being re-exported to others markets, namely Ampera's, Leaf's and the I-Miev triplets...

Nevertheless, the EV Share recovered slightly to 2.38%, still far, far from the 9.6% of last year.

Looking at the monthly ranking, in a 100% PHEV Top 5, the Monthly Best Seller award went for the first time this year to the Mercedes C350e, with 128 deliveries (Year best), followed by the Volvo XC90 PHEV and BMW 330e.

The Audi Q7 e-Tron jumped straight to #5 in its first full sales month, which might indicate that the German barge SUV is headed for success here.

In the YTD ranking, there were a number of significant changes, the most important of all being the recovery of the YTD Best Seller Throne by the Volvo XC90 T8, but with only 26 units separating ot from the Volvo XC90 T8, the dispute for #1 is far from over.

As the Dutch EV market returns to its PHEV roots, the few all-electric models in top positions are dropping, the Nissan Leaf was down one position to Fourth, surpassed by the VW Passat GTE, while the #9 Renault Zoe was also down to #10 and the VW e-Golf dropped from #10 to #12. Right now there are only 3 BEV's in the Top 10.

In an atypical year due to more stringent fiscal incentives, there are models that still excel in the general auto market: The Volvo XC90 T8 represents 85% of the total sales of that model and if considered individually, it would lead the Luxury SUV class, another impressive stat from Volvo is that 16% of all its sales in this market had a plug, Not bad, eh?

Speaking of plug-ins leading in the general ranking, the Tesla Model S (915 units) is leading its class, ahead of the BMW 5-Series (832), Audi A6 (561) and Mercedes E-Class (445).

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, BMW's strong line up has has helped it to maintain the leadership (22%), with Volvo (19%) in Second and Tesla in Third, with 17% share.

If we add regular hybrids to Plug-ins, the regular hybrids have recovered ground, with the Toyota Best-Sellers recovering the Top Two positions and a new model arriving to make an impact, the Kia Niro dedicated hybrid is already among the Best Sellers, with trendy faux-SUV style and interesting stats, this is a model that could hurt Toyota's long leading record in this class.

Now all that Kia needs to do is to include a plug in it...Better yet, remove the ICE bits, apply a 60kWh battery and the Korean automaker will have a winner in its hands.

Despite this HEV resurgence, plug-in hybrids are also represented, with the Mercedes C350e reaching Third and the Volvo XC90 PHEV #5.
