World Top 10 July 2016 (Updated)

BYD Qin: "I'm baaack..."

Models - Tesla Model S #1 in July, Nissan Leaf (still) Leader YTD

The global EV market continues to grow at rapid pace, with some 63.000 units delivered in July, representing a 63% growth YoY, with YTD sales up 53%, we are headed for a total sales number this year between 800.000 units to one Million EV's.

In the models ranking, the Best Seller of the Month was the Tesla Model S, thanks to a best ever First-Month-of-the-Quarter result (3.728 units), achieving also for the first time the Best Seller status in this phase.

Looking at the YTD ranking, the Chevrolet Volt managed to surpass the Renault Zoe and is now in #5, but the #7 BYD Qin is unrelentlessly in the ranking, so the GM will have to watch its back in the future, if it wants to keep its position.

There is a new face in the ranking, the SAIC Roewe e550 PHEV sedan is the new #10, making it the fourth Chinese Vehicle in the ranking, more than the USA and Japan (Both have two), or Germany and France (One each).

There has been several questions on why did the Nissan Leaf had a sudden bump in YTD sales from June to July, in order to answer them, i should inform that from one month to the other, besides some minor changes in the UK numbers, there is a new market being counted here, Sri Lanka.

The Nissan Leaf is responsible for some 90% of sales of EV's in that country, meaning some additional 100 units per month in the Nissan Leaf YTD tally, that didn't existed before July reports.

Manufacturers -  The Fall & Fall of Mitsubishi

BYD continues to be the Master In Command, in July it delivered another impressive result, with 10.226 units (The second best performance ever), while Nissan and Tesla are running for the Second Place.

Below the podium, BMW is firm in the Fourth position, while Mitsubishi is losing positions every passing month, it is now #6, when in February it was three positions above. With BAIC and Chevrolet selling at a higher level, it won't be surprising to see the Japanese automaker end the year at #9...

Looking below the #10 Ford, JAC remains close (10.753 units), but the real threat is SAIC Roewe, #11 with 12.118 units, having scored 2.887 units last month, thus putting pressure at the American brand for the next few months in the race for the last place in the ranking.

  1. You write in June that Tesla passed Nissan and took the second place and now even if tesla sold more Nissan have the second place, where cup have it been a mistake?

Do you think that Tesla Model S are able to take the first place this year to or will Nissan Leaf keep the first place? Are Tesla Model X able to get up to top 10 or is it to far behind even if the production is ramping up?

    1. Please see the new text (In Blue) regarding the addition of Sri Lanka to the YTD numbers.

As for the questions regarding Tesla:

      - The MS has a real shot at #1, basically it will depend on Nissan ability to put the upcoming 40 kWh Leaf up and running in significant numbers before December, if they do, they will be able to tackle the MS December attack, if not, it will be the same story as last year, with Tesla winning the final sprint.

      - The MX is 3.000 units behind the #10 e550, with Tesla steadily streamlining their SUV model production, i believe it will reach #10 until December, the only obstacle might be the Rise and Rise of other Chinese Models, rushing into the Top 10.

    2. Let's not forget that Tesla sold 50,446 Model S in 2015 vs 43,651 Nissan Leaf.

  2. Sorry José, but I'm lost with your figures to the Leaf and the Model S. In June, you gave 4150 more Leafs to a total of 27851, and 5401 more Model S to a total of 22181. Now, you have 3243 more Leafs in July with a total of 32377 , and 3728 more Model S with a total of 25627.
How did you get from 27851 to 32377 with only 3243 more Leafs, and how did you get from 22181 to only 25671 with 3728 more Model S in July?

  4. Your TEsla combined number for July seems low. insideevs has 2150 MS and 750 MX for the US alone. They said something like 5150 cars "in transit" at end of Q2, so it seems that Europe and other parts would add up to a larger total.
